Our Editor's Take

Dungeons and Daddies is a D&D real-play podcast. For those not familiar with Dungeons & Dragons, this series is like a spontaneous adventure. And on this program, the players role-play as "dad" characters. Dungeon Master Anthony Burch dictates the story and characters' actions. They are also led, of course, by the roll of the dice.

The game that the hosts play in the podcast follows four dads traveling to The Forgotten Realms. There they set out on a quest to find their lost sons. That is the premise for Season 1, and the story evolves into later seasons. The Dungeons and Daddies players take their characters on a mission that intrigues listeners. Like a good book or film, their story has many storylines and plot developments. It's told by an impressive group of improvisers. They all play Dungeons and Dragons in an inventive way. The "dad" characters include the "sports dad," Darryl Wilson, and the "hippy dad," Henry Oak. Joining them is "the awkward stepfather" Ron Stampler. The fourth is "rock and roll dad" Glenn Close (no connection to the actor, though).

The creators describe it as a "rowdy, horny, violent podcast for grownups." This is a fun, imaginative, and wild version of a D&D podcast. The players get involved in surprising escapades as they decide which paths to take. Their "mythical reality" becomes real through vivid imagery and descriptive dialogue. It's a hilarious unfolding of this imaginative crusade in Dungeons and Daddies. These players show listeners how original and boisterous a role-playing game can be.

These game-play episodes are about one hour and 30 minutes in duration. Listeners can get stuck into the mission like an exciting audiobook. All episodes of Dungeons and Daddies are available now.
