287: Navigating Neurodiversity: Key Organizational Steps for Embracing Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Other Neurological Differences
One in five people is estimated to be neurodivergent, yet efforts to achieve large-scale neuroinclusion in the workplace have largely failed due to superficial “check-the-box” strategies. Cognitive scientist, author, board director, business leader, and neurodivergent employer Dr. Maureen Dunne knows from lived experience and extensive research that we can harness the power of neurodiverse talent to help organizations build thriving cultures. Her national bestselling book, The Neurodiversity Edge, introduces a transformative framework for addressing “the most important human resources opportunity of the 21st century.” As you’ll discover in today’s episode, creating a neuroinclusive workplace isn't just the right thing to do; it can also be a massive competitive advantage. Join us as Maureen highlights common misunderstandings about neuroinclusion and explains why we need to break free from society’s neurotypical script to embrace the strengths of brains that work differently. She also reveals how organizations can take a values-driven approach to build a culture of sustained authentic inclusion and leverage the enormous untapped talent pool defined by cognitive differences. For actionable strategies that can transform your organization's approach to inclusion and unlock the potential of neurodiverse talent, tune in today!   Key Highlights From This Episode: An important definition of neurodiversity as a strengths-based framework. Why not choose the perspective that brings more peace, love, and joy?” — Finnian Kelly [0:37:07]   Longer Quotes: “If you ask [someone what the most defining moments were] in their life, they’ll always talk about the hard times and the challenges – If we know that [there’s] going to be something in the future that you look back on and go, ‘Oh, this was actually the greatest growth opportunity of my life’ – then, in the present moment, when we start getting that sensation of ‘This is hard. This is happening to me,’ that should be a moment where we flip it and go, ‘Oh, wow. This is my moment. 283: How to Ask The Right Questions To Unlock Wisdom, Support and Opportunity
Why is it so hard for many of us to ask the right questions and make the right choices? As the co-CEO of Transcend, a nationally recognized innovation organization, and today’s guest, Jeff Wetzler has leveraged his expertise in learning and human potential to develop a game-changing approach to smarter decisions, more creative solutions, and deeper relationships by asking different kinds of questions that unlock possibility and connection. Through a five-step process, Jeff teaches how to ask the right questions to create personal and professional growth. He joins us today to talk about his new book, ASK: Tap Into the Hidden Wisdom of People Around You for Unexpected Breakthroughs In Leadership and Life, and to share his personal journey to asking, learning, and connecting more deeply. Delving even deeper, we explore a new definition of curiosity as an act of care. We also unpack what happens when we lose our connection to compassion, how to remain rooted in non-judgment to create a safe space for others, engage in meaningful reflection and reconnection, and much more! 282: Power Gap #7: Allowing Past Pain and Challenge To Continue to Shape You
(Part of Kathy’s series The Most Powerful You)
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Podcasts in Careers!   Please note: This is a special rerun of Episode 130. “You are not your past. You are all of it, your past, present, and future. So do the work to release the shame, the humiliation, and the negative judgments you have about yourself. Release yourself.” – Kathy Caprino Over the past several years on Finding Brave, I’ve offered some key information about what I’ve observed are the 7 most damaging power and confidence gaps along with key chapters from my latest book, The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss. Some time back, I offered a series of 7 podcasts dedicated to these gaps that negatively impact 98% of professional women today, and 90% of men, preventing them from reaching their highest potential, and their happiest, most rewarding success and fulfillment. In this 7th installment of that series, I share the power gap that may be closest to my own heart and soul. I’m talking about how we unwittingly allow past trauma, pain and challenges that we’ve experienced to continue to shape and define us. And this unwanted pain and shame often brings to our lives unwanted experiences. I have lived this in such a deep way (and continue to work on it - as you’ll hear in my upcoming interview, Episode #286 with Finnian Kelly - who helped me right on the show uncover a very painful trauma memory from when I was a teen, and connect that to some mindset (and behavioral) challenges I still have around money, work and safety. I never fully recognized this Power Gap (of how our past continues to shape and define us unless we gain fuller awareness of the trauma and pain events/experiences and work committedly to overcome and release them) until I became a therapist and started doing the work on myself and with others to help us heal. Unfortunately, life can hurt us badly sometimes and leave deep scars, and no one is immune. Every single one of us has experienced some form of pain, suffering, sadness, isolation, rejection, and trauma in our lifetimes. Many have experienced and witnessed things that alter how they see the world and operate within it. Sometimes, pain and hardship make us close down and stop trusting others. Other times, it makes us turn our pain into rage and violence against the world. Yet some people, while crushed by their pain for a time, are able to find a way to become more of who they really are at their core – more loving, compassionate, hopeful, helpful, generous, insightful, brave, committed, and resilient and joy-filled  — through all of it. And some are fortunate to know exactly how to turn their emotional challenges into new ways to be of service in the world so they can uplift others while expanding themselves. I sincerely hope that my “The Most Powerful You” series (for content on the other 6 gaps, check out Episodes #124 through #129) is enlightening, and in conjunction with my book and video training program, can help you uncover any power and confidence gaps that may be holding you back at this very moment. As always, thank you for listening and I would be so happy to hear your feedback on not just this episode, but the entire series and The Most Powerful You book. Remember that tremendous success, joy, and reward aren’t just reserved for a handful of people, but everyone, including you. You are worthy of an amazing life and career, and it’s waiting for you. If you’d like to know which, if any, of the Power Gaps you may be facing today, take my quick Power Gap quiz.   Highlights from this Episode: How trauma appears in our lives, and why it’s so damaging to hold onto [4:10]What trauma really is, and how every single one of us has experienced it [4:45]How becoming aware of your trauma will benefit all aspects of your life including your career [6:50]A powerful example of someone who has transformed her trauma into growth and a life of service to others [8:40]The impact and harm your childhood can continue to have in your life as you get older [17:00]Why insight into our trauma alone isn’t enough to overcome it and what is needed to move forward to healing [18:02]Examples of common workplace trauma that I often see in the people that I work with [18:20]What steps you can take to start getting on what I call “the brave healing path” [20:55]The specific questions to ask yourself as you embark on your own journey to awareness [33:30]   For More Information: https://kathycaprino.com/ https://mostpowerfulyou.com/videotraining https://www.linkedin.com/in/kathycaprino https://www.facebook.com/ElliaCommunications https://twitter.com/kathycaprino https://www.instagram.com/kathycaprino/   READY FOR A BIG CHANGE – AND HUGE BOOST – IN WHAT’S POSSIBLE FOR YOU – IN A REWARDING AND THRILLING CAREER YOU LOVE? 280: Networking Is More Effective Than Traditional Job Search - How To Make It Easier
Today, we’re delighted to welcome back return guest, Austin Belcak, who joined us way back on episode five to talk about how to land a dream job at the salary you deserve, as well on episode 89 where he shared his insights on building an exceptional resume that gets real results. Through his personal experiences, Austin has developed a uniquely effective job search system that helped him go from being a new grad with a biology degree (and a job in healthcare) to landing interviews at multiple tech companies, including Microsoft, where he ended up working for over five years and was promoted multiple times. Austin is the founder of Cultivated Culture, where he helps people secure jobs they’re passionate about, without relying on the need for traditional experience or online applications. The platform is a hugely valuable resource for job seekers and offers multiple free tools, including a resume builder and analyzer. He also hosts The Dream Job System Podcast where he shares bite-sized, highly actionable career advice. Additionally, Austin’s work has been featured in multiple publications including, Forbes, Business Insider, and Fast Co. Through his work he has helped thousands of job seekers earn roles at top companies like Google, Apple, and Amazon, without ever needing to apply online. In today’s conversation with Austin, we delve into the subject of networking, why he’s found it to be infinitely more effective than traditional job-searching methods, and how he developed a jobs system that could help others just like him. We unpack why traditional approaches proved particularly ineffective for him, why he needed advice from people with first-hand experience, and how he went about reaching out to those individuals who could give him the insights he needed to succeed. Our conversation also examines some of the most common misconceptions when it comes to networking and what can be done to address them.  Austin’s parting message emphasizes the importance of investing in yourself and actively creating things that other people will find interesting, before breaking down exactly how this will help your networking journey in the long run. His story serves as a powerful reminder that following your intuition and finding a braver path, will often be far more effective than sticking to more traditional routes. Join us today to hear all of Austin’s eye-opening insights as we discuss the nuances of networking and finding the job you truly want!    Key Points From This Episode:  Some background on today’s guest, Austin Belcak. [02:03] How Austin founded Cultivated Culture. [05:45] What made him reject traditional job search practices and try a different approach. 277: How We Can Survive and Thrive In An Age of Conflict
As many of us are seeing and experiencing firsthand, we’re living in a time of divisive politics and widespread conflict. While these conditions present difficult challenges, it’s also an opportunity for growth if we can find the courage and strength to engage in a new way. This is the belief of today’s inspiring guest, William Ury, who has dedicated his life to transforming conflicts from destructive impulses into opportunities for collaboration and growth. William is a renowned negotiator, anthropologist, and bestselling author whose insights and expertise have reshaped the way we approach conflict resolution. Among other top books he’s written, he is the co-author of  Getting to Yes, the world’s all-time bestselling book on negotiation with more than 15 million copies sold. William has served as a negotiator in many of the most challenging disputes of our time, having consulted for the White House, the State Department, and the Pentagon, as well as dozens of Fortune 500 companies. He is also the co-founder of Harvard’s distinguished Program on Negotiation, and has served as a negotiation adviser and mediator in conflicts ranging from Kentucky wildcat coal mine strikes to family feuds, from US partisan battles to wars in the Middle East, Colombia, Korea, and Ukraine.  His highly-anticipated new book, Possible: How We Survive (and Thrive) in an Age of Conflict, draws on decades of experience to shed light on some of the toughest conflicts of our time and how we can find a way forward. Today’s conversation takes us on a fascinating journey, from William’s first interest in negotiation and conflict resolution as a young child, to the central lessons he lays out in his books, to some of his most intense negotiating experiences with key figures, like Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. We learn about his Pathways to Possible method and how to transform seemingly impossible situations into creative and productive conversations before exploring the concept of self-mastery and engaging the third side in any conflict, and more. Join us as we explore William’s journey and his invaluable insights on navigating both personal and geopolitical conflicts with courage, self-mastery and compassion. Tune in to see conflict in a new light, tap into your innate potential, and approach animosity with curiosity. 276: Building Intergenerational Support To Move You Forward Fast
We are joined today by Hope Paterson, a global nomad, mother of two, education innovation specialist, and transformation coach. For two decades, Hope has been developing what she calls the Hope triangle: electrifying pathways for humans of all ages working at the intersection of education, innovation, and entrepreneurship. As a coach Hope is steadfast and supportive, walking alongside others as they move from old to new. She is also the founder of Hope Braintrust, a global think tank that hosts live events and collaborations. Her growing online network, the Hope Sparks Network, is a vibrant intergenerational community where people of all ages can connect to share their knowledge and experience. In today’s conversation with Hope, we learn how to embrace more bravery in our lives before delving into the concept of finding intergenerational allies. She shares how she first learned to flex her bravery muscles as a young girl, how her many years as an entrepreneur helped her build a network of brilliant individuals from across the world, and why she was determined to be the hopeful glue that brought them together. Hope also gives listeners her advice on how to put together and run an intergenerational advisory board, the type of individuals who are typically drawn to these communities, and why listening to your community members is essential. Join us today as we engage in a thought-provoking discussion on the power of global, intergenerational connections and the vital role these collectives play in growth, change, and transformation!   Key Points From This Episode: • An introduction to today’s guest, Hope Paterson. 275: Race Rules: What Your Black Friend Won't Tell You
Fatimah Gilliam is an author, lawyer, sought-after speaker, consultant, and founder of The Azara Group, a consulting firm that provides diversity and inclusion, leadership development, negotiation, and strategy consulting services to Fortune 500 corporations, senior executives leading billion-dollar businesses, and industry thought leaders. Her groundbreaking book, Race Rules: What Your Black Friend Won't Tell You, is a practical manual of the unwritten rules that can help readers navigate today’s racially polarized world. In short, it’s a ‘how-to’ manual for white people to be less racially offensive; enabling them to develop stronger and more respectful cross-racial friendships and professional relationships with people of color. Today, Fatimah joins us as “white America’s Black friend” to tell us what others won’t say to our faces nor share about perspectives of color on white behaviors, choices, and interactions. She shares deep, transformative insights from her book, which seeks to open the door to perspectives of color so white people can learn, make better choices, take different actions, and evolve with a diversifying society in the 21st century. This conversation is an excellent source of well-informed and hard-hitting advice for those looking to move beyond performative allyship and live their non-racist values, rather than just talk about them. As we discuss, this is ideal for anyone who wants to bring the unconscious forward to consciousness, so they can take new actions every day that will directly and powerfully address and combat racism both in our own lives and behaviors, and in the world we live in. 274: How Playing Competitive Sports Supports Women's Leadership Success
It’s been proven that playing competitive sports continues to contribute significantly to the success and leadership growth that women experience in later life and in their careers. Joining me to share her first-hand insights and key observations from her own career and from recent important research on this topic, is Lara Abrash, Chair of Deloitte US, the largest professional services organization in the United States. Originally drawn in by Deloitte’s social impact contributions, Lara began her time with the company 30 years ago, having held various leadership positions including Chair and Chief Executive Officer at Deloitte and Touche LLP. Working alongside over 170,000 professionals, Lara leads the Board of Directors with a purpose-driven mission to see diversity and inclusion at every level. To kick off the conversation, we dive into Deloitte’s pivotal study on the relationship between girls and women in competitive sports and leadership in the workplace later on in life. Lara shares her own experiences of playing softball, baseball, and tennis, revealing the essential skills she learned along the way. Next, we delve into the power of sports to foster skills development that women often don’t have the opportunity to develop elsewhere. We also discuss whether or not there is a place for emotional vulnerability in the workplace, and what changes when leaders are honest about their experiences. Join us today to hear all this and more!   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Introducing Lara Abrash, and her 30-year background leading up to her role as Chair of Deloitte US. 273: 6 Questions to Help You Create a Thrilling New Year

273: 6 Questions to Help You Create a Thrilling New Year
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! Note: This is a special airing of a “holiday favorite selection” and is a repeat of our Finding Brave holiday episode #208. “You just have to believe that there’s a higher version of you that you can tap into and that can access higher-level wisdom, insight, solutions, strategies, people, and connections. If you believe it, and if you believe it strongly, it’s amazing what happens in your life.” – Kathy Caprino  As we approach the end of another year, once again I’m happy to share this special “Holiday Selection,”  featuring some of the top Finding Brave episodes that have previously aired, to help you enter 2024 with even more bravery, inspiration, and motivation to pursue and achieve your most important and meaningful goals. Today, I’m excited to bring you an episode from late 2018, where I shared a helpful year-end strategy of reflection — the process of reflecting back on the past year in an in-depth, careful, and probing way, exploring all that you’ve learned and experienced, created, and also “failed” at. (Note: I don’t perceive “failure” the way many others do. I view it as a vital learning” opportunity — as an effective experience that, when viewed from a positive framework, helps us get much clearer on who we are, what we need to thrive, and what we  really want in our lives. This reflection process helps you connect in a powerful, deep way with your ultimate dreams and desires, and it highlights where you’ve been living “off course” – far away from what your most authentic self really wants. In this episode, I explore what I’ve found to be six essential reflection questions that are perfect for this time of year, to help us take stock, expand our gratitude and appreciation for all that we are today, and set the wheels in motion for shifting our approach to how we operate, communicate, and engage with others and with our core challenges and power gaps. This reflection process hatches important new revelations, and sets the stage for a brand new future. As always, be gentle and compassionate with yourself as you reflect, and remember that everything that’s happened can be used to bolster and uplift you, if you let it.  At the end of the show, I sing a little song to welcome in the New Year, from my heart to yours. I hope you enjoy it! I’d love to hear how your answering these six questions impacts you and what it reveals. And  I welcome your suggestions for any future topics or interviewees that you’re interested in hearing from. Please reach out to me by email, or on social media via LinkedIn, or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram and say hello and share your ideas! I wish you and your loved ones a very Happy New Year and I’m looking forward to connecting with you and serving up fresh, new episodes of Finding Brave in 2024 that will move you forward to create life and work as you dream it to be. Happy New Year! Thank you! * * * * * * FINALLY, PLEASE ASK YOUR ORGANIZATION TO BRING THE MOST POWERFUL YOU TRAINING TO YOUR WORKFORCE TODAY Is your organization committed to supporting the growth and success of both women and men in your workforce? If so, do they offer opportunities for powerful hands-on career growth and leadership training that addresses the real-world challenges that professional women face in the workplace and in their careers that are often different from what men typically face? I’m so thrilled that recently, a division of the United Nations has sponsored several memberships to The Most Powerful You course for their staff members and what a powerfully supportive move that is, to bring real-world effective career and leadership training to professionals in their work cultures, to help them thrive and succeed and the highest level possible in their work and projects. Coaching so many professionals and leaders as I do each year, I see that leadership and career growth training programs today are often NOT effective because they simply don’t go deep enough to address what really holds us back from thriving, believing in ourselves, recognizing our talents and abilities, communicating effectively, asking for what we need, saying “STOP!” to mistreatment, building a great support community, and making the true impact we long to. _______________   Need some great podcast production support? 271: How To Recognize and Release The Damaging Shame You Hold
Are your thoughts and actions regularly dictated by a harsh inner critic? Do you find yourself filled with feelings of unworthiness and that you are undeserving of love? If so, you may well be dealing with the symptoms of core shame. Our guest, David Jurasek, knows firsthand the devastating impact shame can have on your life and relationships, and he joins us today to shed light on this urgent topic. Drawing on his 25 years of experience as a mentor and therapist, David’s work is defined by his belief that your biggest source of sabotage is driven by core shame. He is the founder of Powerful and Loving, a community helping men and boys become powerful leaders who cultivate thriving relationships. Additionally, he is the author of My Heart Is A Muscle, a book that he wrote with the hopes of moving 500 men in the deepest way possible. In today’s conversation, we unpack the concept of core shame, where it tends to stem from, the devastating impact it can have on our lives, and how we can begin to release and heal from it. David opens up about the role that shame played in his life and explains why identifying its root cause is so important. We explore how our shame-based society prevents us from looking inward and the power of healthy relationships and community in helping us heal from shame. Our conversation also investigates the role of shame in our relationships and how we can break patterns of blame and criticism, before exploring how to go about dethroning your inner critic, followed by simple and effective techniques to help you process and let go of shame. Today’s episode is filled with profound insights and will give you a newfound understanding of the complexities of shame and its impact. We hope you’ll join us for a thought-provoking and empowering conversation on healing from shame and the power of love and community.   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Unpacking the concept of core shame, the impact of seeing yourself as unworthy or unlovable, and how this influences our lives and behavior.
