Our Editor's Take

The Planetary Radio: Space Exploration, Astronomy and Science podcast ventures into the world of space. Scientists, astronauts, and academics join together to discuss the exploration of the universe.

The podcast is run by The Planetary Society, a non-profit organization founded in 1980. Its creators are scientists Carl Sagan and Bruce Murray and engineer Louis Friedman. As budgets for exploration reduced, they knew they needed to help. They created the society to unite a passion for the cosmos beyond Earth and the Solar System. It does everything from delivering petitions to Congress to working on asteroid defense.

The host of this weekly podcast is producer Sarah Al-Ahmed. Fascinated by astronomy as a child, she decided to study astrophysics at university. Each episode shares discussions and debates on all aspects of space. What are subsurface oceans, and how might they help to sustain life on other planets? Has a new algorithm detected a hazardous asteroid? Is there a potential for microbial life on the red planet? There are also "Space Policy Edition" episodes. These are hosted by the society's subject expert, Casey Dreier. These episodes investigate budget impacts and government news.

One podcast episode explores "The slow evolution of Europa." Europa is Jupiter's moon, an intriguing location within the Solar System. Arizona State University's Kevin Trinh joins to discuss his research. He talks about his interest in the formation of Europa and its conditions compared to Earth. He also reveals that Earth is about 100 times the size of Europa, to put it into perspective.

Another podcast episode is "JWST detects water vapor in a planet-forming disk." It reveals new data from the James Webb Space Telescope. Researchers from an astronomy institute in Germany join to discuss the discovery. How does it shape the current understanding of the formation of the Earth? What research is now required to find more answers?

Planetary Radio: Space Exploration, Astronomy and Science shares news on space exploration. From space programs to research papers, experts discuss the latest discoveries. Sarah's colleagues, including Bill Nye "The Science Guy" and Bruce Betts, also join. New episodes air weekly.
