And he’s got the bullet scars to prove it. The Alaska native who came of age in Shreveport, Louisiana, sings his confessional, soul-baring songs with deep conviction. Smalley expresses a fresh take on Country music that knows tradition, inspired by the greats of the genre and infused with the swampy sounds of his roots, the Gospel of hardwood church pews and the impassioned delivery of R&B. Artists like Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, Al Green and Willie Nelson provided a musical roadmap for Smalley to follow, and the against-the-grain success of Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson drew him to Nashville. There, he began working with producer Keith Stegall, known for his award-winning work with the likes of Alan Jackson and Zac Brown Band. S6: E2: Jesse Roach - Strings of the Soul
Date: January 17, 2024Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioEpisode title and number: S6: E2: Jesse Roach - Strings of the SoulI had the pleasure of sitting down with the fiercely talented Jesse Roach, a singer-songwriter whose Texas roots and vibrant energy captivate from the first chord. As we shared stories, she brought the studio to life with "Girls from the South," a track that packs a punch with its bold Southern charm. Our conversation was a journey in itself, tracing the lines of Jesse's transformation from a young rebel to a seasoned artist, and diving into the heart of her songwriting struggles and ambitions. Her honesty about the creative process and the daunting task of living up to songwriting legends will resonate with anyone who's ever faced a blank page and a racing mind.  It's a wonder how the world of a 'military brat' can shape the soul of a musician. Jesse and I explored the nomadic lifestyle's impact on her youth and the tight radius of local gigs that mark the territory of her musical growth. From Huntsville's intimate venues to the grand stage of American Idol, we peeled back the curtain to reveal the less-than-glittery truths of talent shows. My own tale weaves into this tapestry, recounting the Cypress days and the crossroads of choosing between passion or a more trodden path. Jesse's story is a poignant reminder that while the guitar may intimidate, a voice with conviction can soar above the strings.  The episode wraps with the stirring narrative of "Angel Wings," a song that pays homage to a beloved local figure whose spirit lingers in the Cypress bar scene. Our discussion of this melancholic masterpiece opens up a wider conversation on the profound impact such music can have. It turns out, that sometimes a somber tune can be a comfort, an echo of shared human experience. Jesse Roach's stories, insights, and acoustic serenade offer a rare glimpse into the soul of a true artist, and this episode is an invitation to feel the full spectrum of emotions that only music can deliver.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMWWW.SIGNAD.COMWWW.RUNWAYAUDIO.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist(s) Web PageInstagram - @jesseroachtexas_musicCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. S5: E4 - Paul Noyola - East Texas Pickin and Patroling
Date: August 23, 2023Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioEpisode title and number:  S5: E4 - Paul Noyola  - East Texas Pickin and PatrolingBIO:Around 13 years old, I taught myself to play guitar - singing my favorite tunes comforted me during a tumultuous time in my life. Within a year, I began writing songs and performing at events around East Texas. In 1995, I was 15 and was hired by a local country club to perform for 4 hours every Friday night for several years. I also formed & fronted The Tailor Made Band beginning in 1995, touring regionally, playing old country, western swing tunes, and several songs that I had written. During those early teenage years, I headlined local festivals & performed at events with Leann Rimes, Mark Chesnutt, Wayne Toups, and Johnny Gimble, and was mentored in songwriting by Grammy Award winner Don Rollins. When I turned 20, I felt the need to get into a career and became a police officer, which I devoted all my attention to for about 5 years until I had the urge to perform music again. The freedom and power of rock music were a big influence on me from an early age - with some of my favorites being the Beatles, Led Zepplin, and 90's grunge. I had always wanted to do a rock project, so in 2005 I fronted a 4 piece rock band called Demagogue and for the next two years, we wrote and performed our music around Texas and Louisiana, releasing the EP Passage To Repute and album Fight The Fate. The bassist for the band was Matt Sebastian, who is currently performing around the Houston area. The drummer for Demagogue is now a well-known session drummer and studio owner in the Nashville area, Grady Saxman with Saxman Studios.A few years later, I fronted another rock project called Noyola and during its 3-year run, we released the album Sow Tomorrow and regionally toured the Texas and Louisiana area. After the band Noyola dissolved around 2012, I got busy with life - working on my businesses, traveling, and getting married. In 2022, I got back to recording and writing, with the release of a new single called Holding On To Hope in March 2023 and Claim To Be in June 2023. The music I create now has mellowed and matured a bit - all of the genres that I love and have performed over the years have melded together to style the new songs I'm writing and performing - but I do still love performing some of the rock songs I wrote years ago.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMWWW.SIGNAD.COMWWW.RUNWAYAUDIO.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist(s) Social Media:http://www.paulnoyola.comCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. Their songs are regularly featured on Sirius XM Radio and receive millions of plays on online streaming services like Spotify and YouTube.Founded by Stoney out of the blues club circuit in 1994, the Band has gone through several interactions over the years. They have been signed to Shrapnel Records since 2004 and have found ever-increasing success since that time. Having previously settled in Los Angeles, the band now makes its home nestled in the Las Vegas music scene.Past members have included drummer Charlie Glover, bassist Colby Smith, bassist Roger Tausz, singer Eric Mitchell, and singer Kyle Frost.Their current line-up was brought together in the early 2010’s.Stoney met Barry Barnes at a Sand Dollar Blues Club jam in 2010, and when scheduling conflicts left Stoney without a bassist, he called upon Barry to join him for a US tour. Keeping up with everything Stoney could throw at him, Barry has lent power to the group’s sound with his skill and killer feel as the bass backbone of blues.Stoney first saw Shon McKee playing while attending a performance for South of Graceland in 2012 at the behest of the group’s manager. Immediately impressed by Shon’s world-class drumming, they met face to face a week later and bonded over a mutual love of KISS. The Power Trio of the Stoney Curtis Band was now finally forged atop Shon’s rock-solid drumming. The three have enjoyed sharing success after success, fueled by a friendship born out of love for each’s others compatible musical spirits and incredible talent.
