Marcell Ozuna pacing Braves, Dale Murphy talks classic posters and Ben Lindbergh on pitcher injuries
With two weeks worth of games under their collective belts, the Atlanta Braves are sitting atop the NL East. Their biggest offensive contributor? None other that designated hitter Marcell Ozuna. Grant McAuley covered the big stories for this week in Braves baseball, including Ozuna's red-hot start and clutch hitting down in Miami, the loss of Spencer Strider, who underwent season-ending elbow surgery, how Atlanta will approach filling the void in rotation, and what the rest of the rotation needs to do in order to stabilize the pitching staff. You'll also hear from several Braves who'll share their thoughts on Travis d'Arnaud's value to the team and impact on their winning ways. Former Braves great Dale Murphy joins the show to tell the story of two iconic Nike posters from the 1980s -- Power Alley and Stickball. You'll hear the backstory of the creative process, the photo shoots, the tricks that made the posters an unforgettable part of Braves nostalgia, and even some abandoned plans for a baseball apparel line that would've predated today's crowded marketplace. On our trip around the big leagues, Ben Lindbergh of The Ringer joins the show to discuss the rash of elbow injuries facing MLB and what the league can do to curtail the troubling trend. From The Diamond will air live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on Sundays from 5-7 pm ET. You can also subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Atlanta Braves open 2024 with series win in Philadelphia
The Atlanta Braves got the 2024 season started by taking 2-of-3 from the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Grant McAuley covers the events of Opening Weekend as the Braves offense come to life and help secure the series, which could be an indication of more to come from the deepest lineup in MLB. Also discussed, the injury status of Sean Murphy, the important work by the bullpen -including the ageless Jesse Chavez coming to the rescue in Game 2, some ups and downs for Atlanta's top three starting pitchers, why Michael Harris II is primed for greatness, and some encouraging contributions from Jarred Kelenic and Adam Duvall. Maria Martin of 11 Alive in Atlanta stops by to discuss the state of the Braves and their championship goals, reflect on the magic that was October of 2021, and why Ronald Acuña Jr.'s article for The Players Tribune is just another way he's demonstrating his star power. For our trip around the big leagues, we'll delve into a rather heated debate on sliding etiquette between the Brewers and Mets, some offensive history for the Diamondbacks, Scott Boras' thoughts on why his big free agents had trouble finding the right deals, and a visit with Mike Ferrin of MLB Network Radio. From The Diamond will air live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on Sundays from 5-7 pm ET. You can also subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Ronald Acuña Jr. making history as Atlanta Braves face pitching injury issues
Ronald Acuña Jr. is putting together one of the greatest seasons in MLB history, one that should remove all doubt about who the rightful NL MVP should be. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Braves may have clinched early but now they have some question marks surrounding the health of their rotation heading into the postseason. Grant McAuley sizes up the week that was for the Braves, including Acuña's greatness and some stats that underscore the historic campaign, some other offensive numbers and notes, as well as a look under the hood for the Atlanta rotation as it deals with injury issues for both Max Fried and Charlie Morton. Jason Foster, who publishes the brand new "Total Braves" newsletter on Substack, joins to discuss the Braves uneven month of September and whether or not their inconsistent results after clinching have any bearing whatsoever on the playoff games to come. That and a discussion about Atlanta's bullpen, rotation and a little more on Acuña's season. Matt Snyder of CBS Sports stops by to do a deep dive on the intriguing playoff possibilities in the NL and AL Wild Card races and whether or not there could be a big surprise or two awaiting us in the season's final week. Atlanta Braves clinch NL East yet again, prepare for October
The Atlanta Braves extended their reign atop the National League East, clinching the division for the sixth consecutive year this week. Now the real work begins. Grant McAuley runs through the headlines and highlights for the week that was for Atlanta. The division clincher was earlier than usual and gives the club some time to sort out a few things for the pitching staff, rest some key players, and recharge for the NLDS. How will the Braves handle the roster decisions and manage innings down the stretch? Meanwhile, Matt Olson and the Braves are making home run history. Olson broke the Braves' single-season home run record -- now 52 and counting -- as the Braves take aim at the MLB record. How much time will MVP-hopeful Ronald Acuña Jr. miss after tweaking his calf on Friday? He is absent from the lineup this weekend, but the star outfielder and the club did not seem overly concerned, but neither want to chance it wither bigger aspirations awaiting them next month. Kris Willis of Battery Power joins the show to size up the Atlanta pitching staff while Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com checks in to size up the Wild Card races, big pitching injuries for several clubs, and the NL MVP race between Acuña and Mookie Betts of the Dodgers.
