KRYSTALL POPPIN | Episode 015 | Live! at MFHQ
The fifteenth Wednesday of 2024. A special one. Live! At MFHQ. Our guest this week has been a leader of El Paso’s music scene for close to ten years now. Paving the lane for artists to do the work necessary in order to make a living from your art. From the beginning, she’s put in the time, from moving through the streets of Vegas passing out her music all the way to becoming an official SXSW artist. The lessons learned along the way have shaped her knowledge of the game, and she moves with confidence and awareness of where she’s headed next. With that much time spent on your craft, you can’t help but evolve and adapt to the surroundings of your industry, and she has had a style that’s constantly developed alongside her growth as a person. She bleeds El Paso, born and raised from Central, and she makes it a point for the world to know where she comes from. Her career is a blueprint for El Paso artists, and her success proves that the music birthed from the frontera is built for the world’s stages. We’re excited to sit down and learn more all about it, so without further ado… Ladies and gentlemen, we welcome: KRYSTALL POPPINKeep up with Krystall and all of her future work and announcements everywhere:@krystallpoppinThis journey has been incredible thus far, and we thank you for your support! ADAM ZAROWSKI | Episode 014 | Live! at MFHQ
Here we are on another Wednesday. We’re back with more GOOD conversation with some LEGENDS ONLY in the building. You know what it is: Live! At MFHQ. This week, we step into a profession that we haven’t discussed just yet on the program: Theater. Although we are mostly unfamiliar, our guest is a seasoned vet of the game. He’s experienced several opportunities outside of El Paso that have shown him how theater operates in the big cities. But where his impact is greatest, is his contribution to El Paso’s theater. Our guest created The El Paso 24-Hour Play Festival which challenges the creativity and resourcefulness of a director and theater production team. He has also founded Teatro Neplanta, which he refers to as El Paso’s newest professional theater. I’ve only been able to spend time with our guest on two occasions: when I met him at his play, and this episode. Each time, I feel invited and welcomed to learn all about the ins and outs of theater. His knowledge and confidence of the profession bleed onto you and make you feel more understanding of the power behind theater. One of the strongest things our guest reflects on during the episode is his mission to challenge his audience to think and feel in ways that they are unsure about. To put your audience in the driver seat, and to let them decide their emotions, is to provide someone with power and belonging. Not many people are aware when they have that ability. Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, we welcome… ADAM ZAROWSKI.Keep up with Adam and all of Teatro Neplanta’s upcoming work within the theater arts over on Instagram at:www.instagram.com/teatroneplanta/Learn more about our special 5-year anniversary showcase and purchase your tickets at:www.emmeffpearl.com/grain Chapters:1. 0:00 - Housekeeping2. 1:36 - Introductions3. 3:36 - Catching Up with Theater Director Adam Zarowski4. 13:53 - Appreciating El Paso from a Different Lens5. 18:17 - Remaining Grounded in an Artistic Career6. 28:46 - Directing People to Think and Feel7. 39:51 - Translating Someone Else’s Writing8. 46:25 - The El Paso 24-Hour Play Festival9. 54:40 - Learning How to Lock Onto the Task at Hand10. 1:01:38 - The Age of Imperfections11. 1:08:29 - Theater Realizations Upon Leaving El Paso12. 1:15:22 - The Pros and Cons of Remaining Local13. 1:22:22 - The Value of Trust Within Leadership14. 1:31:04 - What’s Coming Up in April for Theater15. 1:37:43 - Closing WordsLive! at MFHQ is a conversation-driven podcast hosted by the Emmeff Pearl team. GABE ESPARZA | Episode 013 | Live! at MFHQ
We've arrived at our favorite day of the week. Wednesday. Meaning we had another opportunity to share GOOD conversation with another legend. This week, we brought over someone who I had heard plenty about before getting the chance to meet him for the first time. The big crown jewel was even on his bio: Two-Time Latin Grammy Nominated. It's easy to be starstruck by achievements like that here in El Paso, but upon meeting our guest... I was beginning to think... well yeah obviously. The work ethic, the quality, and the character are all three important components of someone's likelihood to succeed. Usually, we see where someone can greatly improve. Now, I won't say our guest has nowhere to improve cause he'll even disagree, but it's hard to pinpoint where exactly his weak point is out of those three. He's become an eternal student of the game, allowing him to set ego aside when creating with the vast world of musicians. He has simultaneously worked with who he considers the Jordans of his profession, allowing him to learn under the best. He has been surrounded by endless family, peers, and teachers who have given him the opportunity to be challenged and inspired into being the most human he can be. And to think he almost joined the Navy instead... (no knock to the Navy, by the way...) Destiny has a funny way of finding you. Ladies and gentlemen, we welcome to the HQ.. MIDNIGHT AT THE LAUNDROMAT | Episode 012 | Live! at MFHQ
MORE WEDNESDAY, MORE LEGENDS. You know what the drill is. GOOD conversation, all the time, Live! at MFHQ. This week, we were honored by the the grace of a good friend. Someone who has taken obstacles and turned them into opportunity. A man of the people. Our guest has dedicated his time to loving the art of Hip-Hop, consistently improving on his presentation of the genre. Through his DJ sets, he demonstrates what it means to communicate with an audience beyond words. And the communication is impeccable. Above all else, he does so while battling with an illness that the world is still trying to understand. His willingness to stay committed to his craft despite his hurdles is an inspiration to creatives of all mediums. It's not easy to turn a struggle into power, but he has used this as a chance to connect with the world on a more purposeful level. We appreciate that. Silver lining is a long term process, and seeing our guest progress through this journey is absolutely a sight to see. We are excited to continue witnessing the story unfold. MAURICIO PASTOR | Episode 011 | Live! at MFHQ
Wednesdays, look no further. You know where we at each time. Live! at MFHQ! Nothing different, legends only in the building! This week, we got an icon that I had the chance to meet with outside of El Paso. I discovered his work through another one of our guests, which demonstrates the good side to social media. Had it not been with our other guest, it would have only been a short matter of time before I discovered his artwork elsewhere. A black and gray specialist, he is a tattoo artist who discovered his craft through curiosity, trial, and error. Learning under the likes of Eric Ward, he quickly developed his skill with the needle, and found himself in the wonderful San Diego, California. Not wasting any time, he has been steadily growing out there over the last half decade, having had to rebuild his clientele from the ground up upon arriving. A challenge for him, however, is an opportunity for achievement, and along with growing his business away from his hometown, he has had the opportunity to refine his habits and lifestyle to better suit him for success as a human. It was a pleasure to hear more about him, as our first encounter was primarily occupied by 4 hours of intense tattooing. Throughout the course of our conversation, I realized and couldn't ignore that I believe him to be not only a positive representation of a tattoo artist, but a creative professional as a whole. An absolute honor to have him at the HQ. JORDAN TAYLOR | Episode 010 | Live! at MFHQ
Wednesday’s here.. in fact.. the TENTH Wednesday is here. That means our TENTH episode here at the HQ! And what do you know.. another legend. This week, we were fortunate enough to sit with another one of our guests from our flagship program, Midnight Sessions. She found her love for music early on, learning much during her youth through the form of it, and steadily developed her voice to be the impact that it is today. Oddly enough, she is simultaneously bouncing back from a brief hiatus that put her songwriting on pause. Through reflection and other creative writing, she has been able to traverse through this time and find herself on the other end a more prepared and refined artist. We learned how you can still develop your artistic career without being in the thick of it and how a setback is only a setback if you let it become one. Otherwise, it’s a small launching pad for you to leap off of into bigger worlds. This absolutely rings true in this case. As we are witnessing a rebirth that is set to catapult her into the next realm of musicianship. Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you.. AB GONZALEZ | Episode 009 | Live! at MFHQ
More Wednesdays, more GOOD conversation. This time around, Episode 009, we brought in an absolute EP LEGEND in the media production game. This one resonates big time, as Emmeff Pearl is also an organization centered around music, film, and photography. However, getting to listen in from one of the head producers out of the powerhouse LFDC Studios was an opportunity to learn all about the world that we ourselves are steadily getting deeper within. The vast spectrum of projects that he has produced and created content for are a testament to the time he has taken to sharpening his sword and strengthening his technical ability behind the camera. All stemming from a simple little curiosity (all thanks to Mid-2010's sneaker culture), his career has blossomed into an endless stream of creativity and possibility, and has become a blueprint for what a Sun City Content Creator can become. From block parties in the 915 to grand openings in Vegas to national campaigns all back to dope indie projects with the homies. All around, taking over the world... LIVE FROM DA CORNER.. A. BILLI FREE | Episode 008 | Live! at MFHQ
You see Wednesday on your calendar, and you know what the drill is.. another episode of LIVE! at MFHQ! — This time around, we invited over a good friend of ours whom we met way way back through one of our earliest seasons of Midnight! The LEGEND herself, A. BILLI FREE. Representing the Southwest by way of the Midwest, Billi has discovered and built a unique sound that blends her earliest influences of young adulthood in Chicago with her ever growing endeavors of the border as a veteran within the music space. Naturally, her journey through music has evolved. Supernaturally, her mission within music has superseded it’s foundation and has become driven by community as she has been able to use her experience to help universally exchange hip-hop and culture across the world through her recent years. A career such as this doesn’t happen overnight, so we’ve always been curious to know just how she manages to accomplish so much in what seems like no time at all! Luckily, A. Billi was kind enough to sit and share with us some of the first things she learned as a musician, how she manages to continue to expand her entire portfolio while remaining in control of her work, and what it takes to be so connected with the world as a musician in today’s day and age. It was an honor to be able to have this convo, and we’re even more grateful to have the opportunity to share it with you all. Sit back, enjoy some fresh water, maybe some tea… and listen to some GOOD CONVERSATION with A. BILLI FREE.Keep up with A. JOVY CASTILLO | Episode 007 | Live! at MFHQ
Oh would you look at that.... it's WEDNESDAY, gang. That means we're sitting down with, you guessed it, ANOTHER LEGEND. This time around, we had a very special friend of ours come through to the studio to discuss her journey thus far, Jovy Castillo! Through the last 10 years, and even further back, depending on how you like to look at it, Jovy has carver her lane from scratch within the health and wellness space of El Paso, Texas. Finding her love for fitness early on, she quickly received opportunities to help others on their road to a healthier life. Of course, over that span, we all would face challenges, successes and everything in between, and Jovy is no different. However, through those peaks and valleys of her career, she has found herself receiving her Bachelor's in Kinesiology and Performance Psychology, launching her very own fitness apparel line, and even providing the Sun City with free bootcamps to kickstart your fitness all across town. By no means was it easy, and Jovy is quick to be honest about it. We can't appreciate her enough for coming through and sharing insight within her career and passion of health and wellness. Sit back, or get to stretching, and take this new episode of Live! at MFHQ in. To stay up to date with all of Jovy's announcements, you can find her on instagram @jovy_castillofit.Chapters:0:00 - Introductions4:04 - Finding the Love for Fitness and Training10:48 - The Evolution of Jovy's Coaching Style14:44 - Making a Workout Program18:30 - One Degree Hotter!29:30 - How to NOT Diet...40:03 - Elev847:21 - Gym Myth Busters54:05 - Peach Builders & The Endless Pursuit of DreamsLive! at MFHQ is a conversation-driven podcast hosted by the Emmeff Pearl team. RUN FOR IT | Episode 006 | Live! at MFHQ
Inspiration can become your friend, and a friend can become inspiration. In the case of my relationship with this next guest, it is both. RUN FOR IT, our sixth guest of the pod, came thru to the HQ so we can finally sit down with the homies and explore the makings of their Social Run Club that's based in the 9-1-5. As is the case for almost all of our guests, their mission and project(s) stem from a core love of what it is that they do. RUN FOR IT is no different. Thomas & Freddy, RUN FOR IT's founders, live what they preach and serve as motivation for us all to get up and run after OUR "it". We dive into what gets them to run, AND what keeps them running, the culture of El Paso running, conspiracies, and so much more. We keep saying THIS ONE'S A BANGER... and that remains the same. SULTANES DEL YONKE | Episode 005 | Live! at MFHQ
Live! at MFHQ was created so that we can hear even more from our favorite emerging artists beyond the music. The idea obviously grew beyond that, but we didn’t forget the core idea. With our seventh season of Midnight underway, it was time to sit down with one of our guest artists from our flagship series. For this fifth episode of our podcast, we sat with SULTANES DEL YONKE, who for the last couple of years, have been building their unique flavor known as “El Ultrasonido Fronterizo”. Or… the ultrasound of the border. Their charismatic personalities blend together perfectly and we are taken through stories, jokes, and lessons that they’ve experienced through their time as a group. Listen, as we discuss how they overcome any creative differences as a group, their thoughts on the music scene in El Paso, and how we can all help improve the status quo of being a performer in El Paso. GUS DELGADO | Episode 004 | Live! at MFHQ
Wednesdays! You know what time it is! LEGENDS ONLY. Our guest this week has not only been a huge help in what we're trying to accomplish here at Emmeff, but has also been an important contribution to the rise and growth of South Central. Gus, the co-owner of Old Sheepdog Brewery, came through to the HQ to talk about his brew oasis that he has built alongside his wife, Brisa, over the last four years. From collaborating with visual artists to celebrating the barrios of our border city, Old Sheepdog Brewery wears its roots on its sleeve, and thanks to the pod, we were able to learn about everything that goes into that process. Including what came BEFORE Old Sheepdog! Sit back, crack open a cold one... it's 5pm somewhere... and enjoy another banger episode of Live! at MFHQ. You can find Old Sheepdog in the heart of El Paso, at 3900 Rosa Ave. Right next to the iconic Lincoln Park. There, you will find great art, great food, and even GREATER beer. Keep up with all of their new events, beers, and other things going on through their social medias - @oldsheepdogbrewery anywhere you check!Live! at MFHQ is a conversation-driven podcast hosted by the Emmeff Pearl team.
