Guggenheim Fellow biologist/artist Brandon Ballengée leads a week-long Bug Boot Camp turning downtown Baton Rouge into an outdoor lab for the creation of his Love Motels for Insects. When he’s not teaching, he and his wife, sustainable food educator Aurore Ballengée, live at and run the Atelier de la Nature eco-educational campus and nature reserve in Arnaudville.

Original Air Date: 2/26/23 - This week host Pam Bordelon visits with flautist, producer, composer and national recording artist Claudia Hayden, who delighted attendees to our March 2 Jazz Listening Room at the Cary Saurage Community Arts Center. The Louisiana native learned piano and flute as a child, studying under masters like the acclaimed jazz clarinetist Alvin Batiste and flutist Kent Jordan. She has composed original music for major broadcasting networks such as, HBO, CBS, The Discovery Channel, Nickelodeon, VH1, BET and Court-TV.

Original Air Date: 4/23/23 - Sam Erwin’s day job might be as public relations director for the American Sugar Cane League but in his off hours you can find him playing his trumpet as front man for the Florida Street Blowhards and penning books. His latest, Hidden History of Louisiana’s Jazz Age, has lots of the world-famous Louisiana city billed as the birthplace of jazz. He shares several of his findings with host Pam Bordelon on this edition of AC23.

The self-taught artist, known as the “the guy who paints upside down,” specializes in live wedding paintings, original expressionist art and commissioned pieces. Celebrate Black History Month and check out Mike’s work at the State Archives and Southern University.

Originally Aired: 1/1/23 - Baton Rouge native Johnny Palazzotto has become synonymous with discovering new talent and putting Louisiana artists on the international map, earning him a music business Offbeat Magazine’s 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award and induction into the Southern University Jazz Hall of Fame in 2002. His most recent project was producing The Original King Bee Documentary, based on the life of James “Slim Harpo” Moore. The film includes never-before-heard audio interviews with Moore as well as interviews with his wife/manager Lovell Moore Casey, stepson William Gambler and members of the original King Bees band. There are also appearances by Harpo fans Dr. John, Ray Davies, Delbert McClinton and Jimmie Vaughn.

Malaika received one of these grants last year to upgrade the entrance to her studio, making it more accessible for visitors. The Cary Saurage Community Arts Center was the site of this year’s Dubose Fine Arts Festival, whose mission is dedication to excellence in areas of Fine Arts (Visual and Performing) and Classical Piano. Arts Council Education Programs Manager Marie Flowers, who served as coordinator of the festival, shares details on this year’s endeavor to provide direct access opportunities developed through multidisciplinary and intergenerational creative collaboration.
