Emotion Focused Family Therapy For Eating Disorder Recovery with Bryn Miler
Welcome back to the HealED Podcast! I'm your host, Marie-Pier. Today we are talking about the role of family in eating disorder care.   Joining me in this conversation is Bryn Miller, a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado, a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Supervisor and a Certified Advanced Therapist in Emotion-Focused Family Therapy.       In this episode, Bryn shares the story behind their framework, known as the response roadmap, and how it integrates elements of EFFT and her experience working with parents and caregivers. She delve into the first step of the framework, which involves recognizing and paying attention to our emotions. Bryn emphasizes the importance of prioritizing self-care for parents and caregivers in overcoming barriers when treating eating disorders. Bryn acknowledges the complexity of eating disorders and the multiple factors that contribute to them. She highlights the importance of empowering parents to find the approach that feels right for them, while respecting the individual's control over their treatment and involvement of others. Even if the individual doesn't want their family involved, working with parents or caregivers can still provide support and understanding.   Encouraging reflection and repetition, Bryn shares intervention techniques to support families, such as therapeutic apology and EFFT interventions. She emphasizes the need for repair and reconnection if the lack of family involvement changes. Bryn stresses the importance of honouring both the person with the eating disorder and the parent or caregiver's experiences, finding a way for them to reconnect if possible and helpful.   In our conversation with Bryn, we also explore the importance of self-care and refueling for parents and caregivers. Bryn shares how parenting, dealing with eating disorder treatment, and recovery can be incredibly challenging to balance. She addresses common triggers and factors that contribute to burnout, emphasizing the need to recalibrate our sense of success and failure to avoid feeling ineffective.   Thank you to Bryn for joining us and sharing their valuable insights. Check out Bryn's website here: Website: brynmillercoaching.com     We would also love to hear your thoughts and feedback. From ”Special Diets” to Anti-Diet: Navigating Health Outside of Diet Culture with Jasna Robinson-Wright
Welcome to The HealED Podcast! I'm your host, Marie-Pier, and today we have an incredible guest joining us, Jasna Robinson-Wright, an amazing registered dietitian at The Balanced Practice. In this episode, we're diving deep into the intersections between health conditions, eating disorders, and navigating dietary restrictions without triggering disordered eating. Jasna and I discuss the dangers of jumping straight into the most restrictive route when addressing health issues. We challenge the common belief that cutting out dairy and gluten is necessary for various health conditions.  We also explore the confusion and misinformation surrounding food and nutrition advice in the information age. With everyone feeling like experts on nutrition and readily giving advice without solid evidence, it's important to discern what's valid and what's not. Moreover, we delve into the pervasive influence of diet culture, wellness culture, and weight bias in society. Popular diets often receive media attention and hype, despite lacking proven effects. Believing that certain foods are "bad" can lead to guilt, shame, and potentially worsening health conditions or disordered eating. So, grab your favourite beverage, sit back, and get ready for an insightful and transformative discussion on healing, health, and intuitive eating. Let's dive right in!   Want to join Jasna's Workshop on the intersection of Diabetes and Eating Disorders? Check it out here. This workshop aims to provide guidance for individuals living with health conditions, such as diabetes, on navigating dietary restrictions without triggering an eating disorder.   Want to work with Jasna?
