Buffering: A Rewatch Adventure is a sci-fi rewatch podcast. It is for both beginners and fans. The hosts are musician Jenny Owen Youngs and LGBTQIA+ activist Kristin Russo. The podcast started in 2016 with a rewatching of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Jenny is a self-professed sci-fi and fantasy nerd who owns the complete box sets of Buffy and Angel on DVD. Kristin was new to Buffy but admitted to owning a custom set of vampire fangs when she was growing up.
Together, Kristin and Jenny watch each episode, discussing the action from Sunnydale High. Joining them are friends from the world of entertainment. Armin Shimerman (Principal Snyder) and Sarah Michelle Gellar's stunt double join. Writer Helen Zaltzman shares her expert thoughts on the language used in the show. Their producer, LaToya Ferguson, discusses the presentation of race in the series. LaToya also hosts the Angel on Top podcast about Angel with cohost Morgan Lutich.
Interspersed throughout the podcast are "Mailbag" episodes. In these, they share thoughts and stories from listeners. Jenny also writes unique recap songs or "jingles" for every episode. Whether listeners are Willow fans or don't even know who Willow is, it's a great way to enjoy the show.
The podcast follows Buffy with the "Doomcoming" season about the series Yellow Jackets. Up next is The X-Files, which Jenny loved growing up. Kristin has only seen the first episode. In the trailer, Jenny describes the two main characters. They are Dana Scully, who loves shoulder pads, and Fox Mulder, who's searching for extraterrestrials.
With each series, there are guest interviews and listener interaction throughout the podcast. In one, listener Sophie Day emailed the hosts about the character of Luther Lee Boggs. Sophie helps to represent inmates on death row who are on their last appeals. She shares real-life stories and discusses the portrayal of death row prisoners on TV and in film.
The Buffering: A Rewatch Adventure podcast is an entertaining guide to popular sci-fi shows. The hosts have fun watching and rewatching their favorite episodes. Plus, there are lots of bonus episodes for true sci-fi fans.
