252: Being Highly Sensitive Is a Superpower - Embrace and Leverage It
Being a sensitive person can often feel overwhelming, especially in today’s fast-paced, hyper-connected world. And these challenges are frequently compounded by the many misconceptions that people have about sensitivity as a trait. As a sensitive person himself, our guest today, Andre Sólo, is deeply familiar with these challenges and has spent the better part of his career dedicated to shedding light on what it truly means to be a highly sensitive person (HSP) and what we all need to understand better about sensitivity. Through his work and new book, Andre is making profound contributions to those of us who identify as sensitive (even if we don’t know it yet). He is the co-founder of the website, Highly Sensitive Refuge, the world’s largest online community for sensitive people, and recently co-authored the extremely helpful book The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World. Andre is also a researcher and speaker and serves as Chief Make-It-Happen Officer of Introvert, Dear, a supportive community and resource for introverted and sensitive individuals alike.  Tuning in today, you’ll learn all about what it means to be a sensitive individual, including why HSPs tend to be creative, empathetic, and highly conscientious, and why it’s so easy for them to become overstimulated. Andre goes on to unpack some of the problematic messaging that society regularly gives to sensitive boys and girls, and how this can result in people suppressing and hiding their sensitivity, rather than embracing it as one of their greatest strengths. Our conversation also explores how sensitive children are impacted by their upbringing and environment, and why the best thing you can do as the parent of a sensitive child is to accept and encourage them just as they are. Today’s episode is filled with fascinating insights into what it means to move through the world as a sensitive person and provides a helpful guide for what we can do to better understand and support sensitive individuals, allowing them to embrace and leverage their unique superpowers. As a highly sensitive person myself, I’m grateful to Andre for his groundbreaking work in this field. To learn more about this deeply human trait, and how it can shape a person's entire identity, be sure to tune in for our conversation with Andre Sólo!   Key Highlights From This Episode:  Understanding the traits of a highly sensitive person (HSP), and the misconceptions that many people have about sensitive people. The concept of happiness as been explored in countless ways over the past years, yet it seems that modern society has been misguided when it comes to understanding the true drivers of happiness and well-being. For the past 20 years, Dr. Marc Schulz has been involved in a groundbreaking 80-year study of happiness – in fact, the world’s longest scientific study of happiness – and he joins us today to share his findings. The renewed focus he’s brought to the study is one that investigates relationships and their powerful effect on our overall well-being. Marc is a practicing therapist with postdoctoral training in health and clinical psychology at Harvard Medical School and is the associate director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development. Marc explains the kinds of relationships essential for our well-being and provides an example demonstrating the remarkable impact of connection. “The good life” encompasses more than just happiness, and today, we are encouraged to lean in and experience the full spectrum of life, for the sake of our overall well-being. 250: When Masculine Norms Shape Leadership Norms and How That's Damaging, with Ludo Gabriele
Bringing nuance and depth to conversations around diversity, equity and inclusion is a challenging but essential step in making true progress towards building work cultures that work for all.  Ludo Gabriele has dedicated his work and energy to this task and he is on Finding Brave today to explore some of the lesser-examined but essential aspects of the impact of patriarchal systems and the ways in which masculine norms have shaped leadership norms, and why that is damaging.  Ludo is currently the Senior Director of MARC Branding (Men Advocating Real Change) at Catalyst, which is a nonprofit organization focused on accelerating progress for women through workplace inclusion. He is also the founder of Woke Daddy, which he created as a means to share thoughts on fatherhood and masculinity. This conversation with Ludo is jam-packed with powerful ideas and helpful ways to understand and implement them. Ludo unpacks why meaningful progress cannot be achieved without involving the majority group (and in corporations today, that typically means men), as well as how we can begin to create more inclusive cultures that transcend issues such as sexism and discrimination. One of the most powerful points Ludo makes is about the specific barriers that are in place today that prevent men from engaging in the necessary changes so many people (both women and men) wish to see.  Our guest highlights some of the most important questions that we need to ask and underlines the need for doing deep work to pave the way for real progress. He also explains exactly why better workplaces for women are better workplaces for everyone. Tune in today for a huge dose of insight and inspiration from an individual deeply familiar with the brave work required to engage in truly successful leadership approaches and build a better and more equitable future for all.    Key Highlights From This Episode: Ludo spells out what masculine norms are and their impact on organizations. [04:46] The challenges for men to overcome or revise the negative impact of patriarchal systems. [15:15] Exploring the learning programs and conversations that Ludo hosts. [24:13] How sport functions as a means for men to connect in ways that are difficult otherwise. [31:28] The power of empathy; Ludo talks about intentionally developing our capacity. [35:05] Some of the first steps towards change, and the need for introspection. [39:55] Overcoming the fear of being wrong and or being challenged in the current cultural climate. [43:52] The role of courage in advocacy and allyship. Legacy leadership isn’t just a leadership style or a list of things to do, or showing up pretending you have all the answers. 247: What Fearless Leadership Really Looks Like, with Adrian Koehler
Are you playing not to lose or are you playing to actually win and create what you deeply long to in life and in your work? As our guest today, Adrian Koehler explains in this episode, we are all capable of being powerful, confident, secure, and fearless leaders. But in order to do so, we have to be willing to embrace the fear and risk that comes with the unknown. Adrian Koehler is a top leadership engagement expert and Founder and Senior Partner at the coaching firm Take New Ground. His approach is based on the idea that rather than aiming to reach a particular emotional state (“I want to be less scared,” for example), if we want to reach our fullest potential as leaders, we need to aim to be courageous instead (“I’m going to take the leap despite my fear”).  Drawing on his background in philanthropy, ministry, activism, and medicine, Adrian thrives in extreme environments and finds comfort in difficult conversations —in fact, his passion for human performance has taken him around the globe, serving people in times of crisis, transformation, and stalemates. Over the last decade, Adrian has trained and developed leaders at NIKE, Virgin Hyperloop One, Jeni’s Ice Cream, Herschel Supply Co., Oprah Winfrey Network, Gavin DeBecker & Associates, Siegel & Gale, UCLA and elsewhere. Adrian is also the co-host of two engaging podcasts: Raising The Bar with Drybar Founder Alli Webb and The Naked Leadership Podcast with Take New Ground Sr. Partner Dan Tocchini.  Being human means having insecurities, but what we do with those insecurities and how mentally approach them is up to us. If you are ready to stop denying what is possible for you and start taking greater responsibility for your actions so your visions can become reality, tune in today for a conversation that will inspire you to be real, powerful (and if this word makes you feel uncomfortable, you need to hear Adrian’s definition of it), and of course, brave!    Key Highlights From This Episode:   Introducing today’s guest, leadership engagement expert, Adrian Koehler. [02:24]Four of our core human desires and what they signify. [04:41]The unpredictable nature of our emotions and why we shouldn’t aim towards a particular emotional state. [05:40]What it truly looks like to be courageous. [06:20]Adrian explains specifically what it takes to be a true leader. [10:04]A mantra that helped Adrian get through one of the darkest times of his life. [10:29]The link between power and vitality, and why truly powerful people desire for other people to be powerful too. 245: How to Eliminate Gender Bias in Employment Practices
Although we have made strides in advancing the professional lives of women and minorities in the last several decades, there are still key areas where companies need to improve their employment practices.  Our guest today, Jean Back, is an employment attorney with Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt and has over 25 years of experience in helping employers navigate and solve a range of complicated problems and scenarios. Her experience is broad and covers litigation as well as mediation and settlement of employment and business tort claims. She has also conducted training for managers and employees in employment compliance and is experienced in all areas of state and federal employment, wage and hour, discrimination, and leave laws. Today, you’ll hear Jean unpack the key distinctions between overt and unconscious bias and how they can come into play in a wide range of employment practices. She explains how unconscious biases show up in the hiring and layoff process and what can be done to address these biases. Jean also discusses how to cultivate a bias-free work culture and how to improve your own organization’s DEI practices today.  Even the most progressive employers (who approach hiring with the best of intentions) can have blindspots when it comes to unconscious bias. And while we all may have unconscious biases, recognizing them is the first step in the journey to change them. To learn how to avoid these stumbling blocks to a fair and equitable workforce and what you can personally do to build a workplace that works for all, don’t miss this episode.    Key Highlights From This Episode:   The distinctions between overt and unconscious bias. [03:40]Examples of how job descriptions can signal bias through their language. [06:25]How our brains use unconscious bias and prejudice to protect us. 244: Why Burnout Is An Epidemic and 3 Steps to Feeling Better Now

244: Why Burnout Is An Epidemic and 3 Steps to Feeling Better Now
The festive season is upon us! And while this time of year is traditionally dedicated to friends, family, and celebrations, it is often accompanied by stress and looming deadlines. It is also the time of year when many of us feel the very real effects of burnout, especially after laboring under consistently high levels of stress for most of the year. Today on the solo podcast episode, I take a closer look at the prevalence of burnout in modern culture today. I break down the reasons why I believe burnout to be an epidemic today (and research supports that belief) and offer advice on what can be done to address and prevent it. In my recent Forbes article Why Burnout Is An Epidemic and 3 Powerful Ways to Address it, I outline my observations and provide strategies and tips for shifting our behaviors and habits in ways that pave the way for reduced stress and burnout, and allow for more self-care, and emotional and physical restoration. Listeners who wish to do further exploration on this topic and learn more about how to “find brave” every day to build a happier, more rewarding and fulfilling life and career on your own authentic terms, can find helpful support in my latest book, The Most Powerful You. Today, you’ll hear a breakdown of how a confluence of unprecedented factors — such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise in remote work — have contributed to new highs in burnout rates. I unpack some key psychological concepts that important to understand, including perfectionistic over-functioning and its effects, and I explain how these habits affect our loved ones and contribute significantly to burnout. I also discuss how we can learn to identify what is within our control (and what isn’t) and begin to shift our habits and address burnout head on, in our own daily lives.   It may seem that there is simply too much outside of our control to enact meaningful change within our lives. It's really a supply and demand equation that's going. There's not enough content creators on the app right now. But the number of users who are downloading TikTok is just skyrocketing.” — Andrew Gottlieb [0:11:34] “You have a unique moment in time to capitalize on building a follower base on TikTok right now.” — Andrew Gottlieb [0:11:59] “Rein in your FOMO. And just be aware that eventually over time, Tik Tok is going to have an older demographic.” — Andrew Gottlieb [0:15:46] “I think when you have a good reputation, you have good branding, and good marketing that's getting your business out there in a really genuine and authentic manner, it allows the business to come to you versus you having to be on the hunt, going door to door.” — Andrew Gottlieb [0:29:30]   Watch our Finding Brave episodes on YouTube! 238: Anti-Time Management: The Power of Time-Tipping To Achieve Your Goals, with Richie Norton
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Instead of working and giving my life and my family the breadcrumbs of time, why don’t I turn it over? My family, my time, whatever it is that is important to you. It could be work or whatever you actually love. If you do that, here’s what happens: you think you won’t have time to do the things that actually have to get done to work and get paid. Not true. You actually [get more] creative in getting those things done in less time.” — Richie Norton Are you looking to find your motivation, prioritize your ideals, and create a flexible work-life lifestyle that allows you to enjoy expansive freedom? Today’s Finding Brave guest believes that you can do all of the above, no matter how busy or successful you are, using what he calls Anti-Time Management! Today, you’ll learn about the power of Time Tipping from award-winning author and serial entrepreneur, Richie Norton. As an executive coach to CEOs, Richie has been featured in Forbes, Bloomberg Businessweek, Inc., Entrepreneur, and the Huffington Post. Pacific Business News recognized Richie as one of the Top Forty Under 40 ‘Best and Brightest Young Businessmen’ in Hawaii, and he is considered one of the world’s leading thinkers and is included in Marshall Goldsmith’s Top 100 coaches community. He is also the CEO and Cofounder of PROUDUCT, an INC. 5000 company and a global entrepreneurship solution that helps businesses go from idea to market with full-service sourcing, product strategy, and end-to-end supply chain, and the author of several books, including Anti-Time Management, The Power of Starting Something Stupid, and Résumés Are Dead and What to Do About It.  Richie and I go back nine years to when I wrote about his second great book, The Power of Starting Something Stupid, for my Forbes blog in 2013. In today’s episode, he shares some of the valuable frameworks from his latest book, Anti-Time Management, and how you can implement them to stop managing your time and start prioritizing your attention. For poignant and practical advice from someone who has learned the value of living in a way that helps him lean into his fears, make a difference, and live without regret (and wants to help you do the same), make sure not to miss this powerful conversation with Richie Norton!   Key Points From This Episode: Insight into why Richie decided to write this book and why now. [06:46]Work for meaning, not money: what to do when the success you’ve had no longer works for you. [08:54]How you can use Time Tipping to learn to value your time, not time your values. [14:29]Overcome fears about money by rethinking how you get paid, not how much. [17:10]A look at how you can benefit if you stop managing time and start prioritizing attention. [19:20]Employing the concept of ‘project stacking’ to align your attention with your goals. [24:39]An understanding of Richie’s prolifics, practices, purposes, and payments framework. Become The Most Powerful You! In reading a great deal about leadership today, and interviewing top leadership experts, I’m recognizing a disappointing trend - that the general concept and understanding of leadership has become so vague and watered down that most of it isn’t helpful at all, and it’s not suited to a majority of women who want to lead differently. The Most Powerful You training goes deeper. It helps you recognize and understand more about yourself as a person and the leader you want to be, then take empowering, transformative actions to operate in your role in a way that takes your leadership and your career higher, making the impact you dream to. 237: Summer Pick #5: 5 Ways to Use Rejection To Fuel Your Success
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Now that I’m older, I truly think about it differently. Every single rejection you get, I have learned, if you listen and observe carefully without all the defensiveness and the ego getting hysterical, it can unlock amazing doors for you.” - Kathy Caprino  Rejection, both from others and from inner selves, is a common issue faced by the many thousands of women I have heard from and worked with. This is why in this episode of Finding Brave, I talk about the different aspects of rejection and how we can handle it in a new way - one that fuels and expands our success instead of crushing it.  How you handle and feel about rejection will directly determine the degree to which you can experience growth, fulfillment and excitement on the journey to your goals. Some time ago, I posted an image with a quote about rejection on LinkedIn, and it resonated with many folks, with over 55,000 views and 1,100 likes in just a few days.   It may be hard to believe sometimes, but rejection can and will lead to amazing success if you approach it the right way. Today I share my own personal, and often painful, experiences around being rejected, and I share 5 positive lessons rejection can offer that can fuel your success, rather than demoralize you and set you back.  As always I would love to hear how this episode resonates with you, and I’d love to hear how you’ve overcome rejection in ways that opened door to more thrilling opportunities that you’re grateful for. Please reach out to me by email, or on social media via LinkedIn, or on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest to say hello and share your ideas!   Highlights from this Episode: The ways I reacted to rejection when I was younger versus how I think about it today [6:07]How rejection can lead to making valuable changes to your idea, project or product [9:17]Why the timing, and actually being ready for success, matters so much [14:36]The reason I’m such a fan of research regarding new products and programs but why your friends shouldn’t be the ones you turn to for it [16:47]The way to approach feedback so that you’re not limiting your own success unintentionally [18:57]How you can begin to recognize how amazing you are and why this is necessary to live the best life you can [21:42]What to identify in order to share a more authentic self [24:28]How to know when “perfectionistic overfunctioning” is holding you back [30:02]   Resources Mentioned:  Kathy’s Career Path Self-Assessment Kathy’s Close Your Power Gaps private coaching program Kathy’s article – 3 Key Steps to Moving from Self-Rejection Toward Self-Love Kathy’s TEDx Talk “Time to Brave Up” Kathy video and post: What Is Feminism and Why Do So Many Men and Women Hate It Kathy’s Forbes post: How Being Raised by a Narcissist Affects Your Self-Esteem Kathy’s Forbes interview: What Selling Three Million Copies of ‘The Dance of Anger’ Has Taught Harriet Lerner Kathy’s Forbes interview: What the Most Rejected Person in the World Can Teach About Triumph and Creating Work We Love featuring Daniel Seddiqui     CHECK OUT MY “MOST POWERFUL YOU” VIDEO COURSE! 236: Summer Pick #4: How to Have Those Difficult But Crucial Conversations with Friends and Family, with Joseph Grenny
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “The goal of the conversation is not to convince. It’s not to compel, and it’s not to control. It’s not to try to get the other person to think something different. As soon as we believe somebody is trying to control us in that kind of way, we resist. So the very effort to convince, it makes you less convincing.” – Joseph Grenny Contrary to how many people feel in our world today, it is possible to tell the truth and avoid alienating a friend or colleague or engendering terrible and painful conflict. With so much distrust among family, friends, colleagues and our leaders, it’s vital to not to take the two standard approaches – being silent or violent — on core issues but instead, we need to learn the essential skills behind expressing yourself candidly yet cordially.  Today’s Finding Brave expert guest reveals how it’s not having different opinions that’s the problem in our conflicts, rather it’s how and why we express those opinions, and the approach we take before even entering the conversation.  Joseph Grenny is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, dynamic keynote speaker, and leading social scientist for business performance. Joseph has spoken at some of the world’s premier leadership conferences. His books have been translated into 28 languages, are available in 36 countries, and have generated results for 300 of the Fortune 500. I had the honor of interviewing Joseph and David Maxfield in my Forbes blog in 2015 in a piece on Gender Bias Is Real: Women’s Perceived Competency Drops Significantly When Judged as Being Forceful, on their groundbreaking research on gender bias, and I’ve often quoted the information that their research uncovered that proved gender bias is not imagined, it’s real – and their research showed on how women’s perceived competency and perceived worth drops exponentially more than men’s when they are are perceived as forceful or assertive. I’ve featured their work in my TEDx talk Time to Brave Up, and in my new book The Most Powerful You and my Most Powerful You Course which is why I’m so excited to speak with Joseph today and bring you his expert insights and perspectives on navigating crucial conversations. This episode is part of our “Summer Pick series” which features a selection of the most popular and downloaded shows we’ve aired in the past several years.   Highlights from this Episode: Why Joseph was first drawn to topics around communication and crucial conversations [5:36] The real reasons he feels that many of the conversations happening today are so volatile [9:01] Why your internal and external approach to a conversation will often be the key to achieving a successful outcome with the other person [12:57] The way that our fears, or the threats that we perceive, will impact how a conversation unfolds [15:22] A technique he recommends to disarm perceived threats by both parties [16:06] The 3 different types of stories we tell ourselves, and how to begin mastering them today [20:30] A time that Joseph made a stand to have his voice heard, and the role that setting ground rules beforehand had in doing this [23:44] What the goal of every conversation should be, and what we shouldn’t be trying to do [27:24] How I was able to diffuse a difficult situation that I faced in my professional career [32:18]   For More Information: https://josephgrenny.com/  www.vitalsmarts.com https://www.linkedin.com/company/vitalsmarts/  https://twitter.com/vitalsmarts https://www.instagram.com/vitalsmarts/    Resources Mentioned: Ready to become more confident, powerful and successful in work you love?   CHECK OUT MY “MOST POWERFUL YOU” VIDEO COURSE! 235: Summer Pick #3: Do Less to Live and Work Happier and Better, with Kate Northrup
What brings you joy? What makes you feel energized? What makes you, you? Loving yourself starts with understanding yourself and learning to accept yourself for who you are, rather than fixating on who you think you “should” be. Self-love is one of the most powerful things that we, as human beings, can do to enhance our lives. Today’s guest is Kate Northrup; entrepreneur, bestselling author, speaker, and mother who has built a multimedia digital empire with her husband which supports hundreds of thousands of ambitious women to light up the world without burning out!  When it comes to work, less is more! According to research, working 49 hours+ per week is linked to a decline in mental health. This negatively impacts productivity because happier people are more productive. During this episode, Kate explains the personal experiences that led her to discover how to do less to live better. If you truly want to help your team, staff and organization become “The Most Powerful We,” this is the right training for you.  Take this course individually or bring it to your workforce and teams today! 234: Summer Pick #2: How Confidence is Key: How to Get It, Build It and Keep It
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Whether you’re on an athletic team, a sales force, or a symphony orchestra, you better be honest about what you think about yourself. What you think about yourself and what you think about all the things that happen day by day, that’s what constitutes your confidence.” - Dr. Nate Zinsser This Summer, I’m delighted to offer you our “Summer Pick” series which brings you a selection of the most popular listener favorites from the past few years of shows. Today’s episode originally aired as a two-part installment on January 27th and February 3rd, 2022. Hope you enjoy them! Confidence is a character trait that has relatively little to do with what happens to you, but rather it’s a function of how you think. Today’s Finding Brave guest reveals how you can change your level of confidence, but first you must be aware of certain things. You absolutely can develop confidence for any situation that you care to, and our guest shares the ways that confident performers think differently from the average person in order to do this. Dr. Nate Zinsser is an expert in the psychology of human performance who consults for individuals and organizations seeking a competitive edge. Nate’s latest book, The Confident Mind: A Battle-Tested Guide for Unshakable Performance, hit shelves January 2022, and has been endorsed by two-time Super Bowl Champion and MVP Eli Manning, bestselling authors Jon Krakauer and Steven Pressfield, and US Olympic Bobsled Head Coach Mike Kohn. Nate was a regular consultant to the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Giants for twelve seasons and has been a keynote speaker for General Electric, Facebook, McDonald’s, Staples, UBS, Major League Baseball, the NBA, and many more, as well as a consultant for the FBI Academy, the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, (mentoring four Olympic medalists), the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, and the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. Since 1992, he has directed a cutting-edge applied sport psychology program at the United States Military Academy’s Center for Enhanced Performance, personally conducting over seventeen thousand individual training sessions and seven hundred team training sessions for cadets seeking the mental edge for athletic, academic, and military performance. He also helped launch the highly successful magazine Sports Illustrated for Kids and was presented with an American Library Association award for his 1991 children’s book Dear Dr. Psych: A Kid’s Guide to Handling Sports Problems. I’m happy to re-air this important mini-series on confidence, to give you the action steps and mindset shifts needed to overcome obstacles that often get in the way of building our self-confidence.  To learn more about today's guest, visit: https://natezinsser.com/
