11.1.2024 -- NLS -- From Garbage to Greatness: Biden, Cuban, and Trump’s Unexpected Boost
Send us a textOn this episode with Neal and Julie, they dive into a whirlwind of current political topics, starting with recent controversies over remarks by Joe Biden and Mark Cuban, which have stirred tensions among Trump supporters. Neal and Julie discuss how Biden’s recent comments labeling some Americans as “garbage” and Cuban’s criticism of Trump supporters have sparked significant backlash, questioning whether these statements could have unintended consequences in Trump’s favor. As the conversation unfolds, they explore Trump’s continued popularity, particularly with groups that have traditionally been challenging for him to secure, such as young voters and women. Neal and Julie also touch on Trump’s high-profile interview with Joe Rogan, which they argue has played a significant role in bolstering his reach. This momentum, combined with increased traction among first-time or lapsed voters, makes them optimistic about Trump’s potential performance in upcoming elections, despite divisive issues. The discussion then pivots to Idaho’s Prop 1 and the implications of out-of-state money and ranked-choice voting, which Neal and Julie warn could dilute voters' influence and create unintended complexities in election outcomes. They explain ranked-choice voting’s impact on election dynamics, where the removal of lower-ranked candidates might result in votes shifting to candidates that some voters may not fully support. They share how these changes might force people into ranking candidates they oppose to avoid their votes being exhausted—a point many listeners struggle with.To round things out, Neal and Julie emphasize a call for states to retain more autonomy over federal decisions. This reflects a larger trend they see toward empowering local voices and diminishing federal overreach. The hosts field listener reactions, noting the difficulties of engaging in civil discourse over such polarizing issues but appreciating the support and curiosity of their audience, especially around these complex topics.

10.28.2024 -- NLS -- The Ranked Choice Riddle: Alaska's Vote and Prop One's Price
Send us a textOn this episode with Neal and Julie, they dive deep into the complex world of ranked choice voting and the implications of Proposition One, a topic stirring considerable debate. Neal opens up about his initial concerns over Prop One, noting the financial pressures it may impose and how opinions could sway based on available information, especially in close races. They discuss the impact of ranked choice voting, drawing insights from Speaker Tilton from Alaska, who shares Alaska's experience with the system. She recounts how ranked choice voting, despite efforts to educate the public, has led to some voter confusion and, at times, lower participation. Speaker Tilton also explains the substantial financial backing the system received in Alaska, funded by significant outside contributions, which she argues contrasts with the goal of reducing "dark money" in politics.Neal and Julie explore the risks and confusion voters may face in a ranked choice setup and debate whether it truly serves the democratic process. They highlight instances where voters may end up unintentionally marking ballots incorrectly or casting votes for candidates they didn’t intend to support. Neal expresses skepticism, suggesting that ranked choice voting could obscure the will of the people, giving those who control the count too much influence over outcomes. As the discussion closes, Neal and Julie encourage listeners to think critically about ranked choice voting, its potential to reshape elections, and the importance of understanding the system's implications before casting a vote.

10.24.2024 -- NLS -- "The Ranked Choice Voting Trap: A Recipe for Election Chaos?"
Send us a textOn this episode with Neal and Julie, they delve into the complex topic of ranked choice voting (RCV), focusing on its potential impact on elections. Neal discusses a viral social media post that uses a food analogy to explain the process, but he quickly shifts the conversation to the fundamental flaws he sees in RCV. He argues that traditional voting methods, such as the boarda method, more accurately reflect voter preferences without distorting the results.Julie adds that the goal of RCV proponents, particularly in the context of Prop 1, is to sway elections in favor of liberal candidates who might not succeed in a binary system. Neal expresses concern that RCV complicates the process unnecessarily, making it harder for voters to understand and making it more difficult for candidates to clearly distinguish themselves. Julie then compares the system to professional sports teams, noting how it would be absurd for fans of one team to select players for their rivals—a metaphor illustrating how RCV takes control away from voters. They discuss the importance of giving candidates a period to campaign against a single opponent, which RCV undermines by forcing voters to juggle multiple choices. The conversation also touches on the broader implications of RCV for both local and national elections, including the possibility of civil unrest depending on the outcomes. Neal emphasizes the need for traditional voting methods to avoid such complications and to ensure the electorate’s voice is truly heard. Finally, Neal and Julie urge listeners to remain engaged, suggesting that getting people out to vote on Election Day is far more powerful than simply placing a sign in your yard.

10.15.2024 -- NLS -- Exposing the Deception Behind Idaho’s Proposition One and Trump’s Lead in Key States
Send us a textOn this episode of the Neal Larson Show, Neal and Julie discuss Idaho's Proposition One, voicing strong concerns about its potential impact on the state's election process. They argue that the proposition’s supporters are using misleading tactics to sell the idea, emphasizing that if passed, it could strip political parties of their ability to nominate candidates and allow candidates to falsely claim any party affiliation on the ballot. Neal and Julie stress that this change could significantly alter the integrity of Idaho’s elections, urging listeners to engage with their communities and spread the word. The duo also touches on the broader political landscape, diving into the latest polling data that shows Donald Trump leading in several key swing states. They reflect on how polling often underestimates Trump’s performance and question the media's portrayal of the 2024 presidential race. Additionally, Neal and Julie share their frustrations with how the media covers political controversies, such as Kamala Harris's plagiarism scandal and selective reporting on issues like immigration and election integrity. As the show progresses, Neal and Julie encourage Idaho voters to stay informed and active, especially with only three weeks until the election. They also announce plans for a rally and sign distribution to encourage a "No" vote on Proposition One, calling for citizens to advocate for the truth and protect Idaho’s election system.
