The Role of Physical Therapy for Senior Dogs with Dr. Courtney White

The Role of Physical Therapy for Senior Dogs with Dr. Courtney White
This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Courtney White DPT, CCRT of Oklahoma K9 PT Dr. Courtney White, DPT, CCRT, is the dedicated force behind Oklahoma K9 PT Canine Therapy and Wellness. Her passion lies in enhancing the lives of senior dogs by alleviating pain and improving mobility. Specializing in geriatric canine care, Dr. Courtney creates individualized treatment plans tailored to meet each dog's unique needs. By focusing on optimal function and independence, her goal is to help your beloved pet enjoy a longer, more active life. And you don't have to live in Oklahoma to obtain their services!Physical therapy for senior dogs is not just a luxury; it's a vital component of maintaining their quality of life. As dogs age, they can suffer from degenerative conditions such as arthritis or hip dysplasia, which might limit their mobility and affect their overall well-being. Engaging in tailored physical therapy helps to improve joint function, build muscle strength, and enhance flexibility. This proactive approach can reduce pain levels and even delay the progression of certain age-related ailments. Beyond physical benefits, therapy offers mental stimulation that is equally crucial for seniors. Activities like hydrotherapy or guided exercises keep your dog engaged, providing them with purpose and enjoyment during a time that can often lead to lethargy or behavioral issues. Additionally, the bond between you and your dog strengthens through shared experiences in therapy sessions, fostering trust and deeper connection. Investing in physical therapy not only prolongs mobility but enriches your dog's golden years with vitality and joy that echo through every wagging tail. At Oklahoma K9 PT, they understand that you may have questions regarding costs and service availability before making decisions about your pet’s health care. If you're interested in learning more about their comprehensive approach to pain management and mobility enhancement for your furry friend, you can visit their website and complete a brief form that will help them determine how best to assist your canine companion on their journey toward improved well-being. Bonus! They have a very resourceful blog geared toward all things senior dogs! Be sure to check it out here: https://www.oklahomak9pt.com/blog#/They even have a Senior Dog Workbook, which we will discuss fully in a later podcast episode, but you can purchase a digital copy here: https://www.oklahomak9pt.com/resources.html#/To learn more about Oklahoma K9 PT and how they can help your senior fur friend, click on the links below:www.oklahomak9pt.comhttps://www.facebook.com/OklahomaK9PT/Support the showYou can find Woody's Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary online at:www.wpsgss.orghttps://www.facebook.com/woodysplacesgsshttps://www.instagram.com/wpsgss/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7Tb1hKnOWEamQstkqAxEygWe would LOVE it if you could leave a thumbs-up or comment! Interview With Dog Parent Coach and Author Angie Winters
Sep 16 2024
Interview With Dog Parent Coach and Author Angie Winters
For dog parenting coach Angie Winters, who has worked with and rehabilitated over 1,000 dogs, the answer is clear: Training does not work for family dogs. In her new book Don’t Train Your Dog: A Pet Parenting Guide to Teaching Good Behavior, Calming Fear, and Raising Happy Dogs, Winters—whose record for fixing dogs who were deemed unfixable by experts is unparalleled—explains that training simply cannot teach dogs the skills needed for modern family life.  Moreover, it causes most of the behavioral issues to develop in the first place.  Its failure causes dogs to lose their homes, families, and often their lives. This breaks Winter’s heart, fueling her drive to help dogs and their families. For the heartbreak to end, dogs need us to drop the animal training mindset and instead communicate and teach from a parental perspective, Winters says. This means providing love, protection, and guidance rooted in an understanding of dogs' emotions and what drives them, their ability to understand us, how they are intertwined with us, and how they are similar to, yet different from, human children. With this understanding, dog families can drop the treats only or harsh obedience approaches that only confuse dogs and frustrate humans and offer instead firm but supportive parental guidance that teaches the essential doggie rules and family life skills, fixes fears, and ends aggression toward other dogs. In addition to explaining Winters’ approach in clear, relatable terms, Don’t Train Your Dog provides a set of simple guidance recipes for techniques that are neither too harsh nor too permissive and are easy for dog parents to use in their daily lives. These are also demonstrated in a series of videos that complement the book.Winters has seen that the results—happy, well-behaved pups harmoniously integrated into family settings—play out every single time.  You can learn more about Angie and her book here:https://parenting4dogs.com/https://www.facebook.com/angie.b.wintersSupport the showYou can find Woody's Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary online at:www.wpsgss.orghttps://www.facebook.com/woodysplacesgsshttps://www.instagram.com/wpsgss/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7Tb1hKnOWEamQstkqAxEygWe would LOVE it if you could leave a thumbs-up or comment! Dog Aging Project
In this podcast episode, we speak with Harmony Diers, the communications team manager of The Dog Aging Project. The Dog Aging Project is a study of healthy aging in companion dogs led by scientists and veterinarians at the University of Washington and Texas A&M University. This team is joined by partners at multiple Universities and private veterinary practices. The Project is funded by the National Institute on Aging (a part of the National Institutes of Health) and private donors. This multi-institution research project centers on two fundamental goals: understanding how genes, lifestyle, and environment influence aging and intervening to increase health span. The Dog Aging Project invites dogs of all ages, breeds, sizes, and health conditions to join this ambitious canine health study.  Enrolled dogs remain at home with their families throughout the study. Participants complete surveys about the health, environment,  and life experiences of their dog and provide veterinary records when possible. Surveys are updated annually, giving researchers lifelong data for each dog.  The study needs more participants, so if you have a dog in your home, please consider enrolling your pet. It’s a great way to contribute to the scientific knowledge about canine health and aging. You can nominate your dog at www.dogagingproject.org, or visit the Dog Aging Project on  Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, or TikTok(@dogagingproject) to learn more.Visit the Dog Aging Project resources library to find flyers, social media posts, and more to help spread the word. Navigating The Ups and Downs of Dog Rescue and How to find A Reputable Organization

Navigating The Ups and Downs of Dog Rescue and How to find A Reputable Organization
Finding a reputable rescue is paramount when navigating the ups and downs of animal adoption. A trustworthy rescue organization will have thorough screening processes, including a home check to ensure the animals are placed in suitable homes. While it may seem lengthy and challenging, understanding the reasoning behind these processes is crucial. It allows the rescue to gather vital information about potential adopters, ensuring a successful match between the animal and the new owner.Additionally, it's important to acknowledge that many dog rescuers have seen the worst of humanity, often having to rescue animals from neglect, abuse, and trauma, which can lead to protective behavior and skepticism towards potential adopters. Moreover, rescuers' emotional investment in each animal's well-being fuels their fervent arguments about pet ownership responsibilities. Some rescuers' caution stems from previous instances of returned dogs due to unforeseen challenges or lack of commitment from adoptive families, making them wary of new owners. Despite causing frustration and misunderstanding with a potential adopter, their behavior is aimed at ensuring the best possible outcomes for the dogs they care for the animals they care for.All that being said, here are some tips for finding a reputable rescue organization to work with if you are looking to bring a new fur friend into your life and home.Support the showYou can find Woody's Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary online at:www.wpsgss.orghttps://www.facebook.com/woodysplacesgsshttps://www.instagram.com/wpsgss/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7Tb1hKnOWEamQstkqAxEygWe would LOVE it if you could leave a thumbs-up or comment! Introduction to Behind the Scenes of an Animal Sanctuary: Tales of Love, Dedication, and Heartache

Introduction to Behind the Scenes of an Animal Sanctuary: Tales of Love, Dedication, and Heartache
Behind the scenes of an animal sanctuary or rescue, there is a lot of love, dedication, and sadness, and the people involved work hard to provide a safe place for animals in need. These dedicated folks work day and night to make sure every animal gets the care it deserves. Some animals come to the sanctuary or rescue with terrible injuries caused by humans, and the dedicated folks at the sanctuary or rescue give all they have to earn their trust and help them heal. It can be tough to see the scars these animals carry, but it only makes the team more determined. Every small success is a step towards healing and shows that love can overcome even the worst pasts. But there is also sadness because there are not enough resources or space to help every animal. This is a heartbreaking reality for those who want to save them all but can't. Working at an animal sanctuary or rescue takes a lot of strength to heal both bodies and hearts and to keep going, but it's not for the faint of heart or those who can't go the distance. In this #lifewitholddogs podcast season, I had the privilege to speak with several different, yet all amazing women who started an animal sanctuary/rescue, and they were gracious enough to share their stories about how they got started, what a typical day looks like, the highs and lows of sanctuary/rescue life, how the hand the stress, and what they would tell someone who expressed an interest in starting a sanctuary or rescue.Support the showYou can find Woody's Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary online at:www.wpsgss.orghttps://www.facebook.com/woodysplacesgsshttps://www.instagram.com/wpsgss/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7Tb1hKnOWEamQstkqAxEygWe would LOVE it if you could leave a thumbs-up or comment! Senior Snackers: The Health Benefits of Homemade Dog Treats
As dogs age, their dietary needs change, just like humans. Feeding them with nutritious foods is essential for their overall health and well-being. Homemade dog treats using real whole foods offer several benefits for senior dogs. These treats are easy to make, and you can control the ingredients used in them. One of the primary benefits of homemade dog treats made up of real whole foods is that they provide a high nutritional value as compared to commercial treats. Often, store-bought dog treats contain fillers, artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives that can be harmful to an older dog's digestive system. From Kitchen to Bowl: Why Home Cooking is Best for Your Older Dog & How to Do it Correctly
Home cooking for dogs is a growing trend among dog parents who want to ensure their older fur friends are getting the best possible nutrition. While commercial dog food can be convenient and cost-effective, it is often loaded with preservatives, additives, and fillers that may not be good for your dog's health in the long run. When a dog gets sick, most medical professionals will suggest a human-grade, whole-food diet. Well, why are we waiting until our dogs get sick to give them what they really need for their bodies to run at an optimum level?By preparing your dog's meals at home, you have complete control over what goes into their food bowl. One of the biggest benefits of home cooking for older dogs is improved nutrition. Commercial dog foods are often made with low-quality ingredients that do not provide the right balance of nutrients needed by dogs to thrive. By home cooking for your older dog, you can choose high-quality meats, vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats that are rich in essential vitamins and minerals. And don't forget, by making your older dog's meals at home, you offer them a great deal of variety in the food they eat, which they enjoy eating just as much as we do.Want to watch this podcast? Kibble with a Kick: Adding Whole Foods to Your Older Dog's Diet
If you are a dog parent, you want to make sure that your furry friend is healthy and happy. One way to achieve this is by feeding your dog real food alongside their kibble. Trust me; I get it. Sometimes it's hard to cook a decent meal for ourselves, let alone our dog, but cooking for your dog is not as hard as it seems. In fact, it can be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your pup.Firstly, cooking real food for your dog allows you to control what goes into their diet. Many commercial pet foods contain fillers and preservatives that can harm your dog's health in the long run. By incorporating fresh ingredients like lean meats, vegetables, and fruits into their meals, you are providing them with essential nutrients that promote overall well-being.Additionally, adding real food to your dog's diet can make mealtimes more enjoyable for them. For this episode, I put together an 8-page ebook on Kibble with a Kick: Adding Whole Foods to Your Older Dog's Diet and included three recipes I actually use here at the sanctuary.
