The Apocalypse Players is a thrilling actual-play RPG podcast. Rather than the more common Dungeons & Dragons, this show tells its stories through Call of Cthulhu. Host and Keeper of Lore Dominic Allen guides his players through a variety of mystery games. Players Joseph Chance, Danann McAleer, and Dan Wheeler assume different roles each season. Together, they explore cosmic horror-themed stories.
Like D&D, Call of Cthulhu relies on roleplaying and dice rolls. The players assume the roles of detectives solving a mystery. Characters have different skill sets that make them better at certain tasks. A poor roll of the dice may mean disaster if the players make the wrong move. The Apocalypse Players use the rules of the game to tell fascinating stories. Most of them involve the mythos created by H.P. Lovecraft, as well as Dominic's creations.
The hosts' British accents lend charm to the show, when someone isn't playing an old man in Texas or a New York detective. Besides the players' skilled improvisation, the podcast features sound effects and music. The result is an immersive listening experience. The show is approachable for those of any level of familiarity with the roleplaying game.
Dominic's experience as a writer and actor makes him a charismatic game master. He has extensive knowledge of language and a range of RPG systems. Joseph is also a writer who has created several of his own Call of Cthulhu scenarios. When he isn't playing, Danann is a musician and scholar of Shakespeare. Like Dominic, Dan is a multi-hyphenate with experience in acting and writing. Together, the four players bring their acting and roleplaying talents to this podcast. Scenarios the hosts have played include "Crimson Letters” and "Christmas in Kingsport."
The Apocalypse Players is equal parts live gameplay and captivating mystery audio drama. New podcast episodes come out on Mondays.
