Our Editor's Take

The host of the Skip Intro podcast spent over 20 years as Vanity Fair's ambassador to Hollywood. Krista Smith interviewed countless actors, directors, and other huge names in the industry. Her passion is talent-any form of it. She's curious about how people know they have it, how they cultivate it, and how they protect it. She wants to understand what drives it. That is what she does with her interview-based podcast.

Smith started her Netflix podcast in 2019 under the name Present Company. Since then, the show changed its name, but the format remained the same. The Skip Intro podcast title comes from a directive before Netflix shows. In each 30 to 40-minute interview, the host talks to an actor, filmmaker, or creator with a new show or movie on Netflix. They start by discussing that project in more detail. But soon enough, they veer into more personal questions.

Nothing is shocking or gossip-worthy in Smith's interviews. Instead, each discussion on the podcast is insightful and well-researched. The host's true mastery lies in how she can connect with each guest on a human level. In return, the interviewees always feel comfortable sharing aspects of their inner lives. These are honest and intimate experiences they haven't shared with the media. For instance, Hillary Clinton reveals her first-ever movie experience. When she was six, she went to the cinema with her grandmother to watch The Wizard of Oz. In another episode, Millie Bobby Brown shares how she deals with her anxiety with the help of her animals.

Apart from candid conversations, Skip Intro also has short two-minute episodes. These installments called The What & What, offer a viewing recommendation. Smith hosts team members of the Netflix Queue website, who share their favorite shows to watch. New podcast episodes get released several times a week.
