The Patio Podcast

Kate Kareha

The Patio Podcast is a wistful exploration of my hometown's enduring attachment to Hess’s Department Store. In candid conversations with residents, historians, collectors, former shoppers and employees, The Patio hopes to shed light on Allentown, Pennsylvania’s multigenerational interest in one single place.

Does nostalgia this visceral unite a city, or hold it back? How has Max Hess Jr.’s marketing genius endured? What happened to his famous chandeliers? And how good was all that whipped cream pie, really? The Patio Podcast is a new collection of Hess’s memories, meant for the here and now!

S2 E11: Wayne Holben (PART 2) + Season Two Finale!
This is the Season Two Finale, but there is so much more ahead as we approach the One-Year Anniversary of The Patio Podcast! Thank you to all the cheerleaders, listeners, and guests who made this incredible project possible. You're responsible for preserving your local history and Hess's legacy-- I can't think of a greater gift we could possibly share!     During his 25-years at Hess's, Wayne Holben worked his way up to Director of Public Relations. His longest stretch as a Hess’s co-worker began in 1973, one week after he returned from three-years of serving overseas in the Army. Prior to that, Wayne had various roles as a stock-boy, then worked in merchandising. Before he was old enough to work, often at the request of Mr. Hess, Wayne ran odd-jobs with his father, Wayne Holben Sr. Wayne Sr. worked at Hess’s from 1951 until he passed away in March of 1968. He was the sales promotions manager, and during his 11th year with Hess Brothers he was elected Secretary of the firm’s Board of Directors. My guest, Wayne Jr., had the tough job in the early 1990’s of making many public announcements as Hess’s closed stores, removed chandeliers, and sold Max Hess Jr.’s in-store antique collection at auction. But for years prior, Wayne was responsible for the team of moment-makers who brought you some of your most cherished Hess’s memories. From product promotions, to celebrity visits, to car and vacation give-aways— it was Wayne’s job to engage and entertain Hess’s shoppers 365-days a year. All while doing what the best PR men and women do— remaining invisible and behind the scenes, at all times!I knew Wayne was highly respected before I met him, and as I think back to our conversation, I know that I would have really enjoyed working for him too.The Patio's original music: Theme created and produced by Dave Meyers, with Vocals by Sam Cummings.Follow us on Instagram @HessPatioPodcastConnect on Facebook with The Patio PodcastVisit our website www.hesspatiopodcast.com

VOTE The Patio Podcast  for BEST LOCAL PODCAST in the 2024 Best of the Lehigh Valley Survey! Best Local Podcast is category #134, type in "The Patio Podcast" Vote online at www.bestofthelehighvalley.comDeadline is Monday, February 5, 2024...(Part 1 is audio + Part 2 is a video on YouTube)Lois, Tina, and Lori are three members of a small tribe they fondly referred to as The Hess’s Girls. This group of seven friends had career paths at Hess’s that overlapped and intersected for anywhere from 18-months to many years. Ever since receiving pink-slips in 1995 when all employees were laid off, The Hess’s Girls have kept in touch over dinners, girls nights, and Christmas ornament exchanges.Lois, Tina, and Lori were all talented artists in Hess's Advertising Department, with college degrees in graphic design or fashion illustration. Their careers evolved from drawing high-end fashion by hand, to staging props, directing photographers, and developing film. Tina and Lois are the artists behind some of your favorite Hess’s ads of the late 80’s and early 90’s. They navigated long hours, high pressure deadlines, changing technology, and the uncommon practice (at that time) of returning to high pressure jobs after maternity leave.  Enjoy! **VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Watch Part 2 on YouTube!Tina and Lois's  show us their portfolios from their Hess's-days. S2 E8: Hess's First Female Executive, with John Ziegler

S2 E8: Hess's First Female Executive, with John Ziegler
Mrs. Frances Ziegler’s 28-year career at Hess Brothers includes some of the most dynamic stories we have heard to date. If she had not spent years carefully assembling one scrapbook for her son, John Ziegler, it is very likely that her story would never have been told.  In this episode, John, adopted son of Mrs. Ziegler, and I comb through that scrapbook to share stories and theories about the golden years of Hess's.  Mrs. Frances Ziegler was best known as Hess Brothers Business Manager and Assistant to the President-- serving as one of Max Hess Jr.‘s most trusted executives up until the end.  Given those positions, John brings with him some of the most colorful memories/stories we have head about Mr. Hess.Between 1942 and 1968, her name shows up in the newspaper dozens of times. Sometimes her job titles change and overlap, but one of the most important details to know is that in 1956 she joined Hess Brothers Board of Directors as a newly elected member of the firm.  At that time, of the 12 members listed, only two were female. The other being Elizabeth Douglass Hess, Vice President, and wife of Mr. Hess.Francis traveled to Europe at least 22 times, often for weeks on end, with Hess’s famous fashion director, Jerry Golden.  Not only was she a highly respected leader amongst the personnel team, Mrs. Ziegler was often photographed wearing the first European fashions of their kind to be seen in the United States. She was a manager, a maverick and a mother. VIDEO: See Ziegler family Christmas cards that I gush about inside this episode! https://youtu.be/fRy4zuXmcqU?si=j9MsBtO-nglF8AlfAdditional photos and videos from John's scrapbook coming soon!!The Patio's original music: Theme created and produced by Dave Meyers, with Vocals by Sam Cummings.Follow us on Instagram @HessPatioPodcastConnect on Facebook with The Patio PodcastVisit our website www.hesspatiopodcast.com

S2 E5: Steve Greenberg talks Merchandise, Mistakes & Mr. Hess
Nov 7 2023
S2 E5: Steve Greenberg talks Merchandise, Mistakes & Mr. Hess
Steve Greenberg is the son of Hess’s last, local Chairman & CEO, Irwin Greenberg. The stories Steve shares speak for themselves, but the level of detail he recalls is one of the most remarkable things we've heard on The Patio Podcast.  There is no doubt that Irwin and Steve Greenberg experienced so much of this business together, and when they were not together, Irwin nurtured their relationship by sharing many ideas and decisions of running a business like Hess’s. Steve does not hesitate trying to recall a single detail, he seems to remember them all! TRANSCRIPT FOR THIS EPISODE CAN BE FOUND HERE: www.hesspatiopodcast.com/steve-greenberg-transcriptionSteve has been a part of "retail royalty" his entire life. In this episode he shares the Greenberg family history at Hess's; how the store's many transitions shaped his father's career; memories of Mr. Max Hess Jr.; plus 30+ years of opportunity and mistakes inside the many locations of Hess's Department Store. Steve also shares an update on his dad today (hiya Irwin!!). Irwin Greenberg ended his career as president, CEO and chairman of Hess’s in 1990. Irwin worked there for 35-years, starting as merchandiser under the leadership of the great Max Hess Jr. At the time of his retirement, Hess’s had grown to 75 or 76 locations (both numbers have been reported) in the US.The Patio's original music: Theme created and produced by Dave Meyers, with Vocals by Sam Cummings.Follow us on Instagram @HessPatioPodcastConnect on Facebook with The Patio PodcastVisit our website www.hesspatiopodcast.com

S2 E3: Ryan Kelly & The Rad Years of Retail
*Special Crossover Episode with The Rad Years Podcasthost, Ryan Kelly!* In the early 1990’s when some Hess’s chandeliers were sold off, and the Toy Department was removed from the flagship store, Lehigh Valley Native, Ryan Kelly, was just a kid who wanted to get THROUGH Hess’s in the mall as fast as possible. Ryan, like many of his peers, was a Mall Rat, who was more interested in the comic book section of Walden Books than Hess’s.Still, Ryan has done more to highlight the Lehigh Valley’s bygone retailers than most, as co-host of The Rad Years Podcast. Ryan and co-host, Squeezer, have released more than 400 episodes of The Rad Years Podcast. They knows a TON about the brands and pop-culture that defined the end of the 20th Century— an era that is wildly impacting the fashion and entertainment of 2023! Each week, Ryan and Squeezer talk about the things they loved growing up in the 1980‘s and 90‘s. Episode 7: Don Serfass, May the 4th Be With You

Episode 7: Don Serfass, May the 4th Be With You
May the 4th Be With You! Today we're bringing you a special STAR WARS episode featuring Donald Serfass. Don was hired as part of the Advertising & Public Relations department, and had a robust career at Hess's from 1976-1980. Star Wars was released in May 1977. It's hard for many people to remember a time before Star Wars, which revolutionized movie technology, franchising, and movie merchandise as we know it today.  It was impossible to overstate how big a phenomenon Star Wars has been for generations. No one expected it to be a hit, so while Hollywood-merchandisers scrambled to catch up with the demand for toys, Hess’s and other select stores around the country filled the galaxy-size gap in the market with The Force Beam-- just in time for Christmas 1977.  While it was not an official Lucas Film's toy, it satisfied many crazed Star Wars fans, and became one of many examples of how Hess's was able to see an "it-factor" from miles away-- keeping them on the cutting edge of merchandising for almost 100 years. MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:Under My Hat: The Best of Everything, by Donald Serfass (2021)About The Force Beam, by Cyriaque Lamar (2012)Episode Nothing Blog: The Force Beam (2017)The Real Story Behind the 'Star Wars' Opening Weekend 45 Years Ago, by Tom Brueggemann (Indie Wire 2022)The Patio's original music: Theme created and produced by Dave Meyers, with Vocals by Sam Cummings.Follow us on Instagram @HessPatioPodcastConnect on Facebook with The Patio PodcastVisit our website www.hesspatiopodcast.com

Episode 6: Frank Whelan, Inside Max's Candy Store
THIS IS THE GUY!!! Frank Whelan is a historian, author and educator. He is the author of WFMZ.com's weekly History's Headlines feature. To be clear, there would be no Patio Podcast if I did not first get Frank’s blessing back in the winter of 2022. Frank Whelan was a feature writer with the Morning Call newspaper in Allentown from 1981 to 2006 where he wrote over 2000 articles. He was the historian in residence, and director of community outreach and special projects at the Lehigh County Historical Society from 2006 to 2009.Whelan has written five books on Lehigh Valley history. He is the co-author with Kurt D. Zwikl of "Hess's Department Store."
