Bob Edwards and Content Contributor Davis Jackson talk about Bloody Sunday which refers to a pivotal event in the American Civil Rights Movement that occurred on March 7, 1965, in Selma, Alabama. It was a peaceful march led by civil rights activists, including John Lewis and Hosea Williams, to demand voting rights for African Americans. The protesters intended to march from Selma to Montgomery, the state capital.However, as they attempted to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge, they were met with brutal violence from state troopers and local law enforcement. The officers attacked the unarmed marchers with tear gas, batons, and mounted officers, resulting in numerous injuries among the demonstrators, some severely beaten.The violent repression of the peaceful protest garnered widespread national and international attention, shocking many Americans and galvanizing support for the Civil Rights Movement. The event led to increased pressure on the federal government to protect the rights of African Americans and ultimately contributed to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibited racial discrimination in voting practices.Support the Show.

Bob Edwards talks about the origin and legacy of the Black Panther Party in Black American history.The Black Panther Party was founded in 1966 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, California, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. The party emerged as a response to police brutality and systemic racism experienced by African Americans, particularly in urban areas.Inspired by the teachings of Malcolm X and influenced by Marxist ideology, the BPP sought to address issues such as police violence, poverty, and inequality through direct action and community organizing. The party's symbol, the black panther, embodied strength, and resistance against oppression.One of the BPP's most iconic programs was the "Free Breakfast for Children" initiative, which provided meals to underprivileged youth in urban areas. Additionally, the party established community clinics and offered legal aid to those facing discrimination or harassment.The Black Panther Party’s confrontational stance towards law enforcement, often carrying firearms openly, led to clashes with authorities and garnered widespread attention. The party's ten-point program outlined its demands for social, economic, and political equality, calling for an end to police brutality, decent housing, education, and employment opportunities for African Americans.However, internal divisions, government infiltration, and external pressure led to the decline of the BPP by the late 1970s. A federal judge has approved Georgia’s newly-revised political maps for Congress and the state legislature, a win for Republicans who sought to preserve their partisan advantage while adding new majority-Black districts required by the court.“The Court finds that the General Assembly fully complied with this Court’s order,” U.S. District Judge Steve Jones wrote in a Thursday ruling.The court’s decision to approve the new Republican-drawn maps comes over the objections of the civil rights and religious groups who first sued over Georgia’s maps. They argued that the revised district lines continue to illegally dilute the power of Black voters in violation of the Voting Rights Act.Support the Show.

Black college athletes NIL deals are being threated to be eliminated or diminished by the latest  goverment bill called The PASS Act, which was written  in October 2023 by Democrat Senator Joe Manchin and Republican  SenatorTommy Tuberville.The Bill wpould make it illegal for states to pass laws that would permit college athletes to share revenue with schools and athletic conferences that generate billions of dollars from sports like football and basketball.Support the Show.

The Willie Lynch letter: The Making of a Slave.This speech was purportedly delivered by Willie Lynch on the bank of the James River in the colony of Virginia in 1712. Lynch was a British slave owner in the West Indies. He was invited to the colony of Virginia in 1712 to teach his methods to slave owners there. The Supreme Court ruled that Alabama discriminated against Black voters when it drew its seven congressional districts last year.The ruling against Alabama in the case Allen v. Milligan means the state will have to redraw its congressional map to accommodate Black voters by including a second majority-Black district for next year’s elections. The case stemmed from challenges to Alabama’s seven-district congressional map, which included one district in which Black voters formed a large enough majority that they have the power to elect their preferred candidate. The challengers said that one district is not enough to represent them, pointing out that Alabama’s population is approximately 27% Black.In a 5-4 decision, Chief Justice John Roberts joined Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, Jackson, and Kavanaugh in delivering the opinion, which said that a lower court had correctly concluded that the map drawn for the 2022 congressional elections violated Section 2 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.Support the Show.
