Shelby's birth of Eli at home (Queensland) || Homebirth after 3 birth centre births (Shoulder dystocia, NICU, Preterm PROM, Meconium)
Send me your feedback!Episode 36 is shared by mum to 4 under 6 years, Shelby. Shelby felt naive going in to her first 2 births, and although she learnt about homebirth (via freebirth first!) after her 2nd baby, she chose to have another birth centre birth. It wasn't until after reflection many months later, that she decided for her 4th baby she would plan a homebirth. An episode that makes you think about why 3 non-homebirths had so many issues, but her 4th baby who was born at home, was so different. Resources: Velamentous Cord Insertion https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/24111-velamentous-cord-insertionPreterm Premature Rupture of Membranes https://evidencebasedbirth.com/ebb-281-mini-q-a-on-the-evidence-on-preterm-prom/IVF & Induction https://www.therealbirthcompanyltd.com/2021/04/28/ivf-and-stillbirth/Meconium in waters https://midwifethinking.com/2015/01/14/the-curse-of-meconium-stained-liquor/Learn more about me, my offers as a doula & the podcast here: https://www.birthingathome.com.au/CHAPTERS00:00Shelby's Birth Center Births06:15Discovering Home Birth08:08Overview of First Two Births11:21Dealing with Shoulder Dystocia28:36Bringing Baby Home on Oxygen33:25Considering Induction for Future Pregnancies34:53Making an Informed Decision39:59Dealing with Others' Opinions41:22Finding the Right Midwife43:31Unexpected Early Labor48:43The Excitement of Catching the Baby54:07Creating a Comfortable Birth Space57:41Returning to Normalcy After Birth01:03:13Passing on the Knowledge of Home Birth01:05:24Challenges with Publicly Funded Home Birth01:06:45The Power of Physiological BirthSupport the Show.

Send me your feedback!Episode 31 is shared by the amazing Crystal who after having had a traumatic hospital birth, had 4 births at home, 3 of which were freebirths. They weren't without their challenges but these stories reinforce that every birth is different, and that in today’s westernised societies especially, we are encouraged to only view one version of birth as ‘normal’ the one that is usually labelled as ‘low risk’. It is with this variation that we learn and can appreciate the power and magic of women’s bodies. Links to resources: Ina May Gaskin TEDx Talk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9LO1Vb54ykSpinning Babies https://www.spinningbabies.com/About moxibustion https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3789413/Orgasmic Birth https://www.orgasmicbirth.com/CHAPTERS07:01Crystal's First Birth and Desire for Home Birth27:06Discovering Home Birthing and Free Birthing32:45The Birth of Crystal's Second Child43:31Choosing Home Birth for Lazarus44:26Trauma in the Hospital: Feeling Out of Control51:48Distrust of the Body: Overcoming Negative Conditioning01:04:04The Curse of Death: Navigating Fear and Doubt01:19:38Rebellion and Empowerment: Trusting the Body's Wisdom01:26:23Believing in the Self: Finding Healing and Empowerment01:47:00 Snapped umbilical cordSupport the Show.

Adelle's birth of Atticus at home (Western Australia) || From the 'dead baby' card to having a HBAC like an absolute GODDESS
Send me your feedback!Episode 30! Today's episode is shared by (Adelle) Del from Perth. Del talks us through her journey to finding homebirth. Going in to her first birth hoping for a 'low intervention birth' ended in fighting a diagnosis of down syndrome, then finding an induction and eventually falling victim to the cascade of intervention which ended with a traumatic c-section. Determined to reclaim her power that had been taken from her, Del went on a journey of learning about vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) and subsequently, HBAC. An amazing story!! I'm also so happy to start sharing podcast  promo's from like minded podcasts - if you would like to bea featured, please contact me on instagram. This episode promo is from 'Born for This' @bornforthis_thepodcast Links to resources:Fiona Roberson - Trauma counsellor https://fionarogerson.com.au/rethinkingtraumawaitlist/C-section Scar Healing https://gigimok.com.au/?fbclid=IwAR1NIrbH5OQFqd1hA0GUFHWohB4g-uNbg30CE8wbJiXP38HuguhlNJlekt4_aem_AS88degQ8pMVU6O9WNi3doCvPvB_JBmWM9L96xvZ_7xwHedaal3gzpOVGRHCMrfTKsqQI9HP9ljtlcndHNObcfIjThe Naked Doula Birth Education Course https://www.thenakeddoula.com/The Homebirth VBAC Suport Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/vbachomebirth/CHAPTERS 00:31Del's Journey to Home Birth After Caesarean09:12Fragmented Care and High-Risk Label13:41Coercion and Fear Mongering26:37Cesarean Birth33:01Reflection and Healing34:56Preparing for a Different Birth35:25Lack of Information and Consent in Hospital Births36:46Limited Options for VBAC in Perth38:08Financial Considerations for Home Birth39:04Finding a Supportive Private Midwife39:30Alternative Tests and Declining Interventions40:53Preparing for Home Birth42:13Formal Education and Alternative Therapies44:03Trusting the Process and Overcoming Doubts46:40The Birth Experience and Reclaiming Autonomy49:24Growing Home Birth Community in Perth51:45Preparing the Birth Space and Prodromal Labor55:41Transitioning to the Birth Pool59:32The Birth of Atticus01:02:24Postpartum Experience and Healing01:08:30Spreading Awareness and Empowering WomenSupport the Show.

Rachel's birth of Sol at home (Aotearoa/New Zealand) || healing homebirth, bleeding in pregnancy, Māori traditions
Send me your feedback!Episode 29! Wow, I really loved hearing Rachel's stories. Rachel is mum of 4 from Aotearoa that had her first 2 babies in a 'maternity home' or birth centre in Aotearoa, then travelled to Australia planning her first homebirth which resulted in a traumatic transfer related to bleeding in her pregnancy, which also was retraumatsising. Rachel then returned to Aotearoa and had a wild pregnancy and homebirth - the birth of Sol. ** Trigger warning ** Rachel's story is incredible, it does include a traumatic homebirth transfer to hospital at approx. 35 mins and mention of sexual assault. If you are soon to give birth or anxious, this might not be the episode for you Rachel's stories are thought provoking and special & I'm so grateful for her honesty and authenticity in sharing. Links to businesses/resources: History of birth in Aotearoa https://heritageetal.blogspot.com/2020/02/the-time-of-natures-trial-childbirth-in.htmlMaternity Homes https://sites.google.com/site/nzprivatematernityhomes/new-zealand-private-maternity-homes?authuser=0Bleeding in pregnancy - Birthing Instincts Podcast episode  https://open.spotify.com/episode/7757iOu1vHHAHBaCNckEP8?si=91791bde3f0e4176Mirimiri massage https://temanutoroa.org.nz/wellness-centre/mirimiri/#:~:text=Mirimiri%20means%20%E2%80%9Cnatural%20gift%E2%80%9D%20and,by%20kaum%C4%81tua%20to%20successive%20generations.Yoni Steaming https://www.wildwoodbirthpdx.com/yoni-steamPacific Mother film https://www.pacificmotherfilm.com/CHAPTERS: 00:58Rachel's Birth Center Births05:01Birth Centers in New Zealand06:25Placenta Traditions08:19Traumatic Birth Transfer09:14Birth Experiences with Meadow and Sky12:01Preparing for Reef's Birth16:29Moving to Australia19:09Bleeding and Hemorrhage21:07Considering Home Birth Again25:47Deciding on a Home Birth28:54Waters Breaking and Bleeding34:38Transfer to Hospital37:33Traumatic hospital birth experience43:16Decision to return to New Zealand46:13Conscious conception and wild pregnancy49:24Pregnancy experience with Sol54:34Preparing for Sol's birth58:44Labor begins01:04:28Birth of Sol01:05:54Tearing and postpartum recovery01:09:06Reflection on Sol's birthSupport the Show.

Nathalie's birth of Remy (New South Wales) || Finding homebirth as a 2nd time mum with GDM & Anxiety
Send me your feedback!Welcome to episode 27! In this weeks episode, Nathalie shares her journey to finding homebirth, after having a very negative experience in the hospital system, further complicated by the label of gestational diabetes. Nathalie thought that she could navigate the system with her GDM diagnosis, however over half way through her 2nd pregnancy, her doula suggested finding a homebirth private midwife to support her, and from there she discovered homebirth. We also reflect on how her anxiety was used against her, and how it impacted her pregnancy and birth experiences, and we also discuss post partum. Links to people/business/resources for this episode:Newcastle and surrounds homebirth community FB group https://www.facebook.com/groups/newcastlehomebirthcommunity/The Midwives Cauldron Podcast - Gestational Diabetes https://themidwivescauldron.buzzsprout.com/1178486/8857485-gestational-diabetes-the-baby-s-perspectiveLily Nichols Nutrition in Pregnancy https://lilynicholsrdn.com/Post partum pre-eclampsia https://www.mountsinai.org/health-library/diseases-conditions/preeclampsiaEvidence on benefits of a doula/birth support https://evidencebasedbirth.com/the-evidence-for-doulas/Anxiety in pregnancy https://panda.org.au/articles/getting-help-support-during-pregnancy/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA0bWvBhBjEiwAtEsoW_ey_QGj7lZvmGDaPeuNLqv5OMBeKQHA1j36NtnTEJem2XJNfsveOxoCNh4QAvD_BwEWhite Coat Syndrome https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/23989-white-coat-syndromeKinesiology in pregnancy https://www.essentialme.com.au/blog/2019/11/02/how-kinesiology-can-help-you-conception-and-beyondReclaiming birth as a rite of passage by Dr Rachel Reed https://www.rachelreed.website/rcrpBirth Skills by Juju Sundin https://woomwomen.com.au/products/birth-skills-bookJane Hardwick Collins https://janehardwickecollings.com/Meal Train Post Partum Food Delivery https://www.mealtrain.com/CHAPTERS00:53Natalie's Hospital Birth Journey06:32Learning About Home Birth08:28Natalie's First Pregnancy and Hospital Birth09:27Disjointed Care and Gestational Diabetes Diagnosis12:14Exploring Home Birth as an Option16:30Navigating the Hospital Pathway25:35Reflecting on the Birth Experience28:26Pregnancy with Remy and Gestational Diabetes32:15Increased Nuchal Translucency and Anxiety35:41Considering Home Birth with a Private Midwife36:47Finding a Private Midwife39:10Mental Health Support during Pregnancy40:09Dealing with Gestational Diabetes42:57Pregnancy Challenges and Health Anxiety45:13Preparing for Birth with Education and Support48:29Going into Labor with Remy52:33Midwife Delay and Birth Pool55:50Birth Experience and Postpartum01:05:08Feeling Empowered and Postpartum ChallengesSupport the Show.

Send me your feedback! In episode 26, Shelby from Western Australia shares her amazing freebirth with her first baby, Hawk - she is also planning her second freebirth for early-mid 2024! You don't come across a lot of freebirth stories as a first time mum - so this is such a beautiful story to add to teh collection of women taking back their power and autonomy in birth --- it also highlights problems with the maternity system, as Shelby initially did want birth support! Links to people/business/resources for this episode:Freebirth Society Course https://www.freebirthsociety.com/Sauna's during pregnancy https://www.sydney.edu.au/news-opinion/news/2018/03/02/pregnant-women-shouldnt-shy-away-from-exercise-in-warm-weather.htmlDown to Birth Earth book https://shellylangford.com.au/product/down-to-earth-birth-book-jenny-blyth/CHAPTERS00:31Shelby's Decision to Free Birth01:23Background and Family03:10Choosing Home Birth04:09Difficulty Finding a Midwife05:06Scans and Tests06:30Ash's Reservations07:51Ambulance Cover08:45Engagement with Medical Tests09:43Positive Scan Experience11:34Birth Education12:57Becoming a Doula13:57Finding a Doula14:46Doula Support for Ash16:38Reactions from Family and Friends18:35Impact on Younger Generation19:33Working Through Fears and Concerns20:04Preparing Physically and Mentally22:18Estimated Due Date23:42Birth Timing and Holidays24:40Physical Preparation26:02Hot Springs and Pregnancy27:30Listening to Your Body28:58Exercise and Nutrition During Pregnancy30:53Different Rules for Pregnancy and Labor32:17Signs of Labor34:13Doula Availability35:11Preparing for Labor37:29The Birth of Hawk40:23The Halo Hour48:48The Placenta49:19Postpartum Experience51:24Preparing for the Second Birth53:43Looking Forward to the Second Free BirthSupport the Show.

Midwife Kristine Lauria || Supporting twins, triplets and breech at home + Doctors Without Borders
Send me your feedback! One of my favourtite episodes, talking to Kristine was incredible. What a woman. Working with some of the highest risk women in the world in refugee camps amongst other very low/impoverished places where c-section rates are only 5% and the whole scope of midwifery care is used. Whilst she is also a registered midwife, former traditional midwife, in the United States where she recently supported her approx. 10th set of triplets at home. Kristine doesn't practice as a primary midwife in the states but she shares her incredible adventures and tales via her instagram and blog. Additionally, she works with Breech Without Borders, supporting the lost skills of breech vaginal birth to midwifes and doctors. An incredible episode!! Links to people/business/resources for this episode:Kristine's instagram @globalmidwife64Kristine's blog  https://midwifewithoutboundaries.wordpress.com/Breech Without Borders https://www.breechwithoutborders.org/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) https://donations.msf.org.au/donate/e2310isrpalga?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAw6yuBhDrARIsACf94RVkXS7hdScrSaIVuo6t4EWjNzOR7svAStKNeLmAYp89pI6ehPC8ZBIaAlkKEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.dsDr Bisits talking about Breech on The Great Birth Rebellion https://www.melaniethemidwife.com/podcasts/the-great-birth-rebellion/episodes/2147886882CHAPTERS03:00The Freedom of Practicing Midwifery allegally06:00Learning About Home Birth09:00Licensing and Regulation of Midwives13:00Supporting Physiological Birth in High-Risk Situations17:00Attending Triplets and Twins at Home20:00Teaching Breech Skills with Breech Without Borders25:00Managing Triplets Births28:00Postpartum Care for Multiples35:00Home Birth in Different Cultures41:20Cultural Differences in Home Birth47:09Working as the Only Expat Midwife50:39High-Risk Factors for Women53:26Gratitude and Living in the Moment56:57The Medicalization of Birth58:45Taking Responsibility for Birth59:30Empowering Women to Demand ChangeSupport the Show.

Send me your feedback!Episode 23 is the birth story of Nia, who Tash gave birth to at home after having had a c-section. Tash tells her experience of a 'failed' induction for an unclear and inconsistent pre eclampsia diagnosis, that also led to the seperation of her and baby Leo, and ultimately severly impacted her post partum.  Tash wasn't aware of homebirth, until choosing continuity of care, and learning from her private midwife of the possibility of homebirth.  This is a powerful and beautiful story of Tash getting bacl her self belief as a woman, and as a mum. Links to people/business/resources for this episode:Breast Cancer & the Braca 1 Gene https://www.breastcancerspecialist.com.au/procedures-treatment/prophylactic-mastectomy-risk-reducing-mastectomy-immediate-reconstructionBMI and pregnancy https://www.sarawickham.com/plus-size-pregnancy/Double Uterus https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/double-uterus/symptoms-causes/syc-20352261Hypertension in pregnancy https://australianprescriber.tg.org.au/articles/management-of-hypertension-in-pregnancy.htmlWhy Induction Matters by Dr Rachel Reed https://www.rachelreed.website/wimHBAC research https://www.sarawickham.com/research-updates/hbac/The Positive Birth Company https://thepositivebirthcompany.co.uk/FREE Antental Classes https://coreandfloor.com.au/products/antenatal-classesVaginal Examinations on The Great Birth Rebellion Podcast https://www.melaniethemidwife.com/podcasts/the-great-birth-rebellion/episodes/2147802824Support the Show.
