Nobody's worried about yesterday, or freaked out about tomorrow. We need to morph and grow, and we need to do better and be better. When asked to give advice to young girls, Dotsie said to trust yourself, trust your body, trust your decisions, and be you. 24 - Katri Koehle talks about camaraderie, competition, and career in midlife rec tennis
Katri is an avid club player and certified tennis junkie. Katri lives by the mantra of, “Do whatever it takes to keep tennis fun. Sometimes it is playing more, sometimes it is buying a new tennis skirt.” Sportsmanship and fair play are of utmost importance, and promotion of the game of tennis is paramount. Katri is a native Texan, living in the mountains of Utah. Katri's Notes from the Sidelines:Tennis gives people a reason to come up and talk to you -- it's an invitation.Tennis is an opportunity to work through challenges in your personal life. There is such a thing as positive drama in tennis, and it looks like intensity in competition.Tennis can be healing for someone who has heartache or emotional distress in their life; they can use tennis as an outlet to make friends, feel better, get exercise, or even get sunshine.Katri lives by the mantra, "You do whatever it takes to keep tennis fun." There are so many options  with tennis, from drills at the club, hitting balls on the local courts, going on tennis vacations, to playing competitive leagues. Do what makes you happy to keep tennis in your life always. When Katri sat with the thought of, "What's the worst thing that could happen," she realized losing was the worst thing, and then her anxiety surfaced and she could conquer it and move forward with joy.Use your words to stick up for yourself. There is something about being creative that is healing.Try to have a good sense of humor and don't take yourself too seriously.Follow Katri on Tennis YellowCheck out her sister-in-law's successful real estate businessWant to go to Laver Cup?Check out https://www.jentlecoaching.com for more information about Jentle Coaching. And be sure to follow @jentlecoaching on Instagram to stay up-to-date on all the latest news/offers.Join the Sideline Sisters Facebook Group and be a part of our growing community.Book a DISCOVERY CALL with Jenny from Jentle Coaching to get information about coaching and breathwork services.Download Jenny's FREE MEDITATION Sign up for Podcast like a Mother: Podcast Creation Course**The information provided on this podcast does not, and is not intended to constitute legal advice; instead, all information, content, and materials available on this site are for general informational purposes only. 23 - Elizabeth Emery talks about the tangled web of issues in women's sports
Elizabeth Emery is a former pro cyclist and host of Hear Her Sports podcast. For almost 8 years, she's interviewed female athletes and women in sports about breaking barriers, speaking up, and living with power and confidence in today's changing world. Her Notes from the Sidelines:It's a tangled web of issues in women's sports.Until women get in positions of power at athletic companies, the gear won't be designed and made to properly fit and honor women's bodies and needs.Lessons she's learned from her guests:There's power in sports: being good at something, having skills and strength. This translates outside of sports to the workplace, in relationships, the way you walk in the world. Most people have someone telling them they can do it. We should all be doing this for each other.Female athletes understand their place in history, that women came before who fought for their place, so they could be where they are. They spend time promoting other women because the fight is not over.In order to get more women's sports on air, when women's sports are available to watch , we must tune in. Women need to serve on boards and be CEOs. Let's buy merch! Sports is a mirror for what's happening in the real world; it lets us talk about issues, like equity.Involvement in physical activity is an opportunity to learn about ourselves: our feelings about competition, beating someone, losing, being overpowered, and when the competitor is younger. It's less about being a gracious winner and more about how you be a good competitor without being a jerk and about being a good teammate.BREATHWORK GIFTHear Her Sports PodcastJesse Diggins' episodeElizabeth's websiteChristine Yu's book Up to Speed - the one about the sports bras and bike seatsCaitlin Clark merchCheck out https://www.jentlecoaching.com for more information about Jentle Coaching. 22 - Alison Gorrell talks about the stigma attached to sports psychology
Alison Gorrell grew up in Colorado playing tennis and basketball and went on to play Division I basketball in college. After graduating, while pursuing an advanced degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology, she played professional basketball overseas. Through her career, she learned how important the mental side of the game was to the overall success of a player. The psychology of athletes became a huge passion of hers, leading her to start her own coaching business.Alison's Notes from the Sidelines:There's a stigma to be strong in athletics and have your mind right, but athletes actually need to be taught the skills, tools, and techniques for success.Alison believes what makes a great basketball game is ball movement, action, team play, and competitiveness; a game where everyone is showing up ready to go and all players are looking to win a championship together is best, versus a game where players are looking to collect individual records. What's special about sports is being able to learn about athletes as individuals beyond the sport they play. We have a greater attachment as fans when we realize there is more to them than their athletic capabilities.Athletes are people, not just entertainers. They deal with all the same normal human emotions as everyone else, especially confidence.BREATHWORK GIFTAlison's websiteAlison's InstagramContact Alison by email at coachgorrell@gmail.comCheck out https://www.jentlecoaching.com for more information about Jentle Coaching. 21 - Mint Miller talks about the mental lessons of golf and applying them in the "real world"
Mint Miller is the creator and host of the BetterMint podcast. Mint’s podcast is meant to help others by letting her experience be their survival guide because in her stories and healing, she believes others will recognize their own. As a divorced, single mom of two young girls, Mint has felt stuck in her career for the past 20 years that triggers her anxiety. Compounded with the stress of divorce, the combination has caused that anxiety to become debilitating. It wasn’t until doing recent trauma healing work that she realized much of her anxiety is a trauma response to past experiences from childhood. She finally used what she learned in her healing journey and began to set limits and boundaries that changed the narrative of her life and allowed her to step into who she really is and the person she knows she was meant to be. Mint feels that her practice of setting limits and boundaries has made such a profound impact on her life that she wants others to learn this practice and experience the same positivity and balance in theirs. She works with successful “go-to” women by coaching them through her “3 Yes Boundary Method” to help them identify what they value most, so they can say YES to what’s most important to them and have the confidence to say no to what isn’t. This approach also helps women understand their values and their worthiness. During her healing journey, Mint also opened up to the spiritual medium gifts she discovered she had as a very young child, and does Angel Card Readings for others in person (if local) or via Zoom.Mint's Note's from the Sidelines:Golf is a true test of mental stability.Mental strength can trump actual talent any day. It's easy to get in your head but even easier to let someone else get in your head.So many benefits of mindfulness practice, but the most integral one for Mint was a mantra to tune out the noise, "In with the good, out with the bad." It helped her regain focus and stay positive. The benefits of being involved in sports translate to the corporate world: focus, take criticism, work in groups/teamworkBetterMint podcastBetterMint facebook groupBetterMint on InstagramA MOMENT FOR MOTHERS event -- Saturday, May 11, 1pm EST -- CLICK TO REGISTER -- tell your friends and neighbors -- learn breatCheck out https://www.jentlecoaching.com for more information about Jentle Coaching. 20 - Laarni Mulvey talks about being big and strong in mid-life
Laarni Mulvey is a speaker of strength and an author who is also known as the "Power Lady." She is a 47-year old athlete who inspires others to believe in their own strength. She believes strength can positively impact others, that strength allows people to outperform and outgrow the standards set upon them. She shares her strength and leads people to embrace their own strength, to not be afraid of it, because it's never too late to get BIG. Laarni's Notes from the Sidelines:Being an athlete has given Laarni confidence to tell the story of her Filipina childhood, inspire others, be assertive about things she wants to do, and speak on platforms. It has opened doors for her.She was willing to take the time to find the right exercise for her. "I feel like when I hit 40, there was a different level of life that I wanted to accomplish, and that is where the strength sports came in."Being afraid to hurt herself doesn't stop her from trying.Laarni wants to share her strength and let people know that they can embrace their athleticism and it's not just physical, it's also the athleticism of their brain. The idea of being big and strong is okay.Strength is universal; it's everywhere. It starts within yourself. You are strong enough. Standing strong is really important.Don't be afraid to outperform and outgrow the standards that were set upon you by your parents when you were young. We should be setting our own wisdom and be understanding and trusting of our own wisdom for ourselves. There are goals, but there's also enjoying the process and allowing the unfolding, because there are going to be good days and bad days. The question is how am I going to react to the successes and failures, because failure is another page in the lesson book.To quote Laarni's friend, "We only have one life. We're here for a  good time, not for a long time."Laarni on InstagramGrab Laarni's book on AmazonLaarni's websiteGET THE BREATHWORK GIFT HERECheck out https://www.jentlecoaching.com for more information about Jentle Coaching. 19 - Jamie Mittelman talks about changing the male domination of sports media coverage
Jamie has a background in media, having managed a $30 Million media portfolio on behalf of the conglomerate of Yahoo, The Huffington Post, AoL, and Verizon. Her passion for sport, diversity and inclusion inspired her to found Flame Bearers while receiving her Masters in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School where she received an award for her significant impact on the Harvard community. Jamie's work with Flame Bearers has reach in 48 countries and recently received 4 Signal Awards in the categories of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Public Service & Activism. Prior to Harvard, Jamie received her MBA from Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business. Flame Bearers is the first global storytelling platform celebrating the stories of women Olympians and Paralympians. From household names to unsung heroes around the world, each featured story highlights the successes, struggles and social issues that drive the world's most prestigious athletes. Flame Bearers brings these champions' stories to life via podcast, video, and live events. Jamie's Notes from the Sidelines:Historically 96% of televised prime time  sports media coverage has gone to men. A new statistic shows women are getting up to 15% of the coverage. This shows improvement, but not the equity Jamie is working towards. There will be parity at the 2024 games in terms of the number of male + female Olympians, for the first time in history. The last games was the first to televise the Paralympics.Three lessons Jamie has learned from interviewing Olympians and Paralympians:Hearing no or experiencing loss is an opportunity to learn and grow versus simply shutting down.No winner gets to the podium alone; they all have a tribe behind them.Resilience means something different to each athlete, but they all know bumps are inevitable, just a temporary setback. It's what you do afterwards that makes all the difference.Check out the Leylah Fernandez ad that we talked aboutJamie's podcastFlamebearer's InstagramFlamebearers websitecollaborate with Flamebearersjamie@flamebearers.comCheck out https://www.jentlecoaching.com for more information about Jentle Coaching. 18 - Dr. Liz Nobis talks about building the mindfulness muscle one rep at a time
Dr. Liz Nobis earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Biola University's Rosemead School of Psychology in 2021 and served as a postdoctoral fellow at Penn's Counseling Services before beginning with athletics. Prior to earning her doctorate, Dr. Liz spent several years within the public health and non-profit fields conducting research, statistical analysis, and educational programming in the Philadelphia area. Originally hailing from Oregon, Dr. Liz earned a master's in public health from Drexel in 2012 following her bachelor's degree in general science from the University of Oregon. She is an avid runner, basketball fan, and lover of all Philly sports, and enjoys the nerdier things in life such as reddit, data analytics, and board games.Dr. Liz's Notes from the Sidelines:"For so many people, being is a really painful place to be." Technology makes it harder for this current generation to be in the moment, still and quiet, with their thoughts, without distraction. Therefore, the mindfulness muscle must be built.Just hearing a notification on your phone can take your concentration from an in-depth state to a place where you need 17-22 minutes to return to that original point of deep concentration.Because of technology, there haven't been as many opportunities for low-risk interactions that could feel like conflict for today's generation. So much communication happens over text and Snapchat and other apps that they aren't getting the immediate feedback of how their words impact other people, which helps develop empathy. The number 1 competitor of streaming services is SLEEP, because they want more of your attention.Tip for student athletes: check in with how you are doing. Dr. Liz's suggestions for quick ways to get relief if you need a break;hot shower, coloring, writing, listening to music, call a friend from homesomething that feels goodnot to accomplish a taskanything just to relieve pressureNote to UPENN students and families: Dr. Liz mentioned pre-recording a bunch of mental health resources specific to the University. 16 - Shawnee Harle talks about FOPO and how to fight the inner critic
Shawnee Harle is a mental toughness coach who helps athletes make sense of what's going on in their head, cut through the noise, and unleash their inner tiger. She helps them figure out what to do with how they feel so they show up with courage and confidence when it matters most. And because it takes a village, Shawnee also works with their parents. She trains coaches, leaders, managers, teachers, employees, students, and young adults to strike the match and ignite the leader within. She has 27 years of elite coaching and leadership experience, she is a  2X Olympian as the former Assistant Coach for Team Canada Basketball, she has a Masters Degree in Coaching Studies, she is a Chartered Professional Coach (ChPC) with Coaching Association of Canada, and she is a Master Coach Developer and Master Learning Facilitator with National Coaching Certification Program.Shawnee's Notes from the Sidelines:Athletics and fandom are a melting pot.Competition allows us to show up for an opponent, but more importantly, for ourselves.Negative narratives get created from fear - fear of people's opinions (FOPO). Her 3-step process to managing FOPO is:have an opinion about the opinion.pull the rope back.how would you play if you didn't care?"When you worry too much what others think, you will always be their prisoner." In response to that, she suggests adding some F-You sauce. The opposite of judgement is forgiveness. Forgiveness is the missing piece to bouncing back in sport.www.shawneeharle.com@shawneeharleCheck out https://www.jentlecoaching.com for more information about Jentle Coaching. 15 - Amanda Smith talks about gender stereotypes in women's sports
GET THE FREE MEDITATION HERE!!!Amanda Smith is a former NCAA D1/D2 athlete and former mechanical/aerospace engineer who worked on several NASA projects and is now a medical intuitive. Amanda works with female athletes who have gut pain that is taking them out of their sport. Along with the unpredictable pain, they struggle with depression and their grades are slipping. Amanda can scan their bodies to see what’s wrong, clarify it for them, map the path forward, and land them back in their best condition, back in their happy life, back in the game.Amanda's Notes from the Sidelines:You, the athlete, know what the problem is, but you often don't know the why. The why is the missing puzzle piece and the gut is the place to look and find the answers to so many health problems.Athletes have to respond quickly in situations when it comes to calming down. They don't have the luxury of pressing a pause button in the middle of a game, which is why learning mindfulness and breathing techniques is essential.Every athlete will have a difficult conversation with a coach at some point in their career, and ideally you want that to happen before college, so that you have some guidance in that conversation. Amanda is the perfect person to help with that guidance. The balance between masculine and feminine for female athletes is real. The very act of using the body in an athletic way is seen as masculine because of strength, power, speed, and precision, regardless of the grace, poise, and flow of some of the so-called feminine sports.Despite the above point, it's amazing that we live in a time where a strong woman is considered sexy.Amanda on InstagramAmanda's websiteAmanda's podcastCheck out Jennie FinchDon't forget about Lisa FernandezDON'T FORGET TO GRAB THE FREE MEDITATION!!! 14 - Angela Fuller talks about what it means to be a winner and a warrior
Angela Fuller is a mother, a dedicated fitness instructor, a competitive gymnast, an inspirational speaker, and even an American Ninja Warrior, as featured on NBC's latest season of ANW this summer. Angela's journey is a testament to her resilience, having overcome a broken back and battled through postpartum depression by choosing faith over fear. Today, at the age of 43, she defies expectations, flipping and soaring through the air. Angela's true passion lies in motivating mothers to rediscover their love for movement and self-care after having children, emphasizing that self-care is indeed self-love, an essential part of nurturing both yourself and your kids. Her mission is to inspire mothers, demonstrating that it's never too late to pursue your dreams.Angela's Note's from the Sidelines:"Winning is different for everyone. I won just being there.  I held my towel with pride."Showing up and giving it your all is winning.Going out, giving it your all, having fun, and being proud of yourself are the messages we need to promote and repeat. You can't always choose the outcome, but you can choose your attitude.Angela recommends returning to your childhood sport as an adult. Her experience is that she does not need the validation she sought as a child. She is having much more fun and showing herself grace and gratitude for what her body can do.The number one lesson she is teaching her children as they participate in competitive sports is sportsmanship and to treat other athletes with kindness and dignity. Her hope is that youth sports begins to put more of a focus on sportsmanship and less on the podium and trophies. "The child that has severe anxiety shows up to that game and gives it all they can and didn't even want to go there. They won, too. And let's celebrate them."She is trying to create a movement that tells women there is no expiration date on their dreams. Her best advice to midlife women is:Dream crazy big dreams and don't let mom guilt get in the way. It's never too late.Never give up once you do decide to chase the dream. You can't win without failing. Angela on ANW!Angela on InstagramCheck out https://www.jentlecoaching.com for more information about Jentle Coaching. She's an Eagles fan by marriage, a mother of four, and the author of Mental Health Uncensored: 10 Foundations Every Parent Needs to Know and Mental Health Uncensored Teen Workbook: 10 Foundations Every Teen Needs to Know.Keri's Notes from the Sidelines:If you don't have foundations, you are never going to have great mental health. It's great to fill other people's buckets, but it is essential to find self-value from within. "If you fill your own bucket, no one can dump it out."Helicopter parents are too involved and don't give kids a chance to build themselves up.The solution for kids to build their self esteem up is for parents to stop keeping up with the Joneses and start saying NO to their children, put limits in place, which will allow the family to start having fun and enjoying life together as that family unit, which is really important.Reminder - social media isn't real.Lesson from covid - boredom is important. Boredom helps people, especially children and teens, figure out what they like and who they are as people, because being an athlete cannot be someone's entire identity.Meditation is anything that allows you to be in the moment.www.KeriCooperholistictherapy.com@kericooperholistictherapyCheck out https://www.jentlecoaching.com for more information about Jentle Coaching. Maybe your plan is not the way you originally envisioned it, and that's ok.Always be prepared. Opportunities are constantly being presented; you don't want to miss them.Every time we turn on the news, there's negativity. But there is so much beauty in the world. Not everyone can go to medical school, become a doctor, and save lives, and that is why everyone can do kind things for each other and make that difference in the world.Stephen A. 11 - Kirsten Jones talks about the best Nike ad ever made
Kirsten played Division I volleyball in college and worked for over fourteen years at NIKE. She is currently a motivational speaker, writer and Peak Performance Coach who works with both teen and pro athletes, entrepreneurs, and business leaders. She is one of the hosts of the #RaisingAthletes Podcast. Her book, Raising Empowered Athletes, is now available everywhere.Kirsten and her husband, Evan, are currently raising three teenage/young adult athletes in Los Angeles. She guest writes about the challenges of raising not only strong athletes but extraordinary people as a guest expert on websites including GrownandFlown.com and ILOVETOWATCHYOUPLAY.com.Kirsten's Notes from the Sidelines:The message kids get when parents get involved and bribe, manipulate, and micromanage their athletic career is that they're not enough being who they are and that they need their parents to take care of things for them. It robs them of a sense of self, sense of agency, and a feeling of doing it on their own. It's making love conditional, telling kids, "I'll love you when you win."70% of youth are dropping out of sports by age 13 because it's not fun, due to the professionalization of youth sports.Sitting around watching videos leads to depression."When we give back, we are our best selves," so go volunteer. Friends, fun, and fundamentals are key elements to youth athletics. Parents need to leave out the 4th F... FOMO. Access is the goal in this pay-to-play world.Life is all about being a beginner. We need to fail more and learn to get up.The only 6 words kids need to hear from parents are, "I LOVE TO WATCH YOU PLAY."Other nuggets I did not mention on the air were:The book: Where You Go is Not Who You'll Be -  Kirsten referenced this book and the idea that your destiny is based on how curious you're willing to beDone is better than perfectModel failure for your kidsTo be a peak performer, you have to have a certain level of narcissism (Kobe Bryant)Competence builds confidenceMindset + capability + tools = magic (in reference to all the greatest athletes)If you really want anything... 10 - Elizabeth Jude talks about dying at the happiest place on earth
Elizabeth mom, wife, runner, and avid sports fan, especially when it comes to the Fighting Irish. We met on the local moms Facebook page for our town, and had a lively conversation about the Olympics, running, golf, Netflix shows, Riley Leonard, and so much more.Note: if anyone has an extra ticket to the Masters Golf tournament, Elizabeth's husband, Chris, would appreciate the invitation, and would happily supply the beverages.Links to all the fun stuff:Riley Leonard's fantastic "suck" storyNetflix's Full SwingHappy GilmoreNotes from the Sidelines:Riley Leonard's mother kept his ego in check by telling him, "You suck," before each game. It was important to him that he not get consumed by the constant praise coming from outside sources and that he be driven by internal motivation.Elizabeth's family believes in supporting each other's athletic endeavors, so they show up and cheer for one another, whether it's races, gymnastics meets, or basketball games. Their philosophy is, "I watch you and cheer for you, so you do the same for me."It is important to choose a college with the right sports vibe, because each school is different and you want to make sure it's the proper fit for you.Jentle Coaching supports sports moms who feel stressed, overwhelmed, and pulled in too many directions. 8 - Brooke Bentley talks gender bias, toxic culture, and role models inside the NFL
Brooke Bentley is a former television anchor and award-winning sports reporter. After graduating with a master's in journalism from the University of Southern California, she spent two years working for the Houston Texans as a media personality and over a decade working in sports journalism. Brooke now devotes her time to championing local nonprofits, including Homemade Hope, where she served as the development director. She and her husband live in Houston and are raising two young boys.Sideline Confidential is Brooke's debut novel, where she shares her firsthand knowledge of the challenges women professionals face int he male-dominated world of professional sports.Brooke's Notes from the Sidelines:Knowledge is power, whether it's knowing people, the game, or an industry.Sports is being a part of a team and working toward a common goal. Sports brings together people from all walks of life so that you are cheering for a common team. The fact is men don't have to navigate the same issues as women in the sometimes toxic culture of the NFL. Brooke's book, Sideline Confidential, while fiction, highlights how it is harder for women to work in these situations where people could comment on their appearance and they don't know if standing up for themselves will cost them their job.We have amazing women to admire in sports journalism, such as Hannah Storm, Andrea Kraemer, Doris Burke, and Chris Evert.Follow Brooke BentleyGet Sideline Confidential here on AmazonOr here on Barnes & NobleOr here on TargetOr here on Brooke's siteCheck out Andrea Kraemer's amazing bioBrooke mentioned John McClain (not to be confused with Bruce Willis's Die Hard character)And, yes, her uncle is Dierks Bentley, the country music superstar! 7 - Laura Fox talks Kyrgios and Kardashians
Laura Fox is a content creator, influencer, and recreational tennis player from Charlotte, North Carolina. Laura's Notes from the Sidelines:Laura's content is relatable because, while she is usually quiet and respectful in real life, in her videos she is outspoken and has all the right comebacks at all the right times.  (Where are all my kind, accommodating club players at?)Laura highly recommends attending the Taste of Tennis event at least once if you are a die-hard tennis fan; this festive event lets you eat, drink, and mingle right alongside the world's best tennis players.Laura admires Venus Williams above all other tennis players, because she fights hard and works to come back until the very end of a match, which is an example of a champion we can all appreciate. We talked a lot about Nick Kyrgios and his antics on the court, as well as his public mental health struggles. Check out Nick and pray for his healthy return to the court.Laura also shared details about how she works on her social media content, getting support from her teenage children. 6 - Erika Vujnovich talks about the real sports mom of Westchester County
Erika Vujnovich is a former Ivy League tennis player who is now raising two athletes of her own: a 16-year old nationally ranked tennis player and a 13-year old baseball player. She is a true sports enthusiast with a passion discussing sports parenting issues as well as the importance of introducing sports to children at a young age.Erika's Notes from the Sidelines:Being a sports parent means juggling: finances (camps, clubs, private lessons, teams, sports psychologists, gear), work schedules, social schedules with friends, and spending quality time with family, knowing it will mean missing out on special occasions, because being there for big tournaments and games is important to the athlete's future.Being an athlete means sacrifice and a lingering feeling of, "Are we missing something," which leads to a lot of stress.Erika's best advice to new moms is to get kids involved in sports as soon as possible because of the many benefits:disciplineteaches maturityteaches how to deal with lossesteaches how to celebrate wins without being obnoxious about itteaches confidenceteaches how to be healthy teaches mental toughness on the court and in the classroomIn sports, there are winners and losers, and we must acknowledge that our children are going to lose. There is nothing like the feeling of connection for sports moms. (So please join Jentle Coaching for the first Facebook Live Sports Mom Connection Call on Tuesday, February 13, at 7pm ET) Have fun.Check out Kirsten Jones' #RaisingAthletes podcast and her new book, Raising Empowered Athletes.
