The Queer Family Podcast wants to normalize and celebrate non-conventional relationships. Host Jaimie Kelton believes in the importance of storytelling to build a community. She's an actor, author, and voiceover artist.
The podcast started in 2018 with the title If These Ovaries Could Talk. It was all about making a family the non-traditional way. In the first episode, Jaimie was pregnant, wanting to share her fertility journey. When searching for support, she found no resources for same-sex couples. So, she started the podcast to find and share stories from the LGBTQIA+ community.
Each episode of The Queer Family Podcast shares real-life experiences with inspiring journeys. "The Sharon Moms" talk about their Jewish faith and how they want to redefine roles in marriage. "The Real Dads of New York" discuss the adoption process as black dads who want to challenge stereotypes.
One episode discusses surrogacy with dads Erik and Adam. Their sister-in-law decided to carry their baby, while their best friend was an egg donor. For gay dads, building a family was not a concept they knew much about. So, they decided to share their journey on social media. They wanted to help deconstruct misconceptions and support other gay parents. Erik and Adam discuss everything from their roles as dads to the selfless acts of their family.
Another episode talks about adoption and the need to protect one's family. Guest Stacey Stevenson is the CEO of Family Equality. Her company supports the right of every LQBTQIA+ person to have a family. Stacey's story is inspiring. She advocates for queer parents and has gone through a journey of self-acceptance. When planning to have a family, she faced discrimination for being a lesbian. When one pregnant mom stated that she was open to all families for adoption, her life changed.
The Queer Family Podcast provides insightful episodes each week. The show helps redefine what a family means today. Jaimie is passionate about raising the visibility of essential topics like fertility. By sharing stories, she hopes to help and support others with all aspects of LGBTQIA+ parenting.
