Our Editor's Take

Fans of classical music may enjoy Naxos Classical Spotlight. It's a podcast from Naxos of America, a digital distributor of classical, jazz, and world music. Each episode, host Raymond Bisha interviews composers, conductors, and musicians. They discuss beloved artists from the world of classical music, as well as new projects. Listeners hear excerpts of the music that Raymond and his guests review.

John Corigliano, an American composer, is one of the guests on Naxos Classical Spotlight. John talks with host Raymond about his Naxos album of complete works for solo piano. During the conversation, John reflects on his career and shares how he created some of the music on the album.

In another podcast episode, Raymond interviews conductor Andrew Penny. They talk about the orchestral works of the English composer Sir Malcolm Arnold. Andrew recorded this music for Naxos with two orchestras. They note how Arnold's dance suites differ in tone from his symphonies.

Later, Raymond gets a different perspective on classical music. He speaks with conductor and Naxos artist Marin Alsop. Marin recorded Gustav Mahler's reorchestration of Robert Schumann's four symphonies. Marin and Raymond focus on the topic of reorchestration. Marin views it as an homage to the original work. She points out that Mahler "adored" Schumann's symphonies. Marin believes that reorchestration shows "one genius through the eyes of another."

The podcast also highlights modern-day classical music. Raymond introduces an opera that Björk's concept album Vespertine inspired. Björk is an Icelandic performer and composer who had international fame in the 1980s and 1990s. The score of the opera is for four soloists and two choirs. Acoustic instruments recreate all the electronic sounds from Björk's album.

Naxos Classical Spotlight offers compelling perspectives for classical music enthusiasts. The podcast may also intrigue those who are curious about classical music. New episodes are available every other week.
