Our Lord does not want anyone left out of the wholeness and security of life in the kingdom. That’s why he is the Good Shepherd. He leads and loves people into confident living and eternal life. Holy Communion is the highest moment of the Christian life, for Christ is mysteriously present each time we gather at the table and break this bread, symbolic of his act of salvation. The church dares not forget the incredible grace we have to celebrate. It is grace that rolls away the stones from the tombs of our existence and helps to make sense of it all. God did not save the Israelites by taking the serpents away. The Israelites were saved by faith in God’s ability to save them. We always want Jesus to be patient, meek, and mild. But there are many times when bold action is required to cleanse the cancer of greed and avarice from our lives. Jesus models powerfully what true following means as he denies self, takes up the cross, and follows God’s lead. Jesus not only lived in the reality of the kingdom’s presence, he also proclaimed its arrival.
