His company produced Salvadorian Salvation, a documentary about protecting El Salvador’s children from gang violence. Dr. Vicky Guzman, founder and director of Asaprosar, an organization that helps the neediest families of that country, worked with her daughter Lucy Guzman and a team of social workers, psychologists, and educators, providing a refuge for children, including a balanced meal every day. After two years of fundraising and planning, HRN is thrilled to unveil a new visual identity and website. To share some behind-the-scenes insight into the redesign process HRN’s Executive Director Caity Moseman Wadler and Communications’s Director Kat Johnson sat down with the iconic Pentagram designers behind our new look. Paula Scher is one of the most influential graphic designers in the world and her images have entered into the American vernacular. Scher has been a partner in the New York office of Pentagram since 1991. She began her career as an art director in the 1970s and early 80s, when her eclectic approach to typography became highly influential. During the course of her career Scher has been the recipient of hundreds of industry honors and awards, including the profession’s highest honor, the AIGA Medal.Jeff Close is a graphic designer from Toronto. He has designed for clients such as The New School, The Library of Congress, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and many more. His work has been recognized by D&AD, TDC, AIGA, Tokyo TDC, SEGD, Fast Company, CommArts, PRINT, among others. In 2012, he started the design podcast Listen Close and, in 2019, he founded and launched Crust Magazine, an online magazine that recognizes the collective meanings of our relationships and individual stories with food.Celebrate HRN’s new look and invest in the future of food radio. Meet South Carolina's Chef Ambassadors, Part Two

Meet Kevin Mitchell and Jamie Daskalis, of Charleston and Myrtle Beach, respectively. They discuss the people, culture, ingredients, and relationships that make South Carolina’s food scene so dynamic. As restaurants and tourism begin to pick back up, they share insights on an industry in recovery and share some timely advice for people looking to plan their next trip to South Carolina’s coast. Chef Kevin Mitchell is one of those rare culinarians whose professional interests far exceed the confines of the kitchen. He truly is a “chef scholar,” with two degrees from the Culinary Institute of America. Mitchell is the first African American Chef Instructor at the Culinary Institute of Charleston, and his work prioritizes the preservation of Southern ingredients and supporting South Carolina’s community of chefs.Chef Jamie Daskalis grew up in restaurants – her father owned and operated four restaurants in New York. Today, she is the brainchild behind the wildly popular Johnny D’s Waffles and Bakery. Daskalis is also passionate about serving her community. Meet Raffaele Dall’Erta and Jason Tufts, of Sumter and Aiken, respectively. They discuss the people, culture, ingredients, and relationships that make South Carolina’s food scene so dynamic. Both Raffaele and Jason have used their talents as chefs to build fine dining destinations in small towns.Born in Milan, Raffaele Dall’Erta struck out on his career path at the tender age of 15, attending culinary school at Vallesana in Northern Lombardy. The rich traditions of family, food, and Italian culture are the foundation of his culinary ethos. He has worked in esteemed kitchens like The Far Duck in the UK and Per Se in New York. After an 11-year turn as sous chef at the Inn at Little Washington, he landed at Hamptons in Sumter in 2010.Chef Jason Tufts can thank his mama for his culinary career. As a high school student, he took a job washing dishes for a downtown Aiken restaurant, which gave him an inside look at the behind-the-scenes dynamics of a chef’s life. He honed his skills at the Doctors Hospital of Augusta, the Green Boundary Club, and the Woodside Plantation Country Club, both in Aiken. On this episode of HRN Happy Hour we're thrilled to present the first episode of one of HRN's newest shows: Fields.  Fields brings you the stories of people who are working in urban agriculture—for money, for fun, to feed the hungry, and for entirely other reasons. In each episode, hosts Melissa Metrick and Wythe Marschall delve into different foods grown in cities. Moreover, we investigate the whys behind getting up in the morning and working as a farmer in the shadow of skyscrapers. You don’t need to be a farmer to enjoy this podcast, or even a foodie! With their expert guests, Melissa and Wythe break down the realities and possible futures of urban farming to their elements.So, how are seeds gender-defying time travelers? Subscribe to Fields and find out! In our first story, Melissa and Wythe talk to plant-focused artists Ellie Irons and Anne Percoco of the Next Epoch Seed Library and to Ken Greene, expert seed breeder and seed librarian. We explore how different seeds travel across time and space—sometimes becoming “invasive” “weeds,” and sometimes disappearing from human cultivation. Anne and Ellie are working to help all of us, especially those of us in big cities, rethink our relationships to the plants traveling all around us, to our neglected environments, to our politicized borders, and to the world’s rapidly changing climate. Ken is working with indigenous leaders to grow, save, and return—without keeping—sacred seeds. We talk about organic seeds, the ethics of growing, and farming while queer.
