Y3E01 - Revolution of the Daleks
Hello again, and welcome to another episode of Social Sci-Fi. Or should I say welcome back? Before we get started, I would like to apologize for having so little content in 2020. It was a really rough year for everyone. Eventually, we will get through this pandemic and find a new normal. For now, it means recording through Zencastr and not around the dining room table. It means a lot to me to be able to get a podcast up in January and the goal is to have one up each month. First, I'm going to focus on some good things from last year. I did lots of yard work, because playing in the dirt and growing beautiful flowers makes me happy. When the heating element went out on the oven I learned that YouTube really does have a how-to video for everything. I bought the part online and fixed it myself. A little later in the year, the dryer wasn't drying well and I turned to YouTube again and learned how to take apart and clean my dryer and didn't need to replace anything. I did not get a bingo on my pandemic/quarantine card, but I did bake bread, have several Zoom meetings, and I got more quality time with my dogs. So, wondering what the plan is for 2021? Year one was nearly all Doctor Who. I said last January that I wanted to change things up a bit and I had big plans, then I started off year three with Doctor Who again. No, this is not a Doctor Who podcast. This is Social Sci-Fi so we are going to talk about all kinds of science fiction and the social part, that is because I am a social worker and I see social issues everywhere I look. The world is on fire, there are too many problems and we can't fix them all. 2020 taught me to focus what is in front of me right now. Focusing on one thing at a time, nearly impossible task for this ADHD adult here. Luckily (or not) a lot of the problems are overlapping and require the same kind of care and attention. Science fiction, believe it or not, has always been a place where we can tackle social problems in an entertaining way. If you don't see the social/political influences in early sci-fi, you weren't paying attention. So that is what we are going to do this year. We're paying attention. We're going to talk about old and new, popular culture and some cult classics. We'll have returning guests and some new ones. I's going to be a lot of fun. If you're new here, check out season one and season two while you wait for new episodes. Thanks for joining us, plug in your headphones and enjoy. Y3E02 - 1970's Science Fiction
Hello again, and welcome to another episode of Social Sci-Fi. And now for something completely different. Maybe not COMPLETELY different, but different enough I felt I should warn you. This time around we looked at science fiction in the 1970's. It all started with a conversation with a friend at work about the science fiction we grew up on. One of those ADHD conversations that starts with Star Trek, and ends up with Planet of the Apes, and "you know what other Science Fiction movie Charlton Hesston is in? Soylent Green." She couldn't believe I hadn't seen Soylent Green and so I had to watch and SPOILER ALERT it is made of people. Once I saw it I had to see more 70's science fiction. I didn't watch as many as I wanted to and there are some I did watch that didn't make it in the podcast. We avoided the biggest ones, like Star Wars and Star Trek, for the most part, instead choosing to focus on a wide range of dystopian, utopian, and space adventures and aliens. I'm not sure it is possible to represent a whole decade in one podcast episode, but we did our best.  When choosing what to watch, I didn't give much thought to the social issues, but the 70's did not let me down. There was tons to talk about and it got me thinking about doing a decade review for a few episodes before I go back to the original plan for 2021. So, next month we'll look at the 80's. This month we had one new and one returning guest and you can find more information about them below. Stick around to see who joins me next month. I didn't scare Melissa off and I'm pretty sure Chrissy will be back for more adventures too! Y2E01 - Looking Ahead
Hello again, and welcome to another episode of Social Sci-Fi. This month we have a short episode, and it may be a little odd. This is what happens when plans fall through and instead of a full podcast, you get the ramblings from Lizz's brain. What I have learned from this is I need other people to talk to. A script is a good idea, but hard for me to get right and when I ad-lib it gets weird. Anyway, about this episode. There is a little bit about year one, if you haven't listened go check them out, there are 10 regular episodes and 3 special episodes. I also give you a sneak peek into year two. It's still in the planning stages so there are details on a few and then a little rambling when I get to my list of ideas that aren't fully formed. Thanks for joining me, and I promise, there's lots of cool stuff coming up.   Time stamps! 0:01 – 0:21 “Postcards” by Scott Holmes0:20 – 7:37 – Introduction, Plans for 20207:37 – 9:04 “Epic Cinematic” by Scott Holmes7:55 – 9:53 Outro Links of note! Y2E02 - Cartoons with The Shake Ups
Hello, and welcome to another episode of Social Sci-Fi. This month, I invited The Shake Ups, a local band to the Geek Cave to watch and talk about cartoons. When I say local, I mean to Indianapolis, but they run all over the Midwest and perform catchy songs in costumes from their favorite cartoons. The Head Geek has had them on the Indiana Geeking Podcast a few times, and you are already familiar with Luisanna from year one of this podcast. Now, I know it wasn't Saturday morning, it was Sunday afternoon, but there was still cereal and we had a good time. If you didn't grow up in the 80's watching Saturday morning cartoons, you missed out. In the spirit of those times, we watched the Netflix originals The Dragon Prince, Voltron: Legendary Defender, and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and Steven Universe Future which can be found on Cartoon Network. The Shake Ups have released original music for all of these cartoons, except for The Dragon Prince, and have also written and performed music based on My Little Pony, Scooby-Doo, He-Man, ThunderCats, and others. They have also done covers of The Beatles, and They Might be Giants. I am forgetting things, but you can find everything in the links below. You might wonder how cartoons fit the Social Sci-Fi theme, but If you are familiar with any of the ones we watched, you know that they are full of the kinds of things we love to talk about on this podcast. I would also like to say it was an absolute joy to have The Shake Ups over, and thank them for their time. Now, pour yourself a bowl of sugary cereal, curl up on the floor with whatever you listen to podcasts on, and join us for the next hour as we talk cartoons, Saturday mornings, and playing albums backwards! Y2E03 - Good Omens, Pt. 1
Hello again, and welcome to another episode of Social Sci-Fi. You're about to listen to part one of a special two part episode.  We watched and discussed the first three episodes of the Amazon Original miniseries Good Omens. We also discussed the book it was based on, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. Written by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett and published in 1990. We talked about a little of the controversy surrounding the release on Amazon Prime, some of the easter eggs in the show to honor the late Terry Pratchett , and things that were missing or presented differently in the miniseries. If you are not familiar with the book you will still enjoy the miniseries, but as you will hear you may be missing out on some of the jokes. When the book begins with a caveat that reads, "Bringing about Armageddon can be dangerous. Do not attempt it in your own home." you know you are in for a real treat. If you haven't see the miniseries yet, or if you started to watch and had trouble getting into it. Start with the 20 minute cold open of episode three and then go back and start from the beginning. Thanks for joining us, plug in your headphones and enjoy. Don't forget to check out the links for our guests and for other things mentioned in the episode. Y2E04 - Good Omens, Pt. 2
Hello again, and welcome to another episode of Social Sci-Fi. Before we get started, I would like to apologize for how late this episode is coming to you and assure you that it was recorded before official quarantine began. It has been a rough couple of months. While I would rather be quarantined in the Gee Cave consuming media and creating content, I have still had to go to work. It's been rough on my mental health and as much as I love editing this podcastn I couldn't do it. When you have four tracks that are about two hours and ten minutes long, that's a lot of pushing through depression to get finished. This feels like a HUGE accomplishment and I hope you enjoy it. There is a little lighthearted joking about what we thought was only going to be a few weeks of quarantine. We were taking it seriously, I deep cleaned and disinfected my house before having everyone over even though we were pretty certain we had not been exposed.  There were a lot of things we didn't know at the time, and had we known more it would have been discussed in a more serious tone. Besides working and fighting an exhausting battle with anxiety and depression, I have been making masks because it I needed some for myself to feel safe leaving the house and wanted to make sure friends, family, and a few neighbors had them too. I am still making masks with my limited time because I need to feel like I am doing something to help, but I am trying to get back into doing the things I love because it is good for my mental health. Take a short break from the stress and have a listen. If you haven't already listened to part one check it out here first. You're about to listen to part two of a special two part episode.  We watched and discussed the second three episodes of the Amazon Original miniseries Good Omens. My friends! Today, we have the newest podcast from the Team Geeking Family of Podcasts! On the inaugural episode of Social Sci-Fi, Lizz sits down with three friends to start looking at her focus for the first year of the podcast, series 11 of Doctor Who! This was the season that brought us our first female Doctor, a group of three companions, and a brand new showrunner! This month, they talk about their feelings when the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) regenerated, touch a bit on the fan reaction to the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, and discuss their feelings on this introduction to the new cast of characters! Joining Lizz in this episode is Luisanna, Rachel, and Greg, along with the occasional "Why won't anyone play with us?" whining from the Geek Dogs in the background. Happy Friday, readers and listeners! We are back with another episode of the Social Sci-Fi Podcast! This month, Lizz brings together Kendra, Rachel, and Luisanna to talk about episode 3 of the most recent season of Doctor Who, "Rosa". They talk about the episode, and also talk about their experiences with racism, as well as sexism. This is a fairly serious episode, covering a very serious topic, and I encourage everybody to plug in, and give the panel the next hour and eighteen minutes to fill your ears with their thoughts, their experiences, and their advice, both from a social work aspect, as well as from someone who experiences racism in their everyday life.   Time stamps! 0:01 - 0:26 "Postcards" by Scott Holmes0:21 - 1:16 Introduction by Lizz1:17- 1:42  Going around the table, introducing the guests1:43 - 1:15:45 - Discussion about "Rosa"1:15:45 - 1:17:11 “Epic Cinematic” by Scott Holmes1:16:03 - 1:17:11 Outro Links of note! Happy Friday, readers and listeners! We are back with another episode of the Social Sci-Fi Podcast! This month, Lizz brings together Kendra, Luisanna, and Ryck to talk about episode 4 of the most recent season of Doctor Who, "Arachnids in the U.K.". They talk about the episode, their like (or dislike) of spiders, and look at allegories between what happened in the episode, and what's going on right now in the world not protected by a Time Lord. So, sit back, and let the crew fill your ears for the next hour and change as they talk about spiders, sketchy hotel owners, immigration, and choosing your own family.    Time stamps! 0:01 - 0:54"Postcards" by Scott Holmes0:20 - 0:50 Introduction by Lizz0:51- 2:54  Going around the table, introducing the guests2:54 - 58:43 - Discussion about "Arachnids in the U.K."58:43 - 1:00:10 “Epic Cinematic” by Scott Holmes59:02 - 1:00:10 Outro Links of note! Happy Friday, readers and listeners! We are back with another episode of the Social Sci-Fi Podcast! This month, Lizz brings together Kendra and Rachel to talk about episode five of the most recent season of Doctor Who, "The Tsuranga Conundrum". This episode was your basic "base under siege" episode, as Rachel put it, but there was still some things the panel took a look at, and focused on. Since we didn't have a huge panel this week, and because this was more like one of your typical Doctor Who episodes, this month's podcast isn't really long, clocking in at just over a half hour, so you should have plenty of time during your lunch hour to pop in your earbuds, and listen to our panelists talk about this episode!   Time stamps! 0:01 - 0:21 "Postcards" by Scott Holmes0:19 - 0:42 Introduction by Lizz0:43- 0:49  Going around the table, introducing the guests0:49 - 32:41 - Discussion about "The Tsuranga Conundrum"32:42 - 34:09 “Epic Cinematic” by Scott Holmes33:00 - 34:09 Outro Links of note! SSFY1E10 - The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos
Happy Friday, readers and listeners! We are back with another episode of the Social Sci-Fi Podcast! This month, Lizz wraps up Doctor Who series 11 with the return of an old adversary in "The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos." She is joined by Luisanna and Rachel to talk getting Luisanna caught up with the previous episode, the return of "Tim Shaw," and the idea of revenge. Lizz has also started becoming adept at the editing, with this episode being another episode she did the lion's share of the editing on. All I did was add the intro music, and the pre-recorded outro! I feel this is worth pointing out because, less than a year in, Lizz has really dove into this project and made a part of, yet apart from, Geeking in Indiana. Not only am I thrilled for her, but I'm also happy in a selfish way, because it means there's one less podcast for me to edit! Now, this episode comes in at well under three quarters of an hour, so it's a nice, tight, short listen. So, sit back, plug in, and listen to the crew talk about Who!    Time stamps! 0:01 - 0:21 "Postcards" by Scott Holmes0:20 - 35:27 - Introductions, discussion about "The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos"35:27 - 36:55 “Epic Cinematic” by Scott Holmes35:46 - 36:51 Outro Links of note! VoltCon Part 1 - Happy Birthday, Voltron!

VoltCon Part 1 - Happy Birthday, Voltron!
Hello again, and welcome to another episode of Social Sci-fi.  For this special episode, I'm not talking about a show or a movie. Instead, I'm talking about a little convention I was able to help out with this past October, called VoltCon. As I was there, I decided to break out the podcast equipment and interview guests, vendors, and attendees. I was having such a great time, and I was hearing all kinds of wonderful feedback, so I wanted to talk to people about the con. Then, when the show was over and the dust settled a bit, I invited the organizers behind this local show over to the Geek Cave Studios for a full interview about the process of putting on a "small but mighty" convention celebrating the 35th birthday of Voltron. This is part one of a two part special. In the first part, I interview Kevin, Patrick, and Savannah, who were the crew behind the show. In addition, I have teasers of my talks with a show sponsor, the person behind the art used for the convention, and a couple of the guests. Next Friday, November 29th, I'll have the full interviews with everyone I interviewed at the show, from vendors to attendees, to get their thoughts on this first-year convention. So, sit back, and let us fill your ears for the next fifty two and a half minutes with talk of giant robots! Y1SP3 - Voltcon, Part 2
Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Social Sci-Fi podcast. I am proud to share part two of the VoltCon interviews. I had a lot of fun at the convention and was super excited to talk to Mama Voltron (Marika Levine) about her trip to Indiana and her love of Voltron. I also spoke to Chris Helms from Muncie, IN about his experience. In addition, I talked to several vendors about the show, and have linked their stores down below. Finally, at the end of this podcast are the full interviews I used as teasers in part one (link) with Tim Reynolds, Thomas Soltis, Marc Morrell & Greg Tyler, and Jeremy Correy. Forgive the background noise, we were in a common area of the hotel at the convention and while I was able to get a lot of the noise out, corn hole is not a quiet game. Enjoy the interviews. Check out the vendors. If you are interested in attending or vending at VoltCon 2020 bookmark the site and like them on Facebook and Twitter to get announcements when they start opening things up for the next con.
