Our Editor's Take

On the Struggle Care podcast, host KC Davis helps listeners learn how to be kind to themselves. KC is a counselor, speaker, and bestselling author of How to Keep House While Drowning. She provides practical advice to anyone struggling with mental health or physical illness. On her podcast, she is open and honest about her personal therapy journey. As a teenager, she received treatment for addiction and poor mental health.

The podcast host felt frustrated by the self-care advice she received. This "one size fits all" guidance gave her more tasks requiring time and energy. KC knows that simple care tasks can be challenging for anyone with mental health issues. They include anything from cleaning to brushing one's teeth. People may feel expected to finish these routine chores to avoid feelings of failure.

KC decided to divert her attention to helping others approach these simple tasks. This follows the principle from her TED Talk that "good enough is perfect." On Struggle Care, she shares her experiences and talks to listeners. She also invites professionals to share their expertise.

KC's former therapy advisor, Heidi Smith, joins the podcast to discuss her self-improvement routine. Heidi talks about why washing her hair is overwhelming and the pressure on women to be presentable. Getting her hair cleaned and set twice weekly helps her cope with life's challenges. Heidi's self-help routine removes functional barriers, so she feels more in control.

In another podcast episode, author Virginia Sole-Smith discusses body size in relation to parenting. How can parents encourage their kids to have a positive relationship with food? Why is this so important? It's an interesting discussion that explores how a parent approaches nutrition. Virginia and KC also discuss the damaging presentation of body image in the media on the podcast.

The Struggle Care podcast is a fresh alternative to classic self-help guides. It focuses on empowering people to customize their home care routines to work for them. The series is a safe space for people to share and ask for help. New episodes premiere Mondays.
