S7E15 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 11 April 2024.     TSORR was on Myoli Beach in Sedgefield for this episode so the view was great.   This week's Twisted Twins featured tracks called ‘Winter’.  We looked to a local band called Crash Car Burn for the first track and then went back to the amazing Goats Head Soup album for a Rolling Stones song called Winter.  It’s interesting to note that this is one of the few Rolling Stones that Keith Richard did not play on.  The song was written and recorded by the two Mick’s – Jagger and Taylor.     Immortals was courtesy of Avenged Sevenfold, the title track off The Stage, the last good album they made before they went mental and served up the biggest turd in the history of metal.  off the Born to Run album, we took a listen to ‘Jungleland’.  Springsteen is at his finest on this groundbreaking album but it’s Clarens Clemons’ sax solo that really makes it Immortal.     The Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘O’.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: Oasis – What’s The Story Morning GloryOzzy Osbourne – The Ultimate SinThe Offspring – Killboy PowerheadOver Kill – The Grinding Wheel Artists Featured: King Kobra, Mötley Crüe, Phil Campbell & the Bastard Sons, Mick Mars, Airbourne, Doll Skin, Loverboy, Pat Benatar, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metal Church, KISS, W.A.S.P., Crash Car Burn, The Rolling Stones, System of a Down, The Winery Dogs, Thunder, Warrant, Judas Priest, Keel, Foo Fighters, Guns ‘n Roses, Massive Wagons, Phillip Sayce, The Pretty Reckless, Avenged Sevenfold, Over Kill, The Offspring, Ozzy Osbourne, Oasis, Green Day, Anti-Flag, Y&T, Triumph, Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, In Flames, ConilThe Story of Rock and Roll. The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E12
S7E12 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 21 March 2024.  It was full throttle out of the gate with Dio and ‘Evil Eyes’.  We had some new music from Dan Patlansky, Judas Priest and Bruce Dickenson.  Most interesting is a new single from Vended.  I am really digging Vended a lot, sons of Slipknot, literally, Griffin Tayor and Simon Crahan doing their parents proud.   To remind you to get tickets for next year's Green Day, The Offspring, and Fokofpolisikar concert in Cape Town and JHB we again took a quick track from each of them.   This weeks Twisted Twins featured a song called 'Lost in Hollywood'.  The new Judas Priest is out so obviously we continued to rave about that.    This week’s Immortals feature was incredible.  Mark Knopfler has assembled 60 musicians, mostly guitarists (he’s got Ringo and his son Zak on drums and Sting on Bass), and it is a veritable who’s who of guitar.  The track has been recorded by Mark Knopfler and Friends to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.  It’s a new version of 'Going Home' (Theme from Local Hero) and, it includes contributions from among others Joe Bonamassa, Slash, Springsteen, Joe Satriani, Steve Lukather, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, John Mc Laughlin, Brian May, the list goes.  Incredible.       This week's Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘L’.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: Loverboy – Get LuckyLed Zeppelin – Over the Hills and Far AwayLynyrd Skynyrd – Second HelpingLive – Throwing Copper Artists Featured: Dio, Chickenfoot, Phil X & the Drills, ACDC, ZZ Top, Saxon, Motörhead, The Union Underground, Overkill, Black Tide, Alice Cooper, Doomsday Outlaw, Michael Schenker Group, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Volbeat, Rainbow, System of a Down, Judas Priest, Bruce Dickinson, Bullet For My Valentine, Machine Head, Green Day, The Offspring, Fokofpolisiekar, Loverboy, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Live, Metallica, Megadeth, Vended, Piet Botha & Jackhammer, Joe Bonamassa, Dan Patlansky, Pink Floyd. The Story of Rock and Roll. S7E11 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 14 March 2024.  Last week we invented a new feature which, thanks to some audience participation, has become known as Twisted Twins.  It involves playing two songs with the same name but by different bands.  We continued with Twisted Twins on this show as well as the usual favourites The Diabolical Challenge and The Immortals.  The new Judas Priest is out so obviously we continued to rave about that.  There is also a new Pearl Jam album coming and we took a listen to the title track 'Dark Matter.  Plus we have great news!  Green Day, The Offspring and Fokofpolisiekar coming to SA in January 2025.   This week's Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases an artist in a way that typical  On The  Diabolical Challenge, we looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘K’.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: King Diamond – AbigailKrokus – One Vice At a TimeKiss – Lick It UpKid Rock – Rebel Soul Artists Featured: Nazareth, Mustasch, Buckcherry, Accept, Ratt, Iron Maiden, Volbeat, Green Day, The Offspring, Fokofpolisiekar, Great White, Jelusick, Cold Chisel, Airbourne, Mark Haze, Butch Walker, Tool, Pearl Jam, The Clash, The Stranglers, Annihilator, Burning Witches, Infanteria, Metal Church, Pink Floyd, King Diamond, Krokus, Kid Rock, KISS, Rush, Velvet Revolver, Elton John, The Beatles, Judas Priest, Saxon, Arch Enemy, Circus of Power.  The Story of Rock and Roll. Season 7 Episode 9 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 29 Feb 2024.  We had a full house in TSORR Central and the show was an absolute pleasure to do.   It was a good mix of classics, brand new tracks, heavy, not so heavy, something for everyone.   For this week’s Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases what an artist is all about, we gave the multi-talented Steven Wilson the slot.  Wilson is well known for his work as a solo artist as well as with Porcupine Tree released Hand. Cannot.  Erase in 2015.  We listened to a track called 'Happy Returns / Ascendant Here On'.    The Diabolical challenge this week looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘I’.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: Iggy & The Stooges – Raw PowerIan Hunter – You’re Never Alone With a SchizophrenicIron Maiden – Somewhere In TimeIn Flames – Clayman Artists Featured:  The Answer, KISS, Saxon, Accept, Black Sabbath, Papa Roach, Newsted, Nevada Beach, The Dead Daisies, Cold Chisel, Hollywood Vampires, Nita Strauss, Sixx AM, The Rods, Black Bone Nation, Jack Hammer, Sugar Drive, Rumboat Chili, Sons of Liberty, Judas Priest, Paradise Lost, The Stranglers, The Jam, Metallica, Steven Wilson, Ian Hunter, Iggy pop, Iron Maiden, in Flames, Hinder, Sheryl Crowe, Hell Yeah, Slayer, Augustines, The Gaslight Anthem, Parkway Drive, Five Finger Death Punch, Bullet For My Valentine The Story of Rock and Roll. S7E8 went out live on Rebel Rock radio at 19h00 on 22 Feb 2024.  It was touch and go with a fiber failure an hour before the show, big well done to the guys at Vodacom Fibre for sorting it out in time.  We started with a bit of ACDC and ‘Overdose’ off the Let There Be Rock album and just kept on building from there. This week's Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases what an artist is all about was the original version of Am I Evil by Diamond Head.  You may only know the Metallica version and they have indeed made it famous, but it all started here.  I went into the story in a bit of detail because it is one of the best examples of a win–win ever.  Everyone involved scored because of this track and it really is iconic.   The Diabolical challenge this week looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘G’.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: Halestorm – American BoysHinder – Homecoming QueenHell Yeah – Hell YeahHanoi Rocks – Two Steps From the Move Artists Featured:  ACDC, Bullets & Octane, Danko Jones, Mötley Crüe, Desolation Angels, Great White, Foreigner, The Eagles, ZZ Top, Theory of a Deadman, Palaye Royale, Iron Maiden Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Dio, Dire Straits, Jethro Tull, Green Day, Sex Pistols, Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders, Yngwie Malmsteen, Burning Rain, Diamond Head, Hanoi Rocks, Hell Yeah, Hinder, Halestorm, Saxon, Sakis Tolis, The Rolling stones, Suicide Bombers, Volbeat, Neil Young, Tom Petty.   The Story of Rock and Roll. Welcome to S7E7 of The Story of Rock and Roll radio Show.  This one went out on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 15 Feb 2024.  I was in Clarens with master guitarist Dan Patlansky and a whole lot of guitar maniacs so the show deals with that a bit, but for the main, it is straight down-the-line Rock and Metal, as you would expect.   This week's Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases what an artist is all about features the man himself, Mr Dan Patlansky with a track recorded back in 2006 on an album called Real. The track is called Bad Weather Blues and showcases just what a great player he is.  Next week I hope to play you a short interview Dan and I are planning regarding his new album Movin’ On.   The Diabolical challenge this week looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘G’.  The idea is that we have 4 albums and you can only pick one.  This week we had: Grand Funk Railroad – We’re An American BandGolden Earring – MoontanGreat White – HookedGuns ‘n’ Roses – Use Your Illusion II Artists featured:  Saxon, Volbeat, Thunder, Burn the Priest, Five Finger Death Punch, KK’s Priest, Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, The Angels, Cold Chisel, Rose Tattoo, Mother Love Bone, Junk Yard, Warrant, Suicide Bombers, Joel Hoekstra’s 13, Motörhead, Buckcherry, ACDC, Machine Head, Burning Rain, The Winery Dogs, Green Day, Blink 182, Stone Temple Pilots, Faith No More, Dan Patlansky, Grand Funk Railroad, Golden Earring, Great White, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Cadillac Sun, 12th Avenue, Seether, Rammstein, The Pretty Reckless, Arch enemy, Powder Finger.  The Story of Rock and Roll. Welcome to The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Season 7 episode 6 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 8 Feb 2024.  As always, the show consisted of 3 hours of Rock and Metal and covered all sorts of artists from late 1960 through to albums released this week.  You should find something amongst this lot, see 'Artists featured' below (in order of appearance).     The Immortals track this week came from Blue Öyster Cult, a track called Shooting Shark off The Revolution By Night album.  Buck Dhara on guitar never disappoints.  The Diabolical Challenge this week looked at the letter ‘F’.  As with last week's 'E', this one was not easy either, not a lot of bands starting with ‘F’.  Foreigner got bumped for Fokofpolisiekar which may not make sense to international listeners.  All I can say is that if you read the book, The Story of Rock and Roll, things will be clearer.  Fokofpolisiekar were a legendary live band and a huge part of my life in the early ’00s.   We looked at the following albums and played a track off each: Free – Fire and Water Five Finger Death Punch – American CapitalistFokofpolisiekar – LugsteuringsFoo Fighters – Wasting Light Artists featured:  The Jam, Motörhead, Night Ranger, the Temperance Movement, Phil Campbell, Roan Van As, Tom Petty, Iced Earth, hell Fire, Kiss, L.A. The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E1
Welcome to the 7th season of The Story of Rock and Roll radio Show.  S7E1 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 4 Jan 2024.  We kicked off with David Bowie and It’s No Game (Part 1) which feels like the perfect song for where we find ourselves in 2024.  The Diabolical Challenge has had a make-over.  In Season 6 I presented 4 albums from a specific year and listeners got to vote on which one they would choose if they could only take one.  Well with 52 shows in 2023, we ran out of years.  The new Diabolical Challenge looks at things alphabetically.  We will do two cycles A – Z to get us through to the end of Season 7.  Starting at 'A" we had: ACDC – Flick of the SwitchAvenged Sevenfold – City of EvilAccept – Balls to the Wall and Audioslave – Audioslave The Immortals track, a track over 7 minutes long that never gets airplay but is an amazing example of a band or artist at their best stays as is and we kicked off the year with Grand Funk Railroad and a track called ‘Inside Looking Out’ and that one was especially dedicated to Norman Roux.   Artists featured: David Bowie, Dee Snider, KK’s priest, Def Leppard, Iced Earth, Foghat, Hawkwind, Saxon, Scorpions, L,A. The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E51
This is a special episode.  The Story of Rock and Roll turned Six.  On 12 Dec 2017, the first-ever TSORR aired from the Mix 93.8 FM Studios in Midrand Johannesburg.  Six years later to the day, S6E51 aired live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 12 Dec 2023.  The world has changed, and my life has changed so it is good to know that the music has not.  The episode was a celebration of the bands and the songs that make the show what it is.  Thank you all for your support, wherever you are and whoever you are I am deeply grateful for your support.  I will continue to make sure that the show delivers the music that you have come to know it for years to come.   We skipped the Diabolical Challenge this week due to the birthday bash.  There were just too many bands and songs to recognize.  I had 9 hours of music (123 songs) that somehow ended up in a 3 hour 34 song show.   We made up for it with the Immortals feature where we needed the time.  The number 2112 is sacred to the show so to celebrate the 6-year anniversary on the exact date the show started 12 December i.e. 21 12 we took a listen to the title track of Rush’s masterpiece ‘2112’ Artists featured:  Sixx A.M., John Paul Young, Van Halen, Cold Chisel, Deep Purple, James Reyne, Scorpions, KISS, Joe Bonamassa, Rory Gallagher, Judas Priest, Dokken, Iron Maiden, Joe Jackson, The Boomtown rats, Audioslave, Matthew Good Band, Buckcherry, Danko Jones, ACDC, Foo Fighters, The Stranglers, The Clash, Rush, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Megadeth, Mötley Crüe, Hinder, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Lyzyrd Kyngz, Mötorhead, The Uninvited.  The Story of Rock and Roll. S6E50 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 14 Dec 2023.  People are winding down now, it has been a long tough year for most, so thanks very much for the support for Season 6 of TSORR and I wish you all an awesome festive season.   The Immortals Track tonight was something different.  Last week we played a track by Roger Kaye.  Roger was a very good friend of mine; I met him at high school and he was one of the most talented musicians I have ever known.  He was a multi-instrumentalist and did some amazing stuff.  All this can be found in my book The Story of Rock and Roll so I won’t go into any detail, but I mentioned a track he did for his father.  It is Prelude in Dm Symphony no 40 in Gm (K550), 1st movement Molto Allegro.  Music written by Mozart and interpreted by Roger on electric guitar.  He worked it all out instrument by instrument and the results are amazing.  This is a home recording that took him a few months to do.   The Diabolical Challenge featured 4 albums from 1999:Red Hot Chili Peppers – CalifornicationBlink 182 – Enema of the StateLive – The Distance to HereBuckcherry – Buckcherry Artists featured: Boston, Ratt, Dio, Steel Panther, ZZ Top, The Screaming Jets, Rose Tattoo, The Dead Daisies, Kid Rock, Metallica, Taylor Road, ACDC, Cold Chisel, Led Zeppelin, Greta Van Fleet, Rush, Threshold, The Stranglers, The Clash, Pixies, Phil Campbell & the Bastard Sons, Motörhead, Scorpions, Accept, Roger Kaye, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, LIVE, Blink 182, Buckcherry, Jelusick, Skid Row, Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, Piet Botha & Jack Hammer, The Burning, Temple of the DogThe Story of Rock and Roll.
