Our Editor's Take

The Russian Rulers History Podcast reflects Mark Schauss' affection for Russian history. Schauss, a global lecturer in environmental and nutritional health, is of Russian heritage. That spurred his interest in becoming an expert on the country's past. Schauss has been doing the podcast since 2010. Once he got through Russian rulers up to the present day, he widened his focus to all facets of the history of Russia.

Schauss devotes several episodes to Peter I, better known today as Peter the Great. Peter became tsar in 1682 and emperor in 1721. He remained emperor until his death in 1725. Schauss covers Peter's wars and his moving of the capital from Moscow to St. Petersburg. He devotes one episode to the All-Joking, All-Drunken Synod of Fools and Jesters." Peter started the club when he was 18 years old. He continued the club until his death. Much of the club's activities involved his drunken revelry with friends. The club faced controversy early on when it angered the Russian Orthodox Church.

Schauss also devotes several episodes to Catherine II (Catherine the Great). One episode deals with the Pugachev Rebellion. Schauss calls this "the greatest peasant rebellion in Russian history." Another episode deals with Grigory Potemkin, one of Catherine's lovers. Schauss calls him "the love of her life."

There are several episodes dealing with the Bolsheviks and the Russian Revolution. One episode is "Nicholas II - Who Could Have Done It Better?" Schauss determines if any of seven earlier Russian rulers might have saved the Romanovs. There are also episodes dealing with the end of the USSR.

Schauss devotes several episodes to the history of Russia and Ukraine. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Schauss had a special episode. He said that his views might make him no longer welcome in Russia. Otherwise, the Russian Rulers History Podcast continues to be historical in nature.
