Shawn Swords and Savannah Swords pull up on Canada Hoops ! The father and daughter combo sit down with us to share their basketball story thus far. Shawn and Savvy let us know what is keeping them busy right now as their seasons start to get underway for the Long Island Nets and the LuHi Crusaders for Shawn and Savvy respectively. Shawn attempts to settle the debate for us as to who is the best basketball player in the Swords family before he takes us back to the start of his basketball journey. Shawn loved to play the game as he tried to spend time with his siblings. Shawn tells us how he wound up playing at Laurentian University where he started an impressive career as a player and eventually becoming the Head Coach at Laurentian as well. Savvy lets us know about her goals this year at LuHi, tells us why she likes Breanna Stewart a lot and also hints at the fact she has some schools in mind already when it comes time to make a decision about playing at the next level.  Shawn tells us about his best memories at Laurentian before he takes us through his pro journey; with stops all throughout Europe. Shawn lets us know how his coaching career began and why he has his eyes on getting to an NBA bench at some point.And you know we get into the Canada Basketball story with Shawn and Savannah. Shawn talks about his time with the iconic 2000 Sydney Olympics SMNT and why that group remains a special team to this day. Shawn talks about seeing both  Savvy and Syla Swords playing for Canada Basketball; especially seeing Syla play at the 2024 Paris Olympics for Canada Basketball. Savvy tells us why she loves to play for Canada and how much she loved her time with the program this past summer at the 2024 U17 WC. Dwight remains fully connected to the game more than ever and lets us know what is keeping him busy in basketball right now. Dwight reflects on his time in the game at all stages of his life and career; starting from his childhood in Montreal, Quebec. Dwight tells us about basketball coming into his life, his time at Dawson College and getting his first opportunity and moment with the SMNT for Canada Basketball. Dwight talks about his time at Siena College and Florida Tech in the NCAA and how his pro career started. Dwight tells us about his 10 year tenure with Canada Basketball and how much he loved his teammates, coaches and everyone involved with the Program. As Dwight dives more into Canada Basketball he tells us how he knew Steve Nash would be an incredible player and one of the all time greats. The names of players and coaches for Canada Basketball  Dwight references throughout the conversation are truly incredible and inspiring. And Dwight gives us some incredible names for his Top and Favorite 5 for Canada Basketball. Shelley shares with us how basketball started for her and how she found herself playing at Laurentian University. Shelley tells us about watching and supporting Shawn and the rest of the 2000 Sydney Olympic team and why that group remains special today. The Swords family made the move from Sudbury to Long Island, NY, for everyone to pursue basketball even further and Shelley tells us how that move and decision unfolded.  Shelley describes what playing for Canada Basketball means to her family and why it's something they cherish. Miranda tells us about being a Saunders Sabre and eventually taking her education and game to Pepperdine University and becoming a Wave. Miranda had an outstanding career at Pepperdine; culminating in her recent induction into the Pepperdine Hall of Fame. Miranda gives her thoughts on the NCAA landscape right now with the NIL and transfer portal factors.Miranda takes her game pro which included time in Turkey, an opportunity with the Tulsa Shock in the WNBA and then playing several seasons in France; with Miranda telling us what makes the French League a great place to play for professional womens' basketball.And you know we dive into Canada Basketball with Miranda! Miranda tells us what playing for Canada meant to her; being a 3 time Olympian and having the honour of being named the Flag Bearer for Canada at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Jackson Rowe, the hustler, pulls up on Canada Hoops ! Jackson sits down with your boy Matty to share his basketball story thus far. Jackson is back home in Toronto after a strong, successful season with the Santa Cruz Warriors in the NBA G League. Jackson tells us his plans for the offseason as he gets ready to train for his upcoming season as he returns to Santa Cruz to crack open his spot in the NBA. JR takes us back to when he was growing up in Toronto as he learned the game from his Mother, the legend Phil Dixon and others. Jackson talks about his idols in basketball as he was a young man; which included the Toronto native and icon Jamaal Magloire. Jackson takes his game to Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah, to test his skills against the best competition. While at Wasatch Jackson starts to get more recruitment for NCAA Division 1 basketball; eventually committing to Cal State Fullerton. As a Titan Jackson makes an impact and elevated his game to eventually turn pro. JR starts his pro journey seeing stops in France, Sweden and Germany. Jackson played in the CEBL with the Ottawa Blackjacks and JR talks about the importance of the CEBL for Canadian basketball players and community. And you know we talk Canada Basketball with Jackson. JR talks about what playing for Canada means to him and his family; some of his closest teammates and friends and who he’d love to suit up with for Canada Basketball. Allison McNeill, former Head Coach of the SWNT for Canada Basketball and one of the all time great coaches in Canadian basketball, pulls up on Canada Hoops! Allison sits down with your boy Matty to share her basketball story. Allison lets us know what she has been doing since retirement; although she is still connected to the game and tells us that in some way basketball will always be a part of her life. Allison talks about the state and impact of womens' basketball right now and how she knew this time would come. Allison takes us back to growing up in Princeton and Salmon Arm, BC, working for her family business at a young age while learning and loving basketball. Allison moves from Princeton to Salmon Arm to play the game and meets her lifelong friend; the legendary Bev Smith. Allison talks about her time as a Jewel before she heads to Laurentian University to become a Voyageur. Allison won two National Championships at Laurentian before moving to the University of Oregon to re-unite with Bev Smith. After her time as a Duck Allison starts her pro career before she ends up as the Head Coach at Simon Fraser University. After a successful 13 year tenure at SFU Allison heads back to Oregon again to join Bev as the associate Head Coach for the Ducks.In 2002 Allison is named the Head Coach of the SWNT for Canada Basketball. Allison would lead the SWNT for 10 years ; taking the Program from 22nd to 8th in the world rankings. Allisons' time as the Head Coach of the SWNT culminated with qualifying for and competing in the 2012 London Olympics. Allison gives us great insight on Canada Basketball during her tenure and shares her thoughts on the Program now and where the SWNT can potentially go on the world stage. And you know Allison drops a historic Top 5 of all time for Canada Basketball on us. It was a privilege to sit down with Allison and hear her stories. Jade was motivated to compete and improve as she looked to prove herself as the best player in the province. Jade talks fondly of her time at Martin Leboldus and the relationships she formed as a Golden Sun. Jade tells us how about her recruitment as she looked to play at the next level and why she ultimately chose to stay at home to represent her city and play at the University of Regina. Jade  talks about her career thus far as a Cougar and what motivates her to excel. Jade played for Canada Basketball in the summer of 2023 as she represented the Program with the 2023 GLOBL JAM Team. Jade talks about what playing in the red and white has meant to her and why she is driven to play for Canada Basketball in the future. Jasmine tells Matty how basketball got started for her as she always found herself in a gymnasium while her family was either coaching or playing. Jazz tells us about her recruiting process and how she narrowed her choice down to Villanova. Jasmine talks about playing for Canada Basketball and what it has meant to her and the rest of her family. Jasmine talks about playing at the 2023 FIBA U19 World Cup, playing for Head Coach Carly Clarke and how Jazz and the rest of the players in the age group will be key pieces for Canada Basketball for years to come. Jasmine talks about training and competing with the SWNT, how her time with the SWNT has developed her game, learning from some of her idols and seeing what it takes to play at that high, professional level. Denise tells us how basketball took shape for her growing up in Port Cartier, Quebec and ultimately following her dream to play for the National Team and playing professionally in France. Denise talks about how she landed her job with Canada Basketball in 1998 when the Program only consisted of 4 employees at the time. Denise speaks on how Canada Basketball has grown and developed throughout her time with the Program and the strategies she implemented to help launch the SWNT for Canada Basketball onto the world stage. Denise speaks on the rising talent in Canada in the women's program, the commitment and sacrifice demonstrated by the SWNT players and how she identified Victor Lapena as the next Head Coach of the SWNT for Canada Basketball. Denise talks about the upcoming Olympic Qualification tournament for the SWNT in Hungary, planning ahead for the summer with the Paris Olympics in mind and what representing Canada Basketball has meant to her personally throughout her career. Michelle sits down with your boy Matty to share her basketball story thus far. Michelle tells us how she is doing as she goes through her rehab and training after suffering an ACL injury right at the end of the FIBA 3X3 season; letting us know that she will be ready to go for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics! Michelle tells Matty about growing up in Edmonton, Alberta, playing basketball alongside her twin sister Katherine, another Canada Hoops guest. Michelle talks about her role model and older sister Andrea who helped show Michelle what playing basketball at a high level looked like right from within the Plouffe family. Michelle tells Matty about her time at Harry Ainlay High School, NEDA and starting to get recruitment to play NCAA Division 1 basketball. Michelle talks about her decision to attend the University of Utah; where she would have a tremendous career as a Ute. Michelle shares her memories from her time at Utah and why her time with the SWNT during her career at Utah really helped elevate her game and perspective. Michelle talks about going pro, getting drafted into the WNBA by the Seattle Storm and her camp experience in Seattle before heading overseas.
