Host Polly Swingle is joined by Dr. Nick Mischel, MD, PhD, and Steve Watts, MOT, OTR/L, CSRS, CBIS, AIB-VR, to discuss Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). This procedure is FDA approved to improve symptoms of major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), migraines, and to help people stop smoking when standard treatments haven't worked well. The group also discusses ongoing research on this procedure for other neurological conditions.Dr. Nick Mischel, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience in the Department of Psychiatry at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine, which is also where he completed his undergraduate medical training. He specialized in clinical electromagnetic brain stimulation during psychiatric residency training at Duke University Hospital from 2015-2019. He currently practices psychiatry under Wayne Health and Greenbrook TMS, treating adult patients with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and other interventions for medication-resistant neurobehavioral conditions. She focuses her work on assisting individuals in developing and implementing communication and executive functioning strategies to feel successful, connected and engaged at school, home and/or work. Julianna enjoys educating the community and speaking to support groups as well as leading the LOUD Crowd wellness class.Alysha DeMay MS, OTRL is the Lead Occupational Therapist at The Recovery Project in Lansing, Michigan.  She has specialized in the treatment of neurological diseases and disorders since 2017 with special interest in functional movement disorders, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and concussion.  Alysha is passionate about neuro rehab and excited to bring the latest research to practice.Olivia Risko, PT, DPT is a staff Physical Therapist at The Recovery Project in Lansing. Nada is a graduate of Grand Valley State University, receiving her Masters in Occupational Science and Therapy and her post-professional Doctorate in Occupational Therapy. Nada joined The Recovery Project in 2021 and specializes in the treatment of neurological conditions and has a specific passion for working with individuals with stroke, traumatic brain injuries, and multiple sclerosis. Outside of The Recovery Project, Nada has spent 8 years as a teaching assistant in the gross anatomy and neuroanatomy cadaver lab for Oakland University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program, and has been a content editor of 3 textbooks and is also a published author.Lindsay Vos joined The Recovery Project in 2021 and is a stroke survivor, recreational therapist, marketing representative, and wellness trainer. Lindsay is a former collegiate athlete who graduated from the University of Toledo with her bachelor's degree in recreational therapy. Lindsay has always been interested in learning more about the brain and physical medicine and rehabilitation. She has a strong background working many years with individuals who sustained a traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury from catastrophic accidents. Lindsay is passionate about community reintegration and animal-assisted therapy to promote non-pharmacological pain management techniques which ultimately improve an individual’s quality of life. Lindsay knows what it is like to be both a patient and a therapist, as she suffered from a massive stroke in 2017. In this episode, Polly talks with Occupational Therapist, Eryn Donnellon all about heart rate variability and how it can serve as as therapeutic tool when managing anxiety.Heart rate variability is literally the difference in time between the beats of your heart, and is a function of our autonomic nervous system.  Heart rate variability biofeedback can help mitigate the effects of anxiety by slowing the nervous system's fight or flight response. Tune in to hear how rehab professionals can use this tool to help patient's affected by anxiety and what the latest research says about the use of heart rate variability to address mental health. Eryn Donnellon, OTR/L is an Occupational Therapist at The Recovery Project. She started at The Recovery Project as a rehab tech in 2018, and returned in 2021. Eryn has worked at all three TRP locations, most recently in Livonia and Clinton. Eryn is a certified Rock Steady Boxing coach, and Brain Injury Specialist through the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists, and most recently became certified as  Heartmath Trauma Counselor. She has devoted her entire life to caring for others and has been working in the healthcare field since the age of 15. Her biggest inspiration to help others stems from her parents – a doctor and a nurse – who inspire Sonia to continue their passion for healthcare. She has over ten years of experience in pharmaceuticals, mental health, public health, public policy, home health, and nursing. Her personal experience caring for her sick mother and serving as her mother’s case manager has inspired her to start Horizon Case Management. There are many challenges with navigating our complex healthcare system. Orthotist Seth Cochrill, CO, Physical Therapist Nikki Warner, MPT and Tiffany Crowe, a brain cancer survivor living with hemiplegia, all sit down with Polly to discuss the impact of a collaborative approach to orthotics.Nikki Warner is a graduate of the class of 2000 University of Michigan-Flint Master’s of Physical Therapy program. Seth attended Northwestern University receiving a certificate in Orthotics. He enjoys working with children and also people with neurological and neuromuscular disorders. Seth values relationships with patients, therapists, and physicians to achieve a team approach for orthotic care. This team approach allows for successful outcomes and patients able to achieve personal goals.     Tiffany Crowe is a 16 year survivor of brain cancer after being diagnosed when she was a senior in high school. Since her diagnosis, Tiffany has undergone twelve brain surgeries, which resulted in left hemiplegia with limited mobility in her left arm and leg. She has a great deal of experience with physical and occupational therapy, and with the use of various orthotics to help improve her functional mobility and safety.
