Our Editor's Take

Undermine is a podcast presented by Phish fans for Phish fans. This undertaking is an intense exploration of the multi-genre band. Conversations and interviews revolve around the band's music and impact on pop culture. A sizable chunk of the podcast's content includes the band's dedicated fanbase. Formed in 1983, the band is notable for its blend of genres, musical improvisation, and jams. The podcast hosts create an enjoyable listen for Phish fans through research, interviews, and insight.

Phish lyricist Tom Marshall hosted the first three seasons of the Undermine podcast. The songs he wrote for the band include "Bouncing Around the Room," "The Wedge," and "Rift." Tom is also the executive producer of the show. New York Times bestselling author Benjy Eisen acts as cohost in some episodes. Osiris Media CEO RJ Bee also joins the panel on occasion. Journalists Gabrielle Bluestone and James Del started cohosting the podcast in its fifth season.

Undermine presents Phish's history from their Vermont roots to date. Through interviews and narration, it tells the inspiring story of the band. It spans from the band's formation to its breakups, make-ups, and present day. Hosts talk to collaborators, fans, and producers. They complement the music with discussions about its impact on fans and other bands. The podcast also examines other bands inspired by Phish. Listeners can expect interviews with musicians, actors, and other superfans.

Interviews feature celebrity fans such as Southern Charm's Austen Kroll. Kroll and the hosts discuss the overlap between Phish and Bravo TV fans, among other topics. In another episode, The Bear actor Chris Witaske chats with Gabrielle and James. He talks about becoming a fan of Phish in middle school. This podcast is part musical exposition and part history. New episodes debut on a periodic basis.
