277: How We Can Survive and Thrive In An Age of Conflict
As many of us are seeing and experiencing firsthand, we’re living in a time of divisive politics and widespread conflict. While these conditions present difficult challenges, it’s also an opportunity for growth if we can find the courage and strength to engage in a new way. This is the belief of today’s inspiring guest, William Ury, who has dedicated his life to transforming conflicts from destructive impulses into opportunities for collaboration and growth. William is a renowned negotiator, anthropologist, and bestselling author whose insights and expertise have reshaped the way we approach conflict resolution. Among other top books he’s written, he is the co-author of  Getting to Yes, the world’s all-time bestselling book on negotiation with more than 15 million copies sold. William has served as a negotiator in many of the most challenging disputes of our time, having consulted for the White House, the State Department, and the Pentagon, as well as dozens of Fortune 500 companies. He is also the co-founder of Harvard’s distinguished Program on Negotiation, and has served as a negotiation adviser and mediator in conflicts ranging from Kentucky wildcat coal mine strikes to family feuds, from US partisan battles to wars in the Middle East, Colombia, Korea, and Ukraine.  His highly-anticipated new book, Possible: How We Survive (and Thrive) in an Age of Conflict, draws on decades of experience to shed light on some of the toughest conflicts of our time and how we can find a way forward. Today’s conversation takes us on a fascinating journey, from William’s first interest in negotiation and conflict resolution as a young child, to the central lessons he lays out in his books, to some of his most intense negotiating experiences with key figures, like Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. We learn about his Pathways to Possible method and how to transform seemingly impossible situations into creative and productive conversations before exploring the concept of self-mastery and engaging the third side in any conflict, and more. Join us as we explore William’s journey and his invaluable insights on navigating both personal and geopolitical conflicts with courage, self-mastery and compassion. Tune in to see conflict in a new light, tap into your innate potential, and approach animosity with curiosity. 276: Building Intergenerational Support To Move You Forward Fast
We are joined today by Hope Paterson, a global nomad, mother of two, education innovation specialist, and transformation coach. For two decades, Hope has been developing what she calls the Hope triangle: electrifying pathways for humans of all ages working at the intersection of education, innovation, and entrepreneurship. As a coach Hope is steadfast and supportive, walking alongside others as they move from old to new. She is also the founder of Hope Braintrust, a global think tank that hosts live events and collaborations. Her growing online network, the Hope Sparks Network, is a vibrant intergenerational community where people of all ages can connect to share their knowledge and experience. In today’s conversation with Hope, we learn how to embrace more bravery in our lives before delving into the concept of finding intergenerational allies. She shares how she first learned to flex her bravery muscles as a young girl, how her many years as an entrepreneur helped her build a network of brilliant individuals from across the world, and why she was determined to be the hopeful glue that brought them together. Hope also gives listeners her advice on how to put together and run an intergenerational advisory board, the type of individuals who are typically drawn to these communities, and why listening to your community members is essential. How can I be the bridge? How can I be the translator, the hopeful glue?’” — @Hopescott [0:18:29] “I always start my events out saying ‘This is a non-corporate loving space for you to explore what's possible.’” — @Hopescott [0:21:28] “Speak to kind, gentle people to begin with, because it might be a bit awkward and clunky. And then you can move out to the bold connections that might be harder to reach.” — @Hopescott [0:33:29] “By asking them, [and] by listening, I get to focus more on what they really want, and less on what I think they want.” — @Hopescott [0:36:14]   Watch our Finding Brave episodes on YouTube! 275: Race Rules: What Your Black Friend Won't Tell You
Fatimah Gilliam is an author, lawyer, sought-after speaker, consultant, and founder of The Azara Group, a consulting firm that provides diversity and inclusion, leadership development, negotiation, and strategy consulting services to Fortune 500 corporations, senior executives leading billion-dollar businesses, and industry thought leaders. Her groundbreaking book, Race Rules: What Your Black Friend Won't Tell You, is a practical manual of the unwritten rules that can help readers navigate today’s racially polarized world. In short, it’s a ‘how-to’ manual for white people to be less racially offensive; enabling them to develop stronger and more respectful cross-racial friendships and professional relationships with people of color. Today, Fatimah joins us as “white America’s Black friend” to tell us what others won’t say to our faces nor share about perspectives of color on white behaviors, choices, and interactions. She shares deep, transformative insights from her book, which seeks to open the door to perspectives of color so white people can learn, make better choices, take different actions, and evolve with a diversifying society in the 21st century. This conversation is an excellent source of well-informed and hard-hitting advice for those looking to move beyond performative allyship and live their non-racist values, rather than just talk about them. As we discuss, this is ideal for anyone who wants to bring the unconscious forward to consciousness, so they can take new actions every day that will directly and powerfully address and combat racism both in our own lives and behaviors, and in the world we live in. Tune in to learn more!   Key Highlights From This Episode: •   What inspired Fatimah to write this book and what her intentions are for it. [04:31] •   Ways that being a light-skinned Black woman has impacted her view of racism. [07:57] •   Defining racism and why Fatimah chooses to focus on impact rather than intent. [09:53] •   The ‘how-to’ guide she offers and how Race Rules differs from other books on racism. [13:37] •   How racism is distinct from prejudice with the key ingredient being power. [18:42] •   Fatimah's “Top 5” of 31 race rules and insight into her three-step Bedrock Race Rule. [20:15] •   Othering, marginalization, and how to ensure the language you use isn’t offensive and   harmful. [28:00] •   Rules for discussing race for white people who see themselves as anti-racist allies. [33:59] •   Understanding the relationship between defensiveness and exceptionalism. 274: How Playing Competitive Sports Supports Women's Leadership Success
It’s been proven that playing competitive sports continues to contribute significantly to the success and leadership growth that women experience in later life and in their careers. Joining me to share her first-hand insights and key observations from her own career and from recent important research on this topic, is Lara Abrash, Chair of Deloitte US, the largest professional services organization in the United States. To kick off the conversation, we dive into Deloitte’s pivotal study on the relationship between girls and women in competitive sports and leadership in the workplace later on in life. Lara shares her own experiences of playing softball, baseball, and tennis, revealing the essential skills she learned along the way. Next, we delve into the power of sports to foster skills development that women often don’t have the opportunity to develop elsewhere. We also discuss whether or not there is a place for emotional vulnerability in the workplace, and what changes when leaders are honest about their experiences. Join us today to hear all this and more!   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Introducing Lara Abrash, and her 30-year background leading up to her role as Chair of Deloitte US. 273: 6 Questions to Help You Create a Thrilling New Year

273: 6 Questions to Help You Create a Thrilling New Year
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! Note: This is a special airing of a “holiday favorite selection” and is a repeat of our Finding Brave holiday episode #208. “You just have to believe that there’s a higher version of you that you can tap into and that can access higher-level wisdom, insight, solutions, strategies, people, and connections. If you believe it, and if you believe it strongly, it’s amazing what happens in your life.” – Kathy Caprino  As we approach the end of another year, once again I’m happy to share this special “Holiday Selection,”  featuring some of the top Finding Brave episodes that have previously aired, to help you enter 2024 with even more bravery, inspiration, and motivation to pursue and achieve your most important and meaningful goals. Today, I’m excited to bring you an episode from late 2018, where I shared a helpful year-end strategy of reflection — the process of reflecting back on the past year in an in-depth, careful, and probing way, exploring all that you’ve learned and experienced, created, and also “failed” at. (Note: I don’t perceive “failure” the way many others do. I view it as a vital learning” opportunity — as an effective experience that, when viewed from a positive framework, helps us get much clearer on who we are, what we need to thrive, and what we  really want in our lives. This reflection process helps you connect in a powerful, deep way with your ultimate dreams and desires, and it highlights where you’ve been living “off course” – far away from what your most authentic self really wants. In this episode, I explore what I’ve found to be six essential reflection questions that are perfect for this time of year, to help us take stock, expand our gratitude and appreciation for all that we are today, and set the wheels in motion for shifting our approach to how we operate, communicate, and engage with others and with our core challenges and power gaps. This reflection process hatches important new revelations, and sets the stage for a brand new future. As always, be gentle and compassionate with yourself as you reflect, and remember that everything that’s happened can be used to bolster and uplift you, if you let it.  At the end of the show, I sing a little song to welcome in the New Year, from my heart to yours. I hope you enjoy it! I’d love to hear how your answering these six questions impacts you and what it reveals. And  I welcome your suggestions for any future topics or interviewees that you’re interested in hearing from. Please reach out to me by email, or on social media via LinkedIn, or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram and say hello and share your ideas! I wish you and your loved ones a very Happy New Year and I’m looking forward to connecting with you and serving up fresh, new episodes of Finding Brave in 2024 that will move you forward to create life and work as you dream it to be. If so, do they offer opportunities for powerful hands-on career growth and leadership training that addresses the real-world challenges that professional women face in the workplace and in their careers that are often different from what men typically face? I’m so thrilled that recently, a division of the United Nations has sponsored several memberships to The Most Powerful You course for their staff members and what a powerfully supportive move that is, to bring real-world effective career and leadership training to professionals in their work cultures, to help them thrive and succeed and the highest level possible in their work and projects. Coaching so many professionals and leaders as I do each year, I see that leadership and career growth training programs today are often NOT effective because they simply don’t go deep enough to address what really holds us back from thriving, believing in ourselves, recognizing our talents and abilities, communicating effectively, asking for what we need, saying “STOP!” to mistreatment, building a great support community, and making the true impact we long to. _______________   Need some great podcast production support? 271: How To Recognize and Release The Damaging Shame You Hold
Are your thoughts and actions regularly dictated by a harsh inner critic? Do you find yourself filled with feelings of unworthiness and that you are undeserving of love? If so, you may well be dealing with the symptoms of core shame. Our guest, David Jurasek, knows firsthand the devastating impact shame can have on your life and relationships, and he joins us today to shed light on this urgent topic. Drawing on his 25 years of experience as a mentor and therapist, David’s work is defined by his belief that your biggest source of sabotage is driven by core shame. He is the founder of Powerful and Loving, a community helping men and boys become powerful leaders who cultivate thriving relationships. Additionally, he is the author of My Heart Is A Muscle, a book that he wrote with the hopes of moving 500 men in the deepest way possible. In today’s conversation, we unpack the concept of core shame, where it tends to stem from, the devastating impact it can have on our lives, and how we can begin to release and heal from it. David opens up about the role that shame played in his life and explains why identifying its root cause is so important. We explore how our shame-based society prevents us from looking inward and the power of healthy relationships and community in helping us heal from shame. Our conversation also investigates the role of shame in our relationships and how we can break patterns of blame and criticism, before exploring how to go about dethroning your inner critic, followed by simple and effective techniques to help you process and let go of shame. Today’s episode is filled with profound insights and will give you a newfound understanding of the complexities of shame and its impact. We hope you’ll join us for a thought-provoking and empowering conversation on healing from shame and the power of love and community.   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Unpacking the concept of core shame, the impact of seeing yourself as unworthy or unlovable, and how this influences our lives and behavior. [21:23] • The symptoms of shame, why most people don’t realize they are carrying core shame, and why a shame-based society doesn’t want us to look internally. 267: Why Consent Is a Must for Connection and Respect in Life and Work

267: Why Consent Is a Must for Connection and Respect in Life and Work
Relationship expert, trainer, speaker, and author Dr. Eric FitzMedrud uses his wide-ranging expertise to teach men how to hone their consent skills for stronger relationships and hotter sex, and also has witnessed how consent enhances connection, reward, respect and fulfillment in work and organizational settings as well.  As a therapist committed to helping people live more meaningful, connected lives, Eric wrote the book The Better Man: A Guide to Consent, Stronger Relationships, and Hotter Sex to offer much-needed tools for instruction, healing, and growth. As you’ll discover in this episode, these tools can assist us in nearly all aspects of our lives. Today on Finding Brave, Eric paints a clearer picture of consent-driven leadership, highlights some of the systemic barriers that hinder the creation and growth of a consent culture at work, and delves into the emotional responses that often make the word “no” so difficult to hear and accept and what to do to shift that. We also touch on the important role of curiosity, open dialogue, vulnerability, and more. For a broader view of consent and how it can help you build deeper connections and mutual respect in life and work, be sure to tune in today!   Key Highlights From This Episode: •   How toxic masculinity negatively impacts men, not just women and others. [03:55] •   What consent is and why many of us lack the skills to communicate our needs. [08:10] •   The biggest problems that men have with consent in their intimate relationships. [14:29] •   Why receiving a “no” can be so difficult to deal with, the role of curiosity, and how to empower yourself using the things within your control. [17:00] •   The importance of (re)examining unconscious assumptions in relationship contracts. [24:11] •   How to ask better questions and encourage participation in consent conversations at home and at work. [30:40] •   A look at what consent-based leadership looks like and why open dialogue is crucial. [35:52] •   An invitation to add to and share your takeaways from this conversation with us! 266: The Sexy Lie: How Self-Objectification Damages Women's Lives

266: The Sexy Lie: How Self-Objectification Damages Women's Lives
As our reality becomes more entwined with social media, an ever-increasing number of girls and women are engaging in self-objectification. And while gaining money, resources and agency may seem empowering, there are hidden impacts to this behavior that can have far-reaching consequences for women, girls, and our society as a whole. Today’s guest, Dr. Caroline Heldman, describes this phenomenon as ‘the sexy lie’ and outlines it in her new book The Sexy Lie: The War on Women’s Bodies and How to Fight Back. Dr. Heldman has spent the bulk of her career engaging in issues around gender and social justice. She has published seven books on gender justice and politics and is a professor of Critical Theory & Social Justice at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Her work has been featured in numerous documentaries, including Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In. She is also the  Executive Director of The Representation Project, a political commentator for Spectrum and CNN, and co-founder of the New Orleans Women’s Shelter, the Lower Ninth Ward Living Museum, End Rape on Campus (EROC), Faculty Against Rape (FAR), and led the End Rape Statute of Limitations (ERSOL) that successfully abolished the time limit on prosecuting rape in California. In today’s conversation with Caroline, we tackle the difficult topic of how women are sexually objectified, the way it’s normalized within mainstream culture, and how this makes it virtually impossible for women to achieve full value in society. Caroline provides a comprehensive breakdown of ‘the sexy lie’ and how mistaking attention for power has led to the common misconception that self-objectification is empowering before unpacking the profoundly harmful effects of objectification on girls and women. Listeners will also hear her expert insights on the role of capitalism, profit margins, and the patriarchy in women’s sexual objectification and the structural changes it will take to alter these entrenched systems of power. Our conversation also explores the insidious impact of objectification culture in the workplace before hearing some much-needed advice on what women can do to fight back against internalizing the sexy lie and how to change society for the better. It’s no secret that our culture objectifies women, but by facing it head-on, naming it, and recognizing it for what it is, we can find new ways to ignite change and fight for better outcomes. Caroline is a deeply inspiring guest and I personally learned so much from this conversation.. Be sure to tune in to this today and share it with the men and women you know.   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Introducing Dr. Caroline Heldman, her definition of “the sexy lie” is, and the harmful effect this has on girls and women.  [01:52] • The overlap of power, influence and impact; why women tend to shun power; and how power is regularly defined in masculine terms. [09:57] • How society (de)values women; the gains and setbacks over the past few decades. [12:44] • The appeal of self-objectification and how we mistake attention for power. [15:14] • An overview of society’s deeply entrenched anti-fat bias, diet culture, and the harmful misconceptions we have when it comes to weight and size. [17:15] • How to understand power in the context of monetizing your image, reinforcing the male gaze, and the consequences for one’s self and broader society as a whole. [19:11] • Sexual objectification, how it dehumanizes people, and the many harms that this causes, especially for marginalized women. [24:17] • The serious impact of porn and social media on younger generations and their understanding of sex. 265: Reaching Top Success in Male-Dominated Fields While Staying True To Yourself, with Manuela Nicolosi

265: Reaching Top Success in Male-Dominated Fields While Staying True To Yourself, with Manuela Nicolosi
If there’s one person who is intimately familiar with what it means to be a woman making her way in a male-dominated field, it’s today’s guest, Manuela Nicolosi, an Italian international soccer referee, speaker, and entrepreneur. Manuela is an undeniable trailblazer and has a series of barrier-breaking accomplishments to her name. Not only is she the first woman to referee a Men’s European Final (the Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea in 2019), but she is also the first Italian woman to referee the final of the Women’s World Cup. In today’s conversation with Manuela, we talk about her journey as a soccer referee, her love of the game, and the challenges she’s faced while navigating a field dominated by men. We learn about the strict rules that governed Italian soccer when she was growing up, how this prevented women from becoming referees, and the change in regulation that took place when she was only 15, opening up new opportunities for women. Not only did this allow her to pursue her huge dream of making a name for herself in soccer, but it paved the way for her to inspire other young women to do the same through her work as a public speaker. Tuning in you’ll learn about many of the skills you need to master as a top-level referee, such as being able to make quick decisions under pressure and remaining calm and balanced when players and fans are (sometimes aggressively and angrilly) challenging your decisions. We then go on to examine how these skills can translate to other leadership positions and why learning to accept your mistakes and take them in stride is such a game-changer. Today’s episode is deeply inspiring and a powerful reminder of what it means to follow your dreams, no matter the odds, so be sure to tune in!   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Learing about our inspiring guest today: Manuela Nicolosi. [00:21] • Her strong relationship with her father, their shared love of soccer, why he objected to her playing professionally, and how he came to support her dream of refereeing at a high level.  [03:13] • Italy’s outdated rule that only men could be referees, and the Federation’s decision to open up opportunities to women. [05:41] • The tragic loss of her father when she was 16 years old and her desire to make her father proud through her work. [09:53] • Manuela’s experience of being the only woman in a male-dominated field, the challenges she has had to overcome, and how her dedication helped her persevere. [13:56] • What Manuela has learned about how to remain focused when she makes a mistake and what this can teach us about leadership. [19:24] • The resistance and active opposition you face from players and why it’s important to remain calm and firm in your decisions. [23:27] • The intense selection process to referee for the World Cup, what it was like for Manuela to referee the Finals, and the tremendous pressure she faced as a woman. [29:12] • The crowd’s beautiful reaction to seeing the first ever group of women refereeing a World Cup final. [36:05] • Find out about Manuela’s children’s book and what she has learned from her work as a speaker. This topic is something I feel compelled to talk about given my particular lens as a former corporate VP, then a marriage and family therapist (focused on systems and communication), a researcher, and in coaching and training thousands of executives and professionals across 6 continents these past 16 years. I know too – from working with teams and leaders at organizations both large and small, including startups that are experiencing exponential growth – that many managers and even seasoned leaders fear they simply don’t know enough to do their jobs well, Many suffer from imposter syndrome. In short, confidence is a problem that impedes thousands of people’s success and fulfillment in life and work. Tune into today’s show as I explore the 5 ways that your lack of confidence is hurting you, and what you can do specifically to overcome this challenge and build your confidence and self-trust now so that it doesn’t impact your success and professional fulfillment in the future. 262: Employees Need Empathy From Leaders and Half Aren't Getting It with Raj Sharma
A great leader is able to resiliently and bravely handle core challenges and address key obstacles, all while building a work culture of belonging, safety and trust. And having leaders who demonstrate true empathy has become far more important to employees in today’s post-covid world. To explore what empathy in the workplace is today and how leaders must demonstrate it more fully and authentically, is our inspiring guest Raj Sharma from Ernst & Young.  Raj is the Vice Chair at Ernst & Young (EY) Consulting. His 25 years of experience in commercial and financial services has helped him become a global business executive and transformative technology leader, building businesses and executing strategic growth initiatives worldwide. He now leads over 25,000 consultants across the Americas service line. In our conversation, we explore the importance of empathy in leadership by examining EY’s recent study on empathy in business. We learn about the most compelling results from the study and what motivated EY to do this research in the first place, how their findings can help other leaders, and what our guest thinks about empathy overall.  Discussing the research findings that over 50% of employees don’t see real empathy at work, Raj explains how empathy can lead to innovation and accountability and how you can improve actionable empathy in your own workplace. We discuss his 5 steps for becoming a great leader and what Raj finds most challenging about managing such a large workforce. Finally, we explore the idea that leaders aren’t just “born” – there is a great deal of work, commitment and self-mastery required in becoming a highly effective leader and manager. To learn more about empathy and its critical role in sustaining a successful organization, don’t miss today’s show.    Key Highlights From This Episode: • A note of thanks to our loyal listeners for 500 000 downloads and our top 1.5% ranking! 260: Are You an Anxious Achiever? Turn Your Fears into Your Superpower with Morra Aarons-Mele
Anxiety in the workplace is far more common than many of us are willing to admit. And by refusing to normalize it we are making it even more difficult for people to navigate mental health issues and thrive at work. Our guest today, Morra Aarons-Mele, is no stranger to anxiety in the workplace and is the author of The Anxious Achiever: Turn Your Biggest Fears into Your Leadership Superpower. Morra has done powerful work in raising awareness for mental health in the workplace and has a long list of achievements to her name. In addition to being a best-selling author, global speaker, and consultant, she is also an entrepreneur and communications executive. She is the founder of Women Online, an award-winning social impact agency and she created its database of female influencers, The Mission List, both of which were sold in 2021. Morra is also the host of the award-winning podcast, The Anxious Achiever, where she helps listeners rethink the relationship between their mental health and leadership. In today’s conversation with Morra, we discuss what inspired her to pursue her work as an advocate for workplace mental health and why anxiety in the workplace needs to be normalized and understood differently from the way it is today. She shares the details of her own complex mental health journey and unpacks how our biased systems aren’t actually designed to serve large groups of the population — like minority groups, women, and neurodivergent individuals — and what steps you can take to make work work for you (and how to identify what you need to help you get there). We also explore why self-awareness is essential to good leadership, what it means to make anxiety your ally, and how to assess when anxiety is a response that will be productive or counter-productive for you. To learn more about anxiety at work and how to shift your relationship with your mental health, be sure to tune in to this thought-provoking conversation with Morra Aarons-Mele!   Key Highlights From This Episode:  • Introducing today’s guest, Morra Aarons-Mele, her complex mental health journey, and why she was compelled to write on the topic of being an anxious achiever. They're racist, they're patriarchal, they're biased. And why do a lot of women feel anxious? Why do a lot of people of color feel anxious? Because they are in places that aren't welcoming.” — @morraam [0:13:27] “We don't make systems for the neurodivergent brain.” — @morraam [0:15:49] “People like me, we need independence. 259: Overcome Perfectionism and Self-doubt by Embracing Your Flawesome Self
Today’s guest has a fascinating and important perspective on what it is to live authentically, or as she describes it, “flawesomely”. Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani is the co-founder of Mindvalley, one of the world’s most powerful life transformation platform with a following of 20 million and still growing. She is an entrepreneur, writer, international speaker, artist, philanthropist, and host of the podcast, Flawesome with Kristina. With 20 years of experience in the personal growth industry, her content has touched the lives of tens of thousands of students. Today she joins Finding Brave to discuss her book Becoming Flawesome: The Key to Living An Imperfectly Authentic Life. Kristina explains what it means to live “as ourselves without ourselves” and opens up about the revelation she had when she realized that she was missing herself. We discuss our views on perfectionism, why you can’t recover from being yourself, and the distinction between unlearning certain behaviors versus what’s part of your personality. We also explore the concept of emotional analgesia and the relationship between this and gender roles.
