Our Editor's Take

Boomer & Gio is the podcast form of the popular radio show of the same name. The NYC-based sports and pop culture program airs on radio station WFAN each morning. This is the podcast version of the show. The hosts discuss the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL with a New York-centric focus. The show combines high-energy commentary and analysis with listener call-ins and other segments.

The hosts of Boomer & Gio are Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti. Long-time sports fans will have some familiarity with these names. Both have been a part of the professional sports realm for several years. Listeners can catch up with these sports legends via their podcast.

Boomer is a former quarterback who spent most of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals. In 1989, he led the team to an appearance at Super Bowl XXIII. He retired from football in 1997, after he played thirteen years in the league. Gregg, nicknamed Gio, has been a commentator and on-air radio personality since 2008. In 2010, he began working with CBS and in 2013, he moved into a position with CBS Sports. He has been cohosting the podcast with Boomer since 2018. Prior to that, the show was called Boomer & Carton when Craig Carton cohosted.

The differences between the hosts' personalities help keep this podcast exciting. Boomer is calm and reserved, while Gio is honest about his emotions. He is open to speaking about things outside of sports or pop culture. In March 2023, Gio spoke about his struggles with anxiety on air.

Boomer & Gio is not a team-specific sports podcast. Rather, it offers an overview of daily sports and pop culture stories in the news. When a pop culture story is a part of the program, it always connects to sports in some fashion. Each hour of the four-hour radio program is a separate episode of the podcast. This allows listeners to find the specific element of the show that they want to hear quickly. The podcast also has specific segments in the feed.

New episodes of Boomer & Gio air daily from Monday to Friday.

Boomer & Gio Podcast (WHOLE SHOW)
Hour 1 The NFL released their full schedules yesterday so we went over the Jets and Giants to start things off. The Jets have a rough start in San Francisco to start, then on the road again in Tennessee and then a quick turnaround for a home game Thursday night against the Patriots. Netflix did get the Christmas games as Boomer first reported, but who will be producing the games? Might be CBS or Fox or NBC. Jerry is here for his first update of the day but first Gio has some golf bets for you. Aaron Judge hit a HR and had three doubles as the Yankees beat the Twins. The Mets lost again to the Phillies. Angels manager Ron Washington threw Luis Guillorme under the bus for a suicide squeeze that didn’t work out. The Rangers will try to close it out tonight in Carolina. In the final segment of the hour, a caller wonders when the Mets will start trading players and who will go.  Hour 2 The Mets season is not going well. They are in a strange spot right now where their big players are not coming through. Boomer said they have to trade those players if it continues to go this way. Astros pitcher Ronel Blanco was tossed for having sticky stuff on his glove. Doug Gottlieb is the new head basketball coach at Wisconsin Green Bay. In the final segment of the hour, Gio thinks Friday night in Indiana will come down to the final 3 minutes.  Hour 2 Can you think of anything better than spending your Friday night watching the Knicks? Boomer said there were years when the Knicks were unwatchable. A caller thinks John Starks is way too involved emotionally in these games. Another caller is excited for the Knicks future as they’re not in ‘salary cap hell’. Jerry returns for an update but first we talked about Kickoff To Summer which is a week from Friday. Jerry has all the sounds from last night’s Knicks domination of the Pacers. Aaron Rodgers was on with Tucker Carlson and talked about Trump, Biden and RFK Jr. He also talked about Carlson’s interview with Putin. They also talked about vaccines and Jeffrey Epstein. Tom Brady was on the Pivot Podcast. He loved the roast jokes about him, but didn’t like the way it affected his kids. Doug Gottlieb is going to be the head coach at Wisconsin Green Bay and he’s still going to do his radio show. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about the live portal in NYC that lets you look live in Dublin, and Dublin can see us here on the streets of NY. The portal had to be shut down because there had been too much nudity on there. It’s mainly an issue on the Dublin side.  Hour 4 The Knicks are still dealing with injuries but Jalen Brunson was back to his old self dropping over 40 points again in the playoffs. Gio is not as confident as he was against the Sixers, but now that Brunson is back he will put them away in game 6. A caller wants to know if we have a tip for the Preakness.
