Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance Podcast Episode 31 - Is Zero Pain Possible To Achieve In Pet Osteoarthritis with Dr Matt Gurney
This podcast is truly a must-listen episode!   Dr Russell Chandler has a conversation with one of the greats in Pain Management, and one-half of the Zero Pain Philosophy team, Dr Matt Gurney.    Matt discusses why he and Dr Carl Bradbrook conceived of the idea for Zero Pain Philosophy.  We delve into the reasons why they believed that there was a need for such an educational platform.    Matt goes into detail on the differences between acute and chronic pain.  He explains the dysregulated pain physiology in maladaptive pain, and at which levels of the pain pathway pharmaceutical against can act.    Using the ‘ladder’ concept Dr Gurney suggests a process whereby the correct drug may be chosen at the correct time.    Recent controversies concerning anti-NFG-monoclonal antibodies and NSAIDs are covered.  Matt also has something to say about gabapentinoids.    Finally, some take homes that can be applied immediately are offered.    If you are a veterinary professional and you are interested in the Zero Pain Philosophy, go to the website https://www.zeropainphilosophy.com/vet-professionals   This podcast was sponsored by the Nupsala MSK Clinic www.nupsala-msk.co.uk a state-of-the-art veterinary referral centre in Leicestershire.    Reference: Osteoarthritis in over 16s: diagnosis and management NICE guideline [NG226]Published: 19 October 2022 https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng226   Please subscribe to this podcast, leave a comment, and share the podcast link with friends and colleagues.    JOIN VETERINARY OSTEOARTHRITIS ALLIANCE TODAY www.vet-oa.com #veterinary #veterinarian #vetnurse #vetphysio #osteoarthritis #painmanagement #zeropainphilosophy #analgesia #animalwelfare #proudlylinnaeus #produdlymars #nupsala #veterinaryosteoarthritisalliance

Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance Podcast Episode 29 - A Global Perspective On Canine Osteoarthritis with Dr Hannah Capon
VOA Podcast Episode 29 Dr Hannah Capon speaks to Dr Russell Chandler on: A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON CANINE OSTEOARTHRITIS Recorded on 22nd February 2024 Thank you for supporting the Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance by listening to this podcast.  In a genuinely international episode recorded on three continents (Europe, Africa, and Asia), thanks to the miracle of Microsoft Teams® we took a global view of canine osteoarthritis.  In the canine osteoarthritis sphere, there must be very few people who are not familiar with the trailblazing work of Dr Hannah Capon, UK veterinary surgeon.  Hannah created the organisation that is CANINE ARTHRITIS MANAGEMENT (CAM).  Through CAM Hannah has been able to put canine OA firmly and permanently high up on the agenda as an issue of crucial importance for animal welfare.  We talked about how canine OA is an issue of global importance, and how different attitudes toward animal suffering including this disease seem to exist in different areas of the world.   Hannah stressed the need for vets and allied professionals to be sensitive to cultural differences  when communicating with the animal caregivers.  Extreme canine phenotypes are a hot topic at the moment.  We spoke about how different approaches may prevent us as a profession from alienating owners of such breeds, using Russell’s rescue pug as an example.   Hannah has also announced the inaugural CAM Chronic Pain Symposium.  This online event, on 6th and 7th April 2024, boasts over forty internationally renowned speakers and is FREE to attend live, thanks to E.LearningVet and Elanco.  VIP tickets are also available to purchase at very reasonable cost.  Wherever we are in the world; we as veterinary professionals can make a difference to animals’ lives by better management of canine OA.  Remember the in-person event on 22nd and 23rd May 2024 which is VOACON. This two-day conference in Leicester, UK, returns for a second year and promises to be event better (a tough ask) than the first one.  Tickets are selling fast so don’t delay in grabbing yours.  The VOA Podcast gives thanks to: Dr Hannah Capon, podcast guest (in Morocco) Dr Russell Chandler, podcast host (in Singapore) Ben Wright, podcast producer (in the UK) This podcast is kindly sponsored by Nupsala MSK Clinic https://nupsala-msk.co.uk/ For more information on VOA, to join the Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance, and sign up for VOACON visit our website – https://vet-oa.com/ For more information on CAM, and their website – https://caninearthritis.co.uk/ to sign up for the CAM Symposium on Chronic Pain visit elearningvet https://membership.elearning.vet/chronic-pain-symposium-2024 Please comment, like, share, follow, and recommend this episode of the VOA Podcast.Wherever you are in the world, please get in contact with the Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance and tell us what you would like to see featured on this podcast by emailing info@vet-oa.com The Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance Podcast is available worldwide and has been downloaded in forty countries so far. Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance Podcast Episode 25b: 245 Real-life examples of stem cell therapy applied in refractory veterinary musculoskeletal cases
Jun 23 2023
Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance Podcast Episode 25b: 245 Real-life examples of stem cell therapy applied in refractory veterinary musculoskeletal cases
These two episodes are really Podcasts not to miss.   In this second episode, Russell Chandler of VOA continues his conversation with two of the great innovators of canine regenerative medicine in the UK.    Dr Andy Armitage needs little introduction.  Andy established the UK’s first private veterinary practice devoted, solely, to small animal regenerative medicine, the Greenside Veterinary Practice in Scotland.  He has collaborated, for many years, with Dr Jo Miller of Cell Therapy Sciences, Coventry.  Jo along with her business partner, Dr Christine Standen founded the laboratory to manufacture stem cells for use by vets in clinical practice. Together they have to date provided more than 11,000 stem cell doses for mor than 3,000 patients.         Podcast recorded 21st April 2023   Guests: DR ANDY ARMITAGE and DR JO MILLER   Host: RUSSELL CHANDLER   Producer: KIZZY BASS   Episode 25b content: This episode complements the previous release: VOA Podcast 25a.  Exciting therapies like stem cells have attracted plenty of hype.  Have you ever wondered how many cases have been reported supporting this kind of treatment?  Until now most series have been on the low side in numbers of cases treated.  That all changed when Andy Armitage’s paper was published in which a staggering 245 cases were described.  As if that is not enough, all of these cases had previously been unresponsive to ‘conventional’ multimodal medical, or surgical management.      Andy answers questions on his case series and Jo Miller supports this by continuing to give her input from a scientist’s view point.    All in all this is another great episode. The information is presented in an accessible way and should be of interest to all of us involved in the veterinary osteoarthritis space.     Reference:   Armitage, A. J., Miller, J. M., Sparks, T. He spent six and a half years being in command of the Veterinary Training Squadron at the Defence Animal Training Regiment in Melton Mowbray, caring for the Regiment’s dogs and horses, and being a referral centre for all of Defence’s working dogs across the UK and deployed on overseas operations. This has included breeds such as Labradors, Spaniels, and German Shepherds, plus a few more unusual breeds like the Irish Wolfhounds and even a German Jagdterrier! Some of his most enjoyable times in the Army have been caring for the ‘old and bold’ dogs as they prepare to leave service and become family pets. He was involved in lameness assessments, radiographic surveys looking for signs of arthritis, treatment, and exercise plans, and managing work and training are all parts of a holistic plan tailor-made for each dog. He has a passion for improving quality of life in dogs and am very excited to be able to partake in Nupsala Musculoskeletal Clinic’s goal to help improve the treatment and management of chronic pain. Drew describes his fascinating professional background as a military veterinary surgeon.  He talks about how this got him interested in small animal OA. Interesting similarities and differences between military working dogs and pet dogs are described.   Drew walks us though the need for the development of a specialised clinic devoted to clinic. We get a flavour of how they assess and manage their cases.  Intra-articular therapies are discussed and the obstacles to their widespread adoption are outlined.  The differences between how likely equine vets and small animal vets are to reach for orthobiologics make for interesting listening.      Drew also comments on the effects of adiposity on OA in pets. All-in-all it was great to have Drew on the show to hear his unique perspectives on veterinary OA management.    We hope that you find this podcast useful.  Acknowledgements VOA is grateful to Nupsala MSK Clinic for their generous sponsorship and for making the VOA Podcast freely available worldwide.  Thanks to everyone at VOA who made this podcast possible, especially our producer, Kizzy Bass.  More information on Drew Nupsala MSK clinic https://nupsala-msk.co.uk/ Finally We are all time-poor.  The VOA Podcast is a fantastic way to keep up your CPD, especially when you are on the move, such as during your commute or daily exercise.  Please help us to bring you more exciting and informative episodes on the VOA Podcast by following, commenting, and sharing the link to your favourite social media platforms. You can join our steadily growing multidisciplinary alliance at our website: www.vet-oa.com Podcasts recorded 17th February 2023
