The What Podcast

Consequence Podcast Network

The What Podcast is a weekly show by two veterans of the entertainment media universe with a passion for live music and music festivals. They came together over a love of Bonnaroo and found out pretty quickly that they are not alone. In fact, since launching in 2018, they found kindred spirits all over the world who also love the vibe found only at music festivals. Each week they share their own stories and opinions, but they also dig deeper and talk to the musicians and industry insiders who make the magic happen. The What Podcast is part of the Consequence Podcast Network.

Diving into EDM on the Bonnaroo 2024 Lineup Part 2
Just a few weeks ago, The What Podcast crew started to take a look electronic dance music's relationship with Bonnaroo. This week, that journey continues, as Barry, Bryan, and Lord Taco chat with a panel of fans who seek to help guide them through the uncharted EDM waters (What is 'Electro-Soul'?).Now familiar with the genre's history in regards to Bonnaroo, as well as having examined the evolution of The Other stage and Where in the Woods, the gang now turns to a carefully selected group of experts: Tyrone Basket of The Daily Frequency, Kyle Gonzalez, Christian Pina, and Matthew Murphy. The guests answer Barry and Bryan's questions, helping them awaken the rave-kids that perhaps have been within them all along.Building on what we learned from Daniel a few weeks ago and his Spotify EDM playlists (bonnaroo bpm, where in the woods swirl, where in the woods bass, and philos records takeover), the panel helps us break down the artists on the lineup and give us an idea of what to expect (Beware of SVDDEN DEATH!).Stay tuned to The What Podcast to hear when we announce the winner of our ticket giveaway contest, too!Listen to the full chat, or watch this episode via YouTube and then do us a solid by liking, reviewing, and subscribing to The What Podcast wherever you listen. Why Moon River Festival Is Skipping 2024
Jan 31 2024
Why Moon River Festival Is Skipping 2024
After five years in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the Moon River Festival is hitting the pause button for 2024. Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly joins hosts Barry, Lord Taco, and Bryan Stone on The What Podcast to discuss possible reasons why. Listen here, or wherever you get your podcasts.Despite three sell-out years in Chattanooga, Moon River won’t be returning for what Mayor Kelly admits are complicated reasons. He points to the general impact of inflation, as well as the economics of a festival in 2024.But while he hopes Moon River will return at some point in the future, he’s not waiting around for the stars to align. “I can tell you behind the scenes, we’re talking to some folks about trying to stand up something local,” Mayor Kelly says, noting the event would focus on “local and smaller artists.” “Because the consolidation of the festival business isn’t helpful to any of this either, because there aren’t enough entrants and competitors.”Listen to the full chat or watch it via YouTube. Danny Clinch on Photographing Bruce Springsteen and Getting Radiohead to Play Bonnaroo
Danny Clinch’s photographs have appeared in hundreds of magazines and countless album covers over the years. He’s made a career documenting some of the best moments in rock, folk, hip-hop, and beyond. So of course, he’s crossed over with Bonnaroo on more than a few occasions. On this episode of The What Podcast, Clinch joins Barry and Lord Taco to chat about some of his best known work, including the iconic photos of Bruce Springsteen in the snow from his Letter to You album. He also tells his stories of shooting Taylor Swift for Time and how he’s directly influenced Bonnaroo history.“I had a hand in telling Radiohead how cool Bonnaroo was, and that it was the closest thing to a European that they would see,” he recalls. “They were not so sure about doing it, and when they ended up doing it, they absolutely loved it.”Regarding Springsteen’s own appearance on The Farm, Clinch noted: “I also had a lot to do with Springsteen sitting in with Phish that year. Bruce had come and done the festival and he stayed an extra day. He was watching Citizen Cope from the side-stage with one of his sons, and I wandered over to Bruce and I said, ‘Have you seen Phish before?’ He said, ‘No!’ I said, ‘Well they’re tonight; those boys can play anything…’ An hour later I ran into their tour manager and he said, ‘Hey Bruce just hit us up! I think he’s gonna come and sit in, come over and photograph while they’re rehearsing!'”Listen to The What Podcast chat with Danny Clinch here or watch it via YouTube. Noah Kahan on Being Honest About Mental Health: High Five Clip
Since singer-songwriter Noah Kahan last joined The What Podcast, he’s been all over the place. From being selected as a Shaky Knees headliner to guesting on SNL, it’s been nothing but onwards and upwards for the artist. On this High Five Clip, Kahan talks with Brad, Barry, and Lord Taco ahead of his appearance at Bonnaroo 2023.Kahan talks about how important it is to be honest about mental health, as well as how much it means to him that his songs might be able to help someone in need. In particular, he goes into the difficulties of actually opening up.“It’s like a bunch of people telling you that at the bottom of a pit of fire, there’s a big cushion,” he says. “You have to trust yourself to jump into it, but all you know is the fire, and all you can see is the fire, and all these people are like, ‘I promise you that there’s a big pillow at the bottom.’ It takes a long time for people to make that fall, it takes an incredible amount of trust to tell someone how you’re feeling.”Listen to The What Podcast chat with Noah Kahan here or watch it via YouTube. Mastodon’s Brann Dailor Recalls Being on Game of Thrones: High Five Clip
It’s no secret that the music business is a wild industry, but every now and then it comes with its perks. On this High Five Clip from The What Podcast, Brann Dailor of Mastodon tells the story of how the band managed to appear as extras on HBO’s legendary drama Game of Thrones.Making a pair of cameos in two different seasons, Dailor explains how the opportunity arose, the band’s reaction, and what it was like portraying a wilding. “I looked over and I saw Bill [Kelliher], my guitar player, was asleep in the mud,” Dailor recalled. “And we were about to have our cue that we were supposed to get up, and I think that he woke up at the last second. Otherwise, he was about to be that guy amongst hundreds of extras that were laying in the mud.”Listen to The What Podcast chatting with Brann Dailor here or watch it via YouTube.
