In the second part of her conversation with Clive, Earth healer and retreat founder Sabine Engelhardt describes how going off grid involves getting away from romantic ideas about nature. While there's great value just being with nature, we need to get our hands dirty for our intuition to be fully reawakened. Sabine shares her fear that humanity is ill-prepared humanity for changes that are approaching, and calls for a return to simpler ways of living and honing our practical skills to face up to this. While we can’t predict timeframes for this change, we reflect on some wake-up calls that suggest that it may come much sooner than many may anticipate, and bring about a need for a radical resetting of the collective consciousness and grounding ourselves. Yet, in the spirit of free will intention, we may have considerable leeway in determining the nature of this new existence. We can energetically hold and channel the qualities we wish to see in the societies that emerge. In this special episode, as we approach the end of World Immunisation Week, we take a special look at how the world is performing in terms of vaccinating its people. This month also marks the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), which was created by the World Health Assembly with the aim of vaccinating all children against diphtheria, measles, pertussis, polio, tetanus, tuberculosis, and smallpox, the only human disease ever eradicated. This week Ellen talks to Zen teacher Brother Dave Kenneally, aka the Marine Monk, whose practice and study as an ordinand in the tradition of the late Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s Order of Interbeing spans more than twenty years. Brother Dave and Ellen talk about how to respond to hearing bad news in a mindful way, the exhaustion of near constant exposure to news that many of us experience in the modern world, and the importance of directing energy  inward as well as outwardly looking for solutions to problems.  How can we stay in touch with our deepest intentions? How can we truly care for ourselves as well as for others? How can we become more aware of a false sense of urgency? How can we be kept beware of being incoherent when we merely react to hearing a story in the news? How can we reverse the tendency to be more outward than inward focused in our attention, and in turn, show up more powerfully in the world? In this special episode, as Global Healing Response moves its attention from water to Earth and as Earth Day approaches, we take a look at our vital dependency on and responsibility for caring for the element called earth – the hard, solid constituent of our planet that includes rocks, the soil, sands, and the great, shifting tectonic plates that move imperceptibly below our feet.  Earth includes all the minerals we use to build our homes and create the things that we consider necessary for our lives. It includes sources of fuel such as coal. We might extend our definition to include products that start as solids, but have been made into gas, oil, and the myriad chemicals that are the building blocks for life. When we think about the Earth, we might think about standing on firm ground, having a place where we can root ourselves, and most critically of all, the place we call home.  Climate change and the effects of plastic pollution are key topics in our conversation. Earth Day, a global initiative intended to motivate conservation of our planet, this year stresses the dire need for significant reduction of plastic production. Research findings from Curtin University serve as the groundwork of our reflection on the damage extreme heat and drought inflict on Australia's soil and its potential failure to achieve COP climate objectives. We also emphasize the notable link between global peace and soil health, brought to public attention by U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken at the World Economic Forum conference in Davos earlier this year. We explore the surprising statistics of sand exploitation and ponder the dilemmas plaguing renewable energy production. This thought-provoking episode sheds light on humanity's often detrimental impact on the planet and the importance of mindfulness towards our actions and their environmental repercussions. In this special deep dive, we take a look at the rise in xenophobia against Tajik nationals living in Russia following the attack on the Crocus City Hall in Moscow last month. We explore the reasons why Tajiks have been linked with the jihadist group ISIS-K, and the prevalence of discrimination against ethnic groups in Russia both before and after the concert hall attack. As this year’s World Labyrinth Day approaches, Ellen catches up with Carmel Stabley, Vice President of Community and Regional Representative Co-ordinator for The Labyrinth Society. Carmel gives a fascinating outline of the history and purpose of this annual event and focus for global intention holding, including a 24-hour marathon that took place at the time the COVID lockdown kept most of us holed up at home, and shares the beautiful intention behind the invitation on this day to “walk as one at one” all around the world while holding an intention for peace.
