Our Editor's Take

The podcast Gangland Wire provides a unique perspective on true crime. Most hosts in this genre are either journalists or enthusiasts. The creator of this show has dedicated his life to fighting the crimes he discusses. Gary Jenkins is a retired intelligence detective. He has decades of experience investigating Mafia-related crimes. Now that he's out of the business, Jenkins is happy to share all he learned about organized crime.

The podcast host started his career in law enforcement in 1971 as a police officer in Kansas City. His rise through the ranks was quick. By 1976, he was already a detective in the organized crime division. By the 1980s, Jenkins' work helped convict some of the most prolific gangsters in the KC area. His collaboration with the FBI and evidence gathering led to charges of racketeering, extortion, and murder. By 1998, the detective decided it was time to retire. That didn't mean he became tired of the law. It was quite the opposite. Jenkins went on to become a lawyer with his own practice. In the following years, he wrote multiple books about the Mafia and consulted on the topic. He also produced several documentaries, including Brothers against Brothers: The Civella-Spero War.

On Gangland Wire, Jenkins often shares stories from his time in Kansas City. He uncovers the criminals' lifestyles, management attitudes, and courses of action. With the help of detectives from other cities, he also learns about other mob organizations. The podcast details notable criminals from Al Capone to John Gotti. Jenkins interviews prosecutors, academics, and FBI agents. On some exciting episodes, the host even talks to former Mafia members.

Gangland Wire is a true treat for true crime enthusiasts. There are no embellishments or theories here. It's all real-life experiences and hard facts. New episodes air twice a week.
