Our Editor's Take

Boomer & Gio is the podcast form of the popular radio show of the same name. The NYC-based sports and pop culture program airs on radio station WFAN each morning. This is the podcast version of the show. The hosts discuss the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL with a New York-centric focus. The show combines high-energy commentary and analysis with listener call-ins and other segments.

The hosts of Boomer & Gio are Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti. Long-time sports fans will have some familiarity with these names. Both have been a part of the professional sports realm for several years. Listeners can catch up with these sports legends via their podcast.

Boomer is a former quarterback who spent most of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals. In 1989, he led the team to an appearance at Super Bowl XXIII. He retired from football in 1997, after he played thirteen years in the league. Gregg, nicknamed Gio, has been a commentator and on-air radio personality since 2008. In 2010, he began working with CBS and in 2013, he moved into a position with CBS Sports. He has been cohosting the podcast with Boomer since 2018. Prior to that, the show was called Boomer & Carton when Craig Carton cohosted.

The differences between the hosts' personalities help keep this podcast exciting. Boomer is calm and reserved, while Gio is honest about his emotions. He is open to speaking about things outside of sports or pop culture. In March 2023, Gio spoke about his struggles with anxiety on air.

Boomer & Gio is not a team-specific sports podcast. Rather, it offers an overview of daily sports and pop culture stories in the news. When a pop culture story is a part of the program, it always connects to sports in some fashion. Each hour of the four-hour radio program is a separate episode of the podcast. This allows listeners to find the specific element of the show that they want to hear quickly. The podcast also has specific segments in the feed.

New episodes of Boomer & Gio air daily from Monday to Friday.

Boomer & Gio Podcast (WHOLE SHOW)
Hour 1 We’re used to Feel Good Fridays around here but today is a Feel Good Monday with the Rangers advancing, the Knicks taking a 3-1 series lead and the Mets and Yankees both winning on Sunday. Jalen Brunson and Boomer’s guy Precious Achiuwa were big factors in the Knicks win. Tom Thibodeau has pushed all the right buttons in this series and proven all the doubters wrong. Gio says Joel Embiid is like a boxer who knows he is about to get knocked out so he starts to fight dirty. Embiid’s reputation has taken a tremendous hit in this series. Boomer is happy and giddy today. Boomer says Jalen Brunson’s game 4 was a top 5 Knicks playoff performance of all-time. Boomer expects a big change for the Rangers if they play the Hurricanes in the second round. CLo is in for Jerry today and is here for his first update. The Knicks took a 3-1 lead in Philly with plenty of Knicks fans in the building and the style of play reminded Boomer and Gio of the 90s. Boomer says Brunson also reminds him of Walt “Clyde” Frazier. The Knicks finally have “the guy” in Jalen Brunson and nobody saw that coming. Gio says Joel Embiid is a losing player and Boomer says he is closer to a whiner than a winner. Boomer isn’t  happy about a tweet from WIP. Artemi Panarin’s PP goal was the winner as the Rangers swept the Capitals. In the final segment of the hour, Gio shares how he was a guest bartender during the Knicks game and the crowd was awesome while Boomer discusses final preparations for the bike race this Sunday. Hour 2 Gio asks Boomer if he’d rather see the Hurricanes have a long series against the Islanders or win game 5 and have a similar amount of time off as the Rangers. Boomer points out that the favorites are dominating in the Eastern Conference playoffs as the Islanders will try to buck that trend. Boomer and Gio can’t wait to see how the Garden crowd treats Embiid tomorrow. Nick Nurse, Joel Embiid and the Sixers have classic loser’s mentality. This is a throwback series because of how much these teams dislike each other. Gio says Richard Jefferson is a clear Knicks hater on the broadcast but Boomer isn’t so sure. CLo returns for an update and starts with Jalen Brunson giving credit to his teammates defense rather than his offense in Sunday’s win. Brunson has Boomer so excited he’s thinking about Mark Messier. Kevin Durant and the Suns got swept. The Rangers are onto round 2. Would Boomer go to an Islanders playoff game? Mark Vientos walked it off for the Mets. In the final segment of the hour, the guys discuss how Knicks and Rangers fans traveled well in the first round. Hour 3 Daniel Jones will be the Giants starter this season. Gio says he’s prepared for the situation because of the uncertainty he dealt with before proving himself in 2022. Boomer and Gio agree that the Giants will need a little more leadership from Jones this season. They could end up in QB no-man’s land after this year. CLo returns for an update but first we hear from a caller who admits to Boomer he was wrong last week. Jalen Brunson commented on the crowd and Tom Thibodeau got back on track after almost sounding like he was taking a victory lap too early. Mark Vientos walked-it off for the Mets. The Yankees scored 15 runs for the second game in a row and Aaron Judge homered in both games. In the final segment of the hour, we wonder if Daniel Jones can win comeback player of the year this NFL season. The Rangers have what it takes to win. Hour 4 It’s natural for Knicks and Rangers fans to think ahead right now. The Bucks are dealing with injuries so it looks like the Pacers will advance. Boomer expects to see Filip Chytil back for the Rangers in the second round. We get more details of how Knicks fans took over Philly but did they cross a line? Boomer has some big show announcements. He has extended his contract with Audacy, our agreement with CBS Sports Network has been extended and Boomer has stepped away from The NFL Today. Boomer thanks all of the people he worked with over the years. CLo returns for his final update of the morning and starts with the Knicks fans getting very loud when Joel Embiid missed a big free throw late in the game. Gio is a big fan of Anthony Edwards and sees shades of Michael Jordan in Ant-Man’s game. Colts GM Chris Ballard ranted about sources who anonymously rip the character of players in the pre-draft process. New Giants QB likes to refer to himself in the third person. Chris “Mad Dog” Russo had trouble pronouncing Rome Odunze. The Moment of The Day involves Gio comparing CBS Sports Radio’s Andrew Perloff to something you would see outside of a car dealership. In the final segment of the show, Boomer and Gio discuss the awkward situation they just experienced with a visitor during the break.

Boomer & Gio Podcast (WHOLE SHOW)
Hour 1 Gio’s Minnesota Vikings took JJ McCarthy, a guy Gio doesn’t think will make it in the NFL. Boomer loved Bill Belichick’s appearance on Pat McAfee in regards to the draft. Boomer likes the Giants picking WR Malik Nabers. Boomer also thinks Daniel Jones was a big winner last night with the Giants not picking a quarterback. Kirk Cousins is supposedly angry with the Falcons taking Michael Penix instead of a player to help his offense this season. Gio thinks it’s time for him to stop being a Vikings fan. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the sounds of last night’s Knicks loss in Philly. Joel Embiid scored 50, but could have been thrown out for his flagrant foul on Mitchell Robinson. Bill Belichick seems to like Malik Nabers. Aaron Rodgers talked about the Jets pick, Olu Fashanu. In the final segment of the hour, Gio went to the Islanders last night and ran into Julie Stewart-Binks. He remembers her crapping on the Islanders in the past and there she was in an Islanders jersey in the owner’s box last night. He also ran into Stu Feiner from Barstool.  Hour 2 Boomer did not like that Joel Embiid was not given a flagrant 2 when he pulled down Mitchell Robinson. Gio doesn’t think the Sixers will win another game in the series. Can Embiid keep up his 50 point performance? Gio said Knicks in five. He said the Sixers are babies, dirty and wuss bags. We also talked about Boomer & Gio live next Friday in Jersey City. We’re worried Boomer will get physical with Spike Eskin because of the Sixers and Spike recently had a hip replacement. Jerry returns for an update and starts with Malik Nabers talking about being picked by the Giants. Rob Saleh talked about drafting Olu Fashanu. The Knicks lost in Philly and Jerry has all of the postgame sound. Jalen Brunson scored 39 in the Knicks loss. In the final segment of the hour, a caller said Mitchell Robinson needs to pull a Willis Reed after his injury. A caller wants Joel Embiid suspended for his flagrant foul.  Hour 3 If Aaron Rodgers is healthy, they should be the best team in the AFC East. Boomer loved watching Bill Belichick with Pat McAfee last night. He loves Malik Nabers. But what if the Giants don’t win this year? They passed on another quarterback in the draft and Bill Belichick will be available to be the head coach. Where can we expect the Giants to fall in the NFC East? Gio said third. Jerry returns for an update and starts with how huge the crowd was for the draft in Detroit. The Falcons drafted Michael Penix for the future, even though they got Kirk Cousins in the offseason. Boomer said it makes complete sense to him. In the final segment of the hour, we get game three of Rangers/Capitals tonight. Gio said the Capitals are dead. A caller said Sal took a shot at Boomer at the end of yesterday’s show.  Hour 4 Boomer is getting more annoyed at Joel Embiid the more video he sees of him on the court. Embiid crossed the line but he knew they weren’t throwing him out of a playoff game at home. Gio said there is no way he’s getting away with that in game four. Jerry returns for his final update of the morning and starts with the Knicks losing in Philly last night. Embiid played dirty and poured in 50 points. Malik Nabers is going to come in and ‘be a dog’ for the Giants. The Falcons drafted Michael Penix even though they have Kirk Cousins and Boomer thinks it was a smart move. JD Martinez is finally going to be in the lineup tonight. The Islanders are now in a 3-0 hole after losing again last night. The Moment of The Day involves Gio not being thrilled with the Vikings drafting JJ McCarthy. A caller said he’s getting married and Gio gives him a piece of advice.
