Our Editor's Take

True crime podcasts have become popular over the last several years. Missing & Murdered: Finding Cleo is a podcast focusing on a harrowing investigation into a missing child. What makes this podcast unique is how it intertwines with the personal story of the host.

Missing & Murdered: Finding Cleo talks about a death involving an indigenous child. In the 1970s, Cleo Semaganis, a young Cree girl, went missing. She was born in Canada but ended up in the United States after her enrollment in a controversial program. The goal of this program was to place Native children with American families. Her body would later appear under tragic and mysterious circumstances. Cleo's family believes something terrible happened to Cleo while attempting to return home back to Canada. They came to this conclusion after reading Cleo's letters. But who was the responsible party? Why were the police so reluctant to investigate this case in its entirety?

Veteran Canadian journalist Connie Walker hosts Missing & Murdered: Finding Cleo. She has several decades of experience as a professional journalist. Connie is a Cree journalist who has spent much of her career reporting on these stories. She has also brought to light several cases involving missing Indigenous women. As a Cree woman, Walker has a personal connection to these cases.

Most journalists don't often explore painful chapters in their past by proxy. Walker, however, feels she should assist fellow Native women in any way she can. Using her platform, she is attempting to help these families find justice and solace.

Some of the most powerful moments happen when she interviews Cleo's siblings. This podcast discusses the investigation into the case of a missing child. It is also an indictment of one of the darkest chapters in Canada's modern history. A chapter that is only recently coming to light in many cases. Missing & Murdered: Finding Cleo spans two seasons. Each episode of the podcast runs about an hour in length.
