Our Editor's Take

The FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast is a data-driven analysis of American politics. Nate Silver, who founded the FiveThirtyEight website, cohosts with staff writer Galen Druke. Other writers from the FiveThirtyEight site discuss their political reporting. The number 538 in the site and podcast name comes from the number of electors in a US presidential election.

Silver first became famous not for politics but for baseball. He developed many concepts behind sabermetrics, a data-heavy approach to baseball. Then he started writing and analyzing politics, starting FiveThirtyEight. When he ran the site as part of The New York Times, Silver became known for his polling averages. In 2008 and 2012, he predicted the correct presidential election results for almost every state. Since then, he has made some incorrect predictions and some good ones. He is still respected for his predictions, though. The FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast talks about those predictions and many other statistical topics.

But that does not mean that this program is a dry show. The hosts use plenty of numbers, but in an understandable, exciting way. The FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast explores why Latino voters are trending Republican. Top Senate and House race results are frequent topics. Billions of dollars of ads run in each election cycle. This podcast analyzes what issues attract the most money.

In addition to current topics, this podcast examines historical issues. The Primaries Project episodes explain the US presidential primary system. They call it an "accident" that it developed the way it has. Listeners learn why. This show also is fearless in admitting when the analysis turns out to be wrong.
