Löyly + The Spirit of Sauna Culture
UPDATE: Permaculture Freedom podcast is now called Land by Hand podcast. Listen to the first couple minutes to learn more about this update and the direction the show is headed. And for the main content of this episode...It's Sauna season and I thought this show might be a great introduction to the cultural traditions of Sauna from the far north of Scandinavia and it's migration to the Upper Midwest of North America. I've put together a beautiful introduction to Sauna from many voices sharing their traditions, stories & folklore. Enjoy!“My sauna cabin is primitive, one step removed from the first excavations in the hillsides of Finland. I wanted it that way for I felt it must be close to the earth, so much a part of the natural environment that simple values would not be lost… Simplicity is the keynote, but when steam rises from the stones and the sprays of steam and give off their fragrance, the sauna comes into its own.” -Sigurd Olson, Runes of the NorthLearn more about this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. Haymaking by Hand + Anarchy Acres, Jim Kovaleski, Tap o' Noth Permaculture Farm & more...
It's that time of year to make some hay for the winter so we thought it would be a good idea to get into the weeds of making hay on a small-scale traditionally by hand. This episode is for all the folks who don't have the land or tractor to make hay on a larger scale, but want to mow their lawns, fields or meadows to make hay or bedding for their animals. In this episode, you can learn about different types of grass hay, alfalfa hay & tree hay for nutrients for livestock and of course, the methods of taking up a scythe and learning one of man’s oldest agricultural arts: cutting hay by hand and storing it loose for the winter. Growing a Holistic Orchard + Michael Phillips
In this episode we are honoring the work & life of Michael Phillips, the 'beyond-organic' holistic orchardist, teacher, writer & consultant, who recently passed away. The audio in this episode is from the "Successful Biological Orcharding" workshop Michael facilitated in an organic apple orchard grown by Pat Tompkins. There is much wisdom to learn from Michael's lifelong legacy connecting with the biological world. To support Michael's work and his family, visit their memorial page here > Thank you! We hope you enjoy the nutrient-dense biological wisdom Michael has to share! As above, so below. As below, so above. A diverse plant community bound by an array of mycorrhizal fungal species will form a 'common root being' throughout the orchard. The trees produce healthy fruit in accord with how we revere this sacred soil partnership. - Michael PhillipsLearn more about this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >Growing 'organic' has always been a given. Understanding how Nature does health fascinates me to no end. Working with biology and nutrition produces flavorful apples that are good for us. Compare that to the visually-pleasing orbs produced by toxic chemistry. That I choose not to certify our farm as organic with the USDA makes for good discussion over a glass of cider. Check out my network grower profile to better understand what a holistic orchardist does to bless up this earth. - Michael PhillipsMichael Phillips was a farmer, writer, carpenter, orchard consultant, and speaker. He lived with his wife, Nancy, and daughter, Grace, on Heartsong Farm in northern New Hampshire, growing apples and a variety of medicinal herbs. Michael is the author of Mycorrhizal Planet, The Apple Grower (Chelsea Green, 2005) and The Holistic Orchard (2011), and teamed up with Nancy to write The Herbalist’s Way (2005). His Lost Nation Orchard is part of the Holistic Orchard Network, and Michael also led the community orchard movement. Maple Syrup + Tapping into the Spirit of the North

Maple Syrup + Tapping into the Spirit of the North
Springtime in the Northwoods is a beautiful time of year when the natural world begins waking up from a long winter hibernation. We all have these natural rhythms within us as well that are intimately connected to the place we call home. For us in the North, this is a special time when we can tap into this much needed flow of life by literally tapping into the sap flow of Maple trees here at our farmstead. We also love savoring this sap fresh before heating & evaporating it into Maple Syrup. It is like drinking slightly sweetened water that is incredibly refreshing and also has trace minerals, antioxidants & a natural form of sugar. Learn more about this tradition from several voices speaking about the spirit of making Maple Syrup. ...the truth is that the earth endows us with great gifts, the other half is that the gift is not enough. The responsibility does not lie with the maples alone. The other half belongs to us; we participate in its transformation. It is our work, and our gratitude, that distills the sweetness. - Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding SweetgrassLearn more about the inspiring folks from this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here > - - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. Slöjd & Green Woodworking + Jögge Sundquist, Jarrod Dahl, Ben Law, Barn the Spoon, Robin Wood

Slöjd & Green Woodworking + Jögge Sundquist, Jarrod Dahl, Ben Law, Barn the Spoon, Robin Wood
In honor of our wintertime in our neck of the woods, we are focusing on different themes of making the most of long winter downtime in the Northern parts of the world. To start things off, we begin this series with introducing the concept of Slöjd (or Sloyd) which is a Swedish word that for many hundreds of years has referred to being self sufficient through the act of craft. Simple hand tools, simple techniques to build anything. Hear some interviews with several folks of the Scandinavian Slöjd tradition of woodworking and beyond to American, English & Japanese traditions as well."Slöjd is part of the self-sufficient household, how people survived before industrialization. Slöjd is the work method farmers used when they made tools for house building, farming and fishing, and objects for their household needs. For thousands of years, the knowledge of the material has deepened, and the use of the tools has evolved along with the understanding of how function, composition and form combine to make objects strong and useful. The word slöjd derives from the word stem slög, which dates to the 9th century. Slög means ingenious, clever and artful. It reflects the farmers’ struggle for survival and how it made them skilled in using the natural materials surrounding the farm: wood, flax, hide, fur, horn and me- tal. I have picked up a dialect expression from my home county, Västerbotten, that has become a personal motto. We say Int’ oslög, “not uncrafty,” about a person who is handy and practical. Slöjd in its pure self-sufficient use is characterized by an individual using simple tools with great skill, a deep knowledge of raw materials, and the ability to solve functional problems. The resulting objects are intended for the maker’s personal use." - Jögge SundquistLearn more about the inspiring folks from this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >Hear about green woodworking for carving spoons, turning bowls and more from voices like Jögge Sundquist, Jarrod Dahl, Ben Law, Barn the Spoon, Robin Wood, Sylva Spoon & more…Enjoy and happy woodworking!- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. Relocalizing Food Systems + Joel Salatin
In this episode, I want to share some interviews with Joel Salatin, his family & others he's inspired that focus on the themes of re-localizing and finding real solutions to the problems of our civilization from the ground up. How we can rebuild local communities and transform commerce by staying connected to nature, our neighbors, and the larger world while reducing our energy needs and eating more nourishing food. This is most likely the first of many episodes to share about Joel Salatin's inpiring work and perhaps we can even get an interview with Joel in the near future! Joel Salatin, 62, calls himself a Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer. Others who like him call him the most famous farmer in the world, the high priest of the pasture, and the most eclectic thinker from Virginia since Thomas Jefferson. With a room full of debate trophies from high school and college days, 12 published books, and a thriving multi-generational family farm, he draws on a lifetime of food, farming and fantasy to entertain and inspire audiences around the world. He’s as comfortable moving cows in a pasture as addressing CEOs in a Wall Street business conference. He co-owns, with his family, Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia. Featured in the New York Times bestseller Omnivore’s Dilemma and award-winning documentary Food Inc., the farm services more than 5,000 families, 50 restaurants, 10 retail outlets, and a farmers’ market with salad bar beef, pigaerator pork, pastured poultry, and forestry products. When he’s not on the road speaking, he’s at home on the farm, keeping the callouses on his hands and dirt under his fingernails, mentoring young people, inspiring visitors, and promoting local, regenerative food and farming systems.Learn more about Joel Salatin, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. Global Gardener + Bill Mollison

Global Gardener + Bill Mollison
Bill Mollison, the “Father of Permaculture,” has truly left the world a better place than he found it. As co-founder of the system of Permaculture with David Holmgren , he created a holistic design system that emulates systems that exist in Nature to create sustainable human settlements and food production systems which integrate harmoniously with the natural environment. Bill developed the Permaculture Institute and a formalized system for training Permaculture practitioners. His pioneering work had a broad and far-reaching global influence, directly impacted hundreds of thousands of lives, and indirectly affecting many millions more worldwide in a profound and positive way. This is most likely the first of many episodes to share about Bill Mollison in his amazing video series, 'Global Gardener'. Global Gardener is a documentary film series about the permaculture approach to sustainable agriculture. Bill Mollison presents the series' four episodes—"In the Tropics", "Dry Lands", "Cool Climates", and "Urban"—each of which addresses the application of permaculture principles in a different environmental context. I highly encourage you to watch all the videos, but here is the audio to learn from Bill's wisdom while in your garden or hammock - where the permaculture designer becomes a recliner ;) Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless labor; and of looking at plants and animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single product system― Bill MollisonLearn more about Bill Mollison, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here >- - -Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. Philosophy of Biodynamic Farming + Rudolf Steiner
Jan 18 2021
Philosophy of Biodynamic Farming + Rudolf Steiner
Austrian philosopher and educational reformer Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925) remains perhaps best known for the educational methods he pioneered in his Waldorf schools, which have spread slowly but steadily around the world since his death. The New Age philosopher, Rudolf Steiner was the most prolific and arguably the most influential philosopher of his era. “Our highest endeavor must be to develop free human beings who are able of themselves to impart purpose and direction to their lives. The need for imagination, a sense of truth, and a feeling of responsibility—these three forces are the very nerve of education.”  ― Rudolf Steiner Rudolf Steiner also anticipated the growth of organic farming in his opposition to chemical fertilizers. In his view, a farm should be a self-contained ecological entity. Biodynamic Farming is based on Steiner's spiritual scientific research drawn from the belief that everything that is alive is a process undergoing a constant transformation. Compared to organic farming (in common they have: a holistic vision, a closed cycle farming organism, no synthetic chemicals, use of species that are native to the region, no extreme specialization), biodynamic agriculture is based on a way of thinking and acting that respects both the physical world and the non-physical, spiritual and cosmic realities acting in it. Man is seen as part of nature and not as working against nature: the fundamental aim of biodynamic agriculture is to restore balance and its purpose does not leave things to Nature, but goes beyond Nature, helping it, by supporting its evolution, to obtain a more fertile land that is richer with life. Holistic Animal & Pet Health + Juliette de Baïracli Levy
Juliette was an herbalist, author, and breeder of Afghan hounds, friend of the Gypsies, traveler in search of herbal wisdom, pioneer of holistic veterinary medicine & the natural rearing method. For more than sixty years she lived with the Gypsies, nomads and peasants of the world, learning the healing arts of these peoples who live close to nature and listening to nature herself. She was an inspiration to many folks - herbalists, farmers, ranchers, holistic vets & everyday pet owners that seek to raise their animals in a natural way - for this reason, we added in some extra clips from holistic vets to share their perspectives on diet & healthcare. I hope you enjoy this show and give a little extra love to the animals in your life!   About the Show: 01:00 - Juliette of the Herbs01:13:00 - List of Best and Worst Pet Foods w/ Dr. Becker01:33:00 - Destructive practices in modern animal careJuliette de Bairacli Levy was an herbalist, author, and breeder of Afghan hounds, friend of the Gypsies, traveler in search of herbal wisdom and the pioneer of holistic veterinary medicine. Keyline Design + P.A. Yeomans

Keyline Design + P.A. Yeomans
P.A. Yeomans work had a very strong influence on the concepts of Permaculture design...One of his main approaches, referred to as Keyline design, details the principles, techniques and systems for ecological development of rural and urban landscapes. Keyline methods enable the rapid development of deep biologically fertile soil by converting subsoil into living topsoil. Keyline pattern cultivation enables the rapid flood irrigation of undulating land without terracing. Incidental results are the healing of soil erosion, bio-adsorption of salinity and the long term storage of atmospheric carbon in the soil as humus. The Keyline Scale of Permanence provides a priority guide to planning the various factors of broad scale development. I hope you enjoy some of these classic documentary videos & interviews about this regenerative approach to land management.   About the Show: 01:00 - P A Yeomans-Keyline in the Kiewa Valley 13:00 - P A Yeomans-Keyline Interview Part 1 38:00 - P A Yeomans-Keyline Interview Part 2 01:13:00 - Keyline Design at Markegard Family Grass-FedPercival Alfred Yeomans was an Australian inventor known for the Keyline system for the development of land and increasing the fertility of that land. As a mining engineer and gold assayer, Yeomans had developed a keen sense of hydrology and equipment design. He developed improved methods and equipment for cultivation. “No artist or artisan ever has such broad control of the medium through which he expresses his own character and personality as does the farmer or grazier in the control he can exercise over his land. The landman can create his own landscape, but the artist gives only his impression of it …” — P.A. YeomansHis Keyline principles or concepts (Keyline Design) have been adopted by farm owners in almost every country in the world. Yeomans' Keyline concepts are now part of the curriculum of many sustainable agriculture courses across the world. His ideas have also been a key factor in the development of Permaculture design. Regenerative Diet + Dr. Weston A. Price

Regenerative Diet + Dr. Weston A. Price
Health is the topic of much conversation and controversy these days, but unfortunately diet doesn't seem to get as much attention as viruses, shots & germs...Food is our medicine which we consume several times a day and unfortunately there is so much conflict of opinion of the 'one right way' to do it. I'm not here to add my 'one right way' diet to that noise, but I am here to share about someone who has focused on the patterns beneath the surface. The research and findings of this man's work detail not so much a 'diet' but more of a pattern that adapts across the world to harmonize people and place to their own unique bioregional context. The patterns underneath the diet are the true understanding - vitamins, minerals, fat and nutrient-density which have been eroding from the global industrial food system for quite some time - the true health and vitality that is increasingly lacking from modern society. Because of this reason and many others, I have yet to find an approach to nourishing ourselves that is as simple, timeless, and so closely integrated with Nature as the approach that Dr. Weston A. Price has helped shed some light on. An approach that is as old as time and without which, we wouldn't be alive today...There is a 'new and improved' diet just about every day of the week, but this approach is one that stands the test of time. Now more than ever we need to focus on regeneration of our health AND our earth. Despite what you may hear from many mainstream sources, farming with animals, eating nutrient-dense foods and working WITH nature is part of the solution. I sincerely hope you find some info from this show helpful on your path towards wholeness and health.About the Show: 01:00 - 16:09: - Vintage documentary of Weston A. Price in the field16:10 - 23:50: - Introduction to traditional eating23:51 - 38:39 - Prenatal nutrition with Sally Fallon38:39 - 43:52 - Opposition of Weston A Price's research43:52 - 49:00 - Real milk vs modern industrial milk49:00 - 52:00 - What is regenerative agriculture (i.e. raising animals WITH nature)52:00 - 01:05:45 - Regenerative agriculture farm tourDr. Weston A. Price was a Canadian born dentist known primarily for his theories on the relationship between nutrition, dental health, and physical health. He was the founder of the National Dental Association, a research section of the American Dental Association (ADA). He is most well known for his 1939 book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, detailing his global travels studying the diets and nutrition of various cultures. “In my studies, I find that it is not accident but accumulated wisdom regarding food that lies behind their physical excellence and freedom from our modern degenerative processes, and, further, that on various sides of our world the primitive people know many of the things that are essential for life—things that our modern civilizations apparently do not know. These are the fundamental truths of life that have put them in harmony with Mother Nature through obeying her nutritional laws.” —Weston A. PricePrice collected some 15,000 photographs, 4,000 slides, and numerous filmstrips. He also took copious notes about indigenous diets, analyzing the nutritional value of native food based on what was known about vitamins and nutrition at the time. Price concluded that America’s health crisis had more likely been brought on by the introduction of processed foods. Price argued that when traditional communities abandoned indigenous diets and adopted Western patterns of eating, they began to suffer from typical Western diseases. He concluded that Western methods of commercially preparing and storing foods stripped away vitamins and minerals necessary to maintain health... Whole Systems Design + Buckminster Fuller

Whole Systems Design + Buckminster Fuller
In this episode, I am highlighting the interdisciplinary work of Buckminster Fuller and his emphasis on whole systems design. His approach of doing more with less has had a huge impact on folks both within and outside of Permaculture Design practice - including myself long before I heard the word Permaculture, I learned about Bucky Fuller, Geodesic domes, the Whole Earth Catalog and the whole systems design movement of the early & mid 20th Century. I also really identified with his discipline of learning for oneself, from direct experience - He states that "man must learn to think for himself, rather than follow blindly what he has been taught." I hope enjoy another show digging into the roots of Permaculture...About the Show: 01:00 - 01:38: Intellectual Outlaw01:38 - 05:02: 3 Minutes w/ Bucky Fuller05:02 - 01:00:11: 1974 Interview01:00:11 - 01:08:15: Doing more with less01:08:15: - 01:11:57: Do your own thinkingR. Buckminster Fuller was a renowned 20th century inventor and visionary. Dedicating his life to making the world work for all of humanity, Fuller operated as a practical philosopher who demonstrated his ideas as inventions that he called “artifacts.” Fuller did not limit himself to one field but worked as a 'comprehensive anticipatory design scientist' to solve global problems surrounding housing, shelter, transportation, education, energy, ecological destruction, and poverty. “I AM NOW CLOSE TO 88 and I am confident that the only thing important about me is that I am an average healthy human. I am also a living case history of a thoroughly documented, half-century, search-and-research project designed to discover what, if anything, an unknown, moneyless individual, with a dependent wife and newborn child, might be able to do effectively on behalf of all humanity that could not be accomplished by great nations, great religions or private enterprise, no matter how rich or powerfully armed.” —Bucky FullerThroughout the course of his life Fuller held 28 patents, authored 28 books, received 47 honorary degrees. Fuller's true impact on the world today can be found in his continued influence upon generations of designers, architects, scientists and artists working to create a more sustainable planet...Learn more, watch the videos from the audio clips, and get a free download of his book Grunch of Giants here >- - -Learn more about skills & knowledge like this to live a natural, resilient lifestyle at Land by Hand - - - If you enjoy the show, please subscribe and consider the following:Share it with someone else in your life Leave a review or rating for the showSubmit a question for us to answer on ‘What would Nature do?” - our Q&A series at landbyhand.org/pfpThanks for listening and your support!- - -Show Update: This is the second episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else I can find. Food Security in Times of Unrest | Casey Dahl
Casey is a friend and crucial part of the Twin Cities Permaculture community, frequently sharing many of his skills learned through work-trading (woofing) like natural building, beekeeping, or optical surveying. Casey is a relevant voice to speak to some of the inefficiencies and injustices that he's experienced working on the front lines of so many strands of the web that is the industrial scale food system. Despite the overwhelming overproduction of food across the world, food security is becoming a pressing issue for more and more folks living in urban areas due to the many links in the food supply chain. In this episode we'll get more into his background and story and I hope to line up a future show to get more into the details and strategies to address food security in the city on a community scale. I hope you enjoy this conversation we have together at such a time of unrest in urban communities around the world...Casey Dahl is a Minneapolis bike commuter that works in grocery. He studied food systems and the environment at the University of Wisconsin Madison and his interests include gardening, beekeeping, landscaping, natural building, playing music and rock climbing.- - -Learn skills & knowledge to live a more natural, resilient lifestyle at Land by Hand - - - If you enjoy the show, please subscribe and do 3 simple things:Share it with someone else in your life Leave a review or rating for the showSubmit a question for us to answer on ‘What would Nature do?” - our Q&A series at landbyhand.org/pfp- - -Show Update: Summer is here on our homestead and we're busy outdoors in the bright sun & fresh air after a long winter hibernation making the most of our short growing season. Natural Farming + Masanobu Fukuoka
This is the first of many shows exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else I can find. I will still continue to record interviews as frequent as I can with incredible folks, but these shows are going to be more about the elders and roots of this movement. I could not think of a better person to start with than a wise sage from Japan named Masanobu Fukuoka and explore what 'Natural Farming' is all about..."The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings." His ideas were also a leading inspiration for the concepts and principles of Permaculture. In this show I share some audio clips from different videos and interviews with and about Fukuoka explaining his natural farming philosophy.
