Our Editor's Take

The Without Compromise podcast shares stories from people living without compromise. Its host is Mason Gravley. He runs the Athletic Brewing Company's ambassador program. The show's title follows the values set out by this certified B Corp company. It's not only passionate about making non-alcoholic beer and "brewing without compromise." The company's mission is to encourage its community to live healthy, happy lives.

The community inspired the podcast, as many live without compromise. The Athletic Brewing team wanted to showcase these individuals to inspire others further. Guests on the podcast include athletes, adventurers, and entrepreneurs. What they all have in common is the drive to pursue their passions and not settle for anything less. The series also shares company news, from events to ambassador updates.

One podcast episode interviews Pete Ceglinski about a unique environmental project. Pete is the CEO and cofounder of Seabin, which is on a mission to clean the ocean and remove all plastic pollution. Not only do they collect waste, they also collate data on each piece, tracking where it came from. Mason talks to Pete about his idea and how he saw the effects of plastic pollution as a yacht racer.

Another podcast episode interviews professional British footballer Ellie Roebuck. She competed for the English national team in the finals against Spain in 2023. Mason asks her about where it all began and what she does every day to ensure she meets her goals. Ellie reveals how the sport started as a hobby until she realized her dream of being a professional player could be a reality. She also talks about the decisions she had to make and the fears she was able to overcome.

Everyone thought Garrett was crazy to leave his high-rise office job to join a brewery in the attic of a building in 1989. Ever since Garrett had learned about all the craft styles that existed while traveling in Europe, he couldn’t help but think about ways to bring that variety and those styles of beer back to the US. Fast forward to today and Garrett has been the Brewmaster at Brooklyn Brewing for over 30 years. Something he couldn’t help but notice in the industry is the lack of diversity. Being one of the only black brewers in the early days has instilled in him the desire to re-diversify brewing through his work with the Michael James Jackson Foundation. They are an organization that funds brewing education scholarships to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Here at Athletic Brewing, we contribute up to $2 million annually to protect and restore local trails through our Two For The Trails program. Over the last handful of years, this initiative has impacted hundreds of local organizations and thousands of miles of trails. Today we wanted to highlight just one of those stories and the impact the funded project is having on the local community. Miri Hardy, the executive director of Friends of Myakka River joins us for a rare in-person interview out in the state park where Two For The Trail funds will be used to develop much-needed trail signs to help backcountry travelers safely and confidently explore the park’s backcountry. Miri’s personal story is also unique in that she had the curiosity and gumption to push herself to understand the complex and beautiful ecosystems deeper into the lesser-known parts of her local trails and her desire to help others do the same.

Ken Rideout has a story that sounds like a movie script. Starting out as a prison guard that didn’t get into running until his 30’s. Now in his 50’s, he’s faster than ever, and winning races all over the world. This past spring he entered his very first ultra marathon, the 155-mile Gobi March. In addition to it being his first ultra, he had never camped before, but had to sleep on the ground each night of the adventure. Also, he won. Less than a week later Ken entered the 2023 Beer Mile World Classic, which featured a celebrity race as part of the 9th annual event. The Celebrity NA Beer Mile was presented by Athletic Brewing featured a star-studded celebrity field. Ken also won that. We’re going to chat today with Ken about his mindset, how he gets faster every year, and what keeps him confident and humble as he challenges himself in new ways on a regular basis.
