Our Editor's Take

The podcast The Triathlon Hour began as an answer to the host's curiosity. As an athlete, Jack Kelly always wondered how professionals train to achieve success. When researching for that information, he couldn't find any resources. Jack felt like these were trade secrets that no one was willing to share. After immersing himself in the triathlon world and getting to know coaches and experts, he realized that people are happy to talk. What is missing is a facilitator to open the conversation.

It is these discussions that Jack brings to his podcast. In the show, he explores topics like nutrition, endurance, schedules, and more. Episodes reveal rigorous physical routines and mental health struggles. The goals are to help people while training and to discover more about this industry.

The podcast host began his interest in triathlons when he was only 11. Jack watched races, bought magazines about the sport, and memorized states. He was a true fan. It wasn't until he was 18 that he got his bike and joined his first race. Jack didn't have a structured way of training, but he enjoyed his chaotic process. Later, during his university years, he worked with coaches and did 30 hours a week of training. This led him to winning races. However, his overachievement affected his health in a negative way and led him to crash his bike. From that point, he could no longer compete with the professionals. In a way, the podcast is his attempt to stay close to the sport he enjoys so much.

Each episode of The Triathlon Hour is an interview with a different expert. Jack asks them questions to get a complete picture of their training routines. Guests share their afraid-to-ask difficult questions and explore taboo topics. For instance, he often brings up eating disorders, body image issues, and doping. The conversations on the podcast are both informative and candid. They present the highs and lows of endurance training and provide advice to navigate it.
