Our Editor's Take

The premise of the MonsterTalk podcast is that there are no such things as cryptids. The hosts are skeptics of the existence of Chupacabras, Yetis, and sea serpents. They find it incredible that people still claim to see such mysterious creatures. If they don't exist, are all those people lying? Or are they making similar mistakes in identification? How can there be so many witnesses of mythical animals without something connecting them? These are the questions that the podcast seeks to answer. It uses science to try to explain this historic phenomenon of weird sightings.

The primary host of the MonsterTalk podcast has had an interest in the paranormal from a young age. When Blake Smith was seven, he found the cryptid section at the library and became enthralled. He always felt unconvinced about the topic, however. Blake would spend his time researching and writing down his findings. In 2009, he finally decided to share his skepticism with the world with his podcast. Linguist Dr. Karen Stollznow agreed to join him on his journey. On the podcast, they attempt to find rational reasons for illogical events.

MonsterTalk started by dealing only with strange creatures. The first episode discusses Bigfoot and using DNA evidence to prove its existence. Later installments talk about Mongolian Death Worms, Yokais, and Mothmen. The hosts interview scientists and academics from various disciplines to provide explanations. Sometimes, even the most reputable experts are believers themselves. The hosts usually challenge their opinions, making the talks more logical.

As the podcast progressed, it began to discuss anything that might seem paranormal. There are episodes about demonic possessions, UFO sightings, zombies, ninjas, and more. In each episode, there is an interview with a notable figure. For instance, astronomer Phil Plait talks about the likelihood of aliens visiting Earth. Biology professor PZ Myers discusses the inspiration for Cthulhu. To understand the basics of skepticism, the hosts invite neurologist Steven Novella onto the show.

MonsterTalk is a good podcast for those who might believe in the supernatural but seek proof. Supernatural skeptics may also appreciate the discussions. New episodes come out every Monday.

S03E27 - BigFootage [Explicit]
[This episode contains some adult language.] This is the story of the search for Bigfoot as conducted by the NORTH AMERICAN WILDLIFE RESEARCH CENTER. (Which sounds a lot like the real Bigfoot research group North American Wildlife Research Team that famously setup the only permanent Bigfoot trap maintained by the national park service.) But while a lot of the stuff in this film sounds real - the whole thing is made up. The IMDB page gives you the details on the cast. A very good widescreen version of the movie is available streaming on Amazon. (Affiliate Link) The film follows a team of investigators who travel for months into British Columbia on horseback to find the secret valley of the Bigfoot where they will radio-tag a creature for study. Along the way they will tell Bigfoot stories and watch stock nature footage play out to a Jaws-derivative soundtrack.  If that sound sketchy, keep in mind their whole trip was planned by computer. The computer even gave them a sketch of what they should be looking for! The party of adventurers heads off into the wilderness. They will encounter many shadowy creatures along the way. They will try to out-science Bigfoot. Good luck with that. This is a historically significant film in some ways - and has led to some interesting research which will be discussed in a near-future episode of the regular show. I'm still digging. I included a brief snippet from the Eddie Murphy Biopic Dolemite Is My Name, which tells the story of Rudy Ray Moore. I loved this movie and recommend the biopic which is streaming on Netflix.
