Mommying While Muslim

Zaiba Hasan & Uzma Jafri

Mommying While Muslim is a one of a kind podcast where two American born and bred Muslim moms share their experiences to raise second generation kids. Having experienced both pre and post 9/11 America, they're acutely aware of the unique challenges their families face on top of the regular messes that all moms share. Mommying While Muslim is a space to take back their stories, and tell those no one will air on the news or portray fully or fairly in the media. Zaiba Hasan and Uzma Jafri are moms first, careerwomen second, and global citizens at heart. They meet taboo topics head on because they weren't allowed to do it growing up, not at home or at school and work. They aim to better their immediate households, communities, and their momsisterhood the world over by telling the truths sometimes people don't want to face or to hear. Not everyone has the privileges they have and they are eager to learn, more than they are to share their own experiences. Always looking to give back, they find women and families who need a mic because no one needs a voice; they just need an opportunity to speak. Besides tough social issues, they also tackle political ones because when laws affect their kids, they're coming for them as well as the ones who make them! There's no lane that doesn't get taken here. Along the way, they recruit momallies for Muslim Americans who have been inordinately targeted for the last 20 years. True moms know that ALL our children deserve to be safe, loved, and happy, and we bust every yellow brick on the Islamaphobic road to make sure they all are. If you like good trouble, this one's for you! read less

Replay: Perpetuity of Ramadan's Spiritual Productivity
We are in dire need of it, hence the replay of Ustadha Hosai Mojaddidi's episode about impediments to spiritual consistency in our lives. While some folks tried to white knuckle it through Ramadan, we used it to treat our broken hearts and rage. But we are still worried about how to make the essence of this month make the world make sense after Eid. How do we carry our Ramadan routines forward past this blessed month and not lose the spiritual high we SO NEED right now? Let’s talk about train cars, the myth of parental ownership, suhbah (spiritual companionship), acts of worship we can rely on no matter our stage of motherhood, and insha’Allah walk away feeling energized to maintain the magic of Ramadan, keeping up steam for the rest of the year. Allahuma ameen. ☪☪Tune in to this episode and share it with a friend who needs to keep filling her cup while she hits the streets and phone banks to stop a manmade catastrophe THAT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED if everyone paid more attention to ALL children, and not just their own.  Links:Hosai Mojaddidi’s Website: http://hosaimojaddidi.com/about/ Hosai Mojaddidi on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hosaimojo/?hl=en Hosai Mojaddidi on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hosaimojaddidi/ The Golden Quran app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.goldenquran.freesoft&hl=en_US&gl=US Ustadha Hosai’s book recommendation: The Jewels of the Quran Imam GhazaliWeb: www.mommyingwhilemuslim.com Email: salam@mommyingwhilemuslim.comFB: Mommying While Muslim page and Mommyingwhilemuslim groupIG: @mommyingwhilemuslimpodcastSpace Vacation, The MusicalThe sci-fi musical comedy for the whole Family!Listen on: Apple Podcasts   SpotifySupport the Show.1. Replay: This Isn't How I'm Supposed to Feel
This week's replay is Dr. Fareeha Malik, DDS, mom of 2 with a history of severe postpartum depression. PPD ended up informing her relationships and and even her reproduction. Of course, we discuss how she she found healing. Bringing home a baby doesn’t always mean mom’s eternal happiness. Not all mothers feel “the way they should” after the baby is born, and may feel lost if they don’t know where to turn for resources. This endangers not only mom but also a newborn. In a time when 14000 children have been unalived in a completely manmade g-cide, this episode still has its place as one of the struggles mothers face. And for those of our momsisters delivering via C-section without anesthesia, delivering prematurely due to stress, shock, and manmade famine, PPD is a real threat with deep seated claws. May Allah SWT first and foremost secure the survival of our momsisters and their newborns born in an ongoing g-cide, and protect them from every evil of the heart and mind, and destroy the enemies who threaten their physical states. Ameen. We were so into the conversation that we didn't get to review the valuable resources we have for our community. check out the shownotes on our website or DM us.Links:1. This hiatus replay features Shaykha Tamara Gray, founder of Rabata, an online institute for and by Muslim women to educate themselves in Islam. She’s also an experienced mom who has a lot to share with moms about allying with their kids as part of their mothering. Mic drop moment 32:36 when Shaykha Tamara reminds us about the etymological relationship of the words “umm” (mother) and “imam” (one in front of whom we study, or leader), but on a lighter note at 44:15 “Shaykha Tamara: I am green beans!” Serious butterflies and chills in this episode, so don’t miss it!Tune in at 6pm EST and share with a momsister in search of female scholarship. Sumiya Khan, RD was recently on during our Where Are They Now series, and this is her original story from Season 2, in case you haven't heard it or don't know how to find it on your podcast app.She shared her devastating loss and was on the path to overcoming it at the time of this recording. Her advice on the do’s and don'ts during grieving are golden and should be printed for general public use! She’s truly a model of resilience, and since like-minded folks get together, Sanctuary Kitchen was [is] her passion, outlet, and work empowering refugees. We look forward to her supportive endeavors in Muslim bereavement based on her personal experience. Trigger warning: If you've experienced profound personal loss, you may not be prepared for this.As a role model for all, she lives life outside the box in her work and at home, showing us that through and in grief are opportunities for our growth and sanctuary. Make duaa for our sisters across oceans who  have had their love stories cut abruptly due to siege and assault that was 100% manmade and 100% avoidable. Replay: Motherhood and Multiple Loss
Thirteen thousand children and counting....and as you heard on our hiatus announcement, at home, moms are losing their kids, too, to the continued shock of the community. Why are we so shocked? Are we untouchable, above grief and trials from Allah? No, He's promised them to us, and we pray to pass all those tests. Ameen. One of the moms who came on before is our beloved teammate, Saira Sufi, who even recently moved us to tears at our gala when she shared the story of her son, Hadi. She is our role model, who embodies beautiful patience and imaan while facing what we can only imagine is lifelong grief. Despite losses that we would describe as "crushing," she crushed them, and instead has built a legacy for Hadi that will make those of us who never met him, truly regretful. This may be a triggering episode for anyone who has suffered immense loss and grief, so maybe listen in a group so you can support each other through this episode. Remember to pray for our sisters and families abroad who are waking up every day to the wrenching reality of an unalived child or relative. Their grief is so tragic because it was 100% manmade and 100% avoidable. Also, let’s never forget to support medical research and to join minority blood registries in case we can ever help another family avoid illness and loss. This episode is for every mom, sibling, and family who’s ever experienced the loss of a child, and we pray for their continued healing and reward with Allah SWT. SERIES: Ramadan Hiatus: Unready for Ramadan with Zaiba & Uzma
Zaiba and Uzma discussed how they faced the biggest "mommying challenges" during Ramadan 2019, and how they break us and make us. In light of the current siege in G@z@, we feel broken indeed and for that reason look forward to Ramadan. We were inspired to replay this due a recent post by @drhanaa,peacewithinhome, because the ummah is sharing survivors' guilt while our brothers and sisters suffer across the world because of our tax dollars. Everything sticks in our throats where our rage and tears are balled up, but her recent post about how to explain this Ramadan to our kids is key, and this episode is a reminder of the lengths we have gone to in the past for our families in Ramadan. This year, the stakes are higher. Oh, Allah, You are The One Who forgives greatly, and loves to forgive, so forgive us. (Tirmidhi). And let this be the Ramadan that brings forgiveness, mercy, and peace to the ones who need it most. Allahuma ameen. Spice it Up with Kink & Control
If this month's series title scared you, we can imagine today's episode title will, too. Rest assured, we have very tame info for everyone. In fact, it's info meant to help tame the problems we think are really big and we have all to ourselves, when, in fact, many people suffer silently with the same. And silence helps NO ONE. Getting control in the bedroom is everyone's right. We've talked pathology all month, so let's talk about practical equipment to help with some of those physical changes with time. What we use to get control CAN be used for kink, but it's not all about that at all. Drop your judgements at the door and grab your headphones for this one--not for easy listening while you're at the park with the kiddos!Tune in at 6pm EST and share this episode with your mom, sister, and daughters, as well as the men in your life who you love. DMW we can't wait to see you this Saturday 2-24-24!Links:1. SERIES Kink & Control in the Bedroom: Honeymoon Cystitis to Menopausal Dryness
We kick off our February series with the theme: Kink & Control in the Bedroom. Who better to teach us control there than Dr. Neda, NP, who joins us today to talk about sex during early conjugal relations in Muslim American bedroom life, and in later phases. While she’s better known as @hijabiluscious, her professional career has her taking care of people and their health needs first. And sex is a vital health need, as well as a marker of good health.Body autonomy is something near and dear to her, and she takes it a notch up by teaching us how to keep those luscious bodies autonomous and satisfied once they’re participating more often (emphasis on “often”) in sexual activities. Find out how to troubleshoot what’s not feeling right and more importantly, how to talk to both your doctor and partner about it. Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or head to our website landing page to listen up. Post 10/7 Muslim Narrative Changes
Dr. Maytha Al Hassen from the team at ‘Ramy’ is BACK to talk about the media shift that MAY BE happening as a result of mainstream being called out (finally!) for yellow journalism that vilifies Arabs and Muslims (at least this time in history). The Golden Globes just happened, so what about narrative shifts in entertainment media? Listen up, Hollywood!Ignore Uzma’s doom and gloom, and pay attention to Dr. Al Hassen’s takes on social justice influencers and events that may compel narrative media changes, and those that may continue to quell it. Replay: Visceral News Reactions
Our Muslim Moms and the News Series this month is an offshoot of our series of a similar bent from 2021. Sadly we aren't saying anything different this time around. In this replay, Zaiba and Uzma cite past big headlines that affected their physical and mental safety. Ask yourself how news coverage would have been different, and HAS been different for non-Muslims suspects. When do Muslim Americans hold their collective breaths and why? And how is it all the same now?Our expectations from media coverage must be higher and the biases of news coverage, because it endangers affected people, must be held to account., News coverage, and now social media coverage, result in perpetual Muslim grief. But only one of them is trying to undo oppression, while the other is a tool of it. Let's work together to prevent and punish dissemination of Islamophobic news coverage. There’s slamming of our hands on the table so watch your ears. We apologize! When Mainstream Coverage isn't Enough
For those of you who are counting on news from the ground in Gaza, you know and follow journalist Leali Shalabi who consistently provides daily 24-hour newscaps from Gaza. She’s not only sharing her process and commitment to covering Palestine, her insights into being a Palestinian American are mind blowing for us. We’re never too old or too proud to learn something new alhamdulillah. There’s been a lot of discussion about how Gen Z is changing the conversation on Palestine through social media. Hearing it from a Gen Z trained journalist who is also on social media to provide accurate information we can’t otherwise get from mainstream media means a lot to us.  It’s changed the language we are used to media using, as well as the news coverage being shared. As we say on the podcast, we have never been able to speak so openly on Palestine before 2023, and we really think social media has a lot to do with this. How is mainstream media falling in line and how is it not?The tides have turned, as the ICJ trial today proves, and we credit the new language of media fueled by the visual story of Palestine and thank journalists by choice as well as the journalists doing it under duress directly in the line of fire. We pray for their protection, reward, and freedom, as well as for justice on the world stage today. Allahuma ameen.Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music or head over to our website to listen today and share it with a young person considering journalism.    Leali Shalabi on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lealishalabi/Send esims to journalists in Gaza now: https://gazaesims.com/esim-purchase-tutorial/ Follow Palestinian journalists on IG@motaz_azaiza@wizard_bisan1@gazanewslive@gazamedicvoices@lealishalabiFollow Palestinian voices on IG@imeu@iampalipina@sbeih.jpg@jenanmatari@paccusa@dcipalestineAllies on IG@jvpaction@greg.j.stoker @owenjones84@breakingthesilenceisraelWeb: www.mommyingwhilemuslim.comEmail: salam@mommyingwhilemuslim.comFB: Mommying While Muslim page and Mommyingwhilemuslim groupIG: @mommyingwhilemuslimpodcastYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrrdKxpBdBO4ZLwB1kTmz1wSpace Vacation, The MusicalThe sci-fi musical comedy for the whole Family!Listen on: Apple Podcasts   SpotifySupport the Show.1. SERIES Muslim Moms in Media: They Are Not Just Numbers
We want to credit @trtworld for its article "What's it's like to be a parent in Gaza" that informs today’s episode. This is an older article from late October 2023, but it's awful how 90 days seems ages ago when we are talking about tens of thousands of unalived humans. It's critical to share the stories of 🍉's when many in the world, and in our own country, still think it's okay to dehumanize people. This is the way they've been able to justify politicizing "ceasefire" when as moms, we know it's the only way to keep ALL our children safe. This month's series is Muslim Moms in the Media, discussing our hope that the misinformation and disinformation campaigns that assume we are all too stupid to look things up are seeing their days numbered. May it be so Allahum ameen. Criticism is not racism when we question actions, not beliefs. Join us this month as we follow the narrative and fact finding changes that have come with the democratization of information, but how to do it responsibly, and humanely.  The time to humanize Black and Brown bodies was yesterday, but we know we can catch up God willing.Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Googleplay, Amazon Music, or head to our website landing page using the link in our bio. Benevolence in the Face of Brutality
Mariam Muhanna comes on today with experience both working and living as an expat in Gaza for several years prior to coming back to the United States. Hear about her day to day experiences and why she wants to go back. Also remember to pray for her many immediate family members who have been killed within the last 80 plus days. May Allah SWT reunite them all in Jannah (Heaven). Ameen. We get some insight into how Gazans are deeply affected by any losses in a tight community, but it’s still unimaginable. It’s a crime to dehumanize this place and its population in the ways the media and those in power have done, and we’re more than humbled to have Palestinian voices on our podcast to affirm the humanity of all people. We’re pretty sure, like us, you’ll want to go there one day to feel the beauty of the land and its people. May it be a reality soon insha’Allah.Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Google Play, or head over to our website landing page and click “Listen.” Find Mariam’s blog about life in Gaza on IG: mariammuhanna21@gmail.comTo learn the basics about Palestine: https://www.thepalestineacademy.com/https://teachpalestine.org/https://www.visualizingpalestine.org/visuals/six-wars-oldTo donate to ground relief efforts in real time: https://www.mecaforpeace.org/https://palestinian-ama.org/  Web: www.mommyingwhilemuslim.comEmail: salam@mommyingwhilemuslim.comFB: Mommying While Muslim page and Mommyingwhilemuslim groupIG: @mommyingwhilemuslimpodcastYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrrdKxpBdBO4ZLwB1kTmz1wSpace Vacation, The MusicalThe sci-fi musical comedy for the whole Family!Listen on: Apple Podcasts   SpotifySupport the Show.1. Black Palestine
Vice President of Operations at Pillars Fund Kalia Abiade. Pillars Fund is dedicated to empowerment and support of Muslim voices. We know that Muslims have plenty of voices, but no one to hear them and no mainstream platform where they’ll be taken seriously without having to first perform someone else’s self-righteous qualifier. Kalia was in Palestine tracing her family history when October 7th happened. Her chilling experience to get home is still being written in her heart and mind, and we pray she can make sense of what happened there. As we all are since. Connect all resistance movements with Black America, press accountability, and how to talk to our kids about oppression are packed in here. In addition, as someone genetically endowed to lead social justice movements, Kalia shares the humanity of Palestine as well as the atrocities of occupation she witnessed before 10/7 to provide context of what that attack meant for all oppressed people. Her quiet wisdom is critical in considering our roles against all injustice, and to maintain humility while doing it. Links:Pillars Fund Website: https://pillarsfund.org/Space Vacation, The MusicalThe sci-fi musical comedy for the whole Family!Listen on: Apple Podcasts   SpotifySupport the Show.1.
