Other People's Pockets

Have you ever wondered how your friend bought that vacation home or why that colleague of yours makes everyone meticulously split the tab down to the last Diet Coke? Other People’s Pockets is a show about other people’s money. We ask people from all walks of life to get radically transparent about their personal finances in order to learn more about who we are and what makes us tick (and perhaps we level the playing field a little bit along the way?).

Our Editor's Take

Maya Lau, the host of Other People's Pockets, has always been curious about money. Before she had a podcast, she was a journalist, and she felt frustrated about the salary she earned. She saw that there was a limit to how much newspapers were willing to pay, which in her opinion, was not enough. She started to ask people in her life-and even people who she met on LinkedIn-about their post-journalism career paths. She wasn't shy about asking them about their salary, either. Lau wanted to know what her options were and how much she could make with those career choices.

Soon enough, Lau realized this avenue was a good idea for a podcast. Other People's Pockets is the result. She wasn't the only one curious about these statistics, after all. Whether someone was seeking a raise or a new career, this knowledge could be helpful. This podcast seeks direct and honest information about a variety of salaries.

With this podcast, the host gets to learn what people actually earn. More than that, she discovers how people also manage their money once it's in their bank accounts. In one episode, her guest might be a Hollywood writer who makes six figures. In another, she talks with an elite scientist who actually ended up homeless. Interviewees expose their financial anxieties and the way their parents talked about money. The podcast explores people's bank accounts and reveals the real dollar amounts.

This podcast provides more than financial voyeurism, though. It's also about education. To learn how to be wise with money, one has to learn from other people's successes and mistakes. Most of all, the podcast promotes salary transparency, which the world needs much more of. Other People's Pockets has new episodes each week.
