Our Editor's Take

Australian True Crime explores the most shocking true crime stories down under. The podcast features Australia's strangest and most surprising crime stories. It discusses missing person cases and suspected serial killers. Many of the cases remain unsolved to this day.

Meshel Laurie and Emily Webb host the podcast. Meshel is an author and former stand-up comedian who loves true crime stories and case files. She is the author of the non-fiction book CSI Told You Lies: Giving victims a voice through forensics. Emily is a journalist and crime writer. She is the author of Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses who Kill and Suburban True Crime. She also hosts the podcast Killer Content, where she interviews crime writers.

Together, the two hosts investigate a variety of crimes across Australia. All areas of the country feature in this podcast, from New South Wales to Victoria. They explore crimes from cities such as Melbourne and Sydney. They also investigate crimes from across Australia's towns and suburbs. Listeners hear the true stories behind Australia's most notorious crimes. They also discover a few lesser-known Australian crime cases.

Each episode of Australian True Crime focuses on one event. The hosts narrate each story and include accounts from those linked to the crime. Both writers interview a range of key people in each case. Their interviewees include police officers, victims, and criminals. Some episodes explore the Australian criminal justice system on a larger scale. For example, the show investigates the barriers victims face in finding justice. They discuss the role of the media in bringing victims' stories to public attention. Meshel and Emily also recount the part the Australian police have played in these investigations. They demonstrate how the police have either helped or failed their victims.

Listeners have a choice of two episode lengths. The full version of each episode is around 45 minutes long. A shorter version of the episode, "Shortcut," is about 20 minutes long. This allows listeners to choose a more detailed version of the story or opt for a shorter overview. Australian True Crime releases new episodes once a week.

It was 12 years ago that we first heard the name Allison Baden-Clay.Like Samantha Murphy, we were told that Allison, a successful, vibrant pillar of the community, had disappeared into thin air after going for a walk.
