Sick and Seeking

Leslie Field

Sick and Seeking is hosted by Leslie Field who, after a diagnosis in her late teens of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), has been on a 22-year journey of healing and self-discovery. In this podcast, Leslie invites you to join her for intimate, honest and heartfelt conversations with others who are also on their own healing journeys as they live with and manage the long-term effects of “dis-ease” in the body. Listen to the stories of courageous people who, in the face of an uncertain medical future, are on a quest to go deeper into their bodies, beyond symptom and diagnosis—or in some cases no diagnosis—to reach a place of intuitive knowing, healing and transformation. This podcast is, above all, an exploration in healing and examines a variety of modalities and knowledge from conventional medicine to holistic and complementary therapies that bring a spiritual, psychological and mystical perspective to bodily healing in our modern culture.

CLICK HERE TO CONNECT! I'D LOVE TO KNOW -- What keeps you listening? Ideas for future episodes? Something that landed on your heart or mind you needed to hear? Looking forward to connecting with you! --Leslie ❣️ My name is Leslie Field, and I’m a Somatic Practitioner of Embodied Movement and I help people reconnect to their innate body wisdom through therapeutic movement practices.❣️ I am also the creator and host of the Sick and Seeking Podcast - Hi! I created a gentle body meditation and guided somatic movement practice to give you better insight into the work I do outside of podcasting. Why do I feel the desire to be a Somatic Practitioner? Well...We live in a culture that is depressed, anxious, and unwell. Most people are living from the neck upwards and are cutoff from their body sensation and emotional experience. There's a destructive shoving down of feelings leading to illness and a loss of knowing who we are and what we want. So how do we come back to ourselves and find wholeness? Somatic Embodied Movement. Embodied movement is about coming back to the body and becoming alive to the signals, messages and sensations as a compassionate and curious witness. This type of movement practice helps us map our sense of self both internally and externally. Feeling ourself grows our sense of self. Being open to the full array of sensory and emotional perception -- from awe, wonder, and pleasure, to pain, sadness and grief -- allows us to savor the full human experience in body, mind, and spirit.  So that we can come back to feeling our strength, aliveness, vitality and ultimately: wholeness.  I offer small, intimate classes in Pasadena, CA as well as work one-on-one on zoom. If you are curious and want to know more, let's chat! Email: Leslie@LeslieAField.com "I felt balanced and a zen-like calm after class.""Leslie has a gift for creating a safe, comfortable environment in to help heal the  nervous system through movement. I noticed an immediate difference in my general well-being and even my digestion following her class.""I was able to ground myself and attune to my body's needs, accessing emotions that can be difficult to open up to."🌟 Connect with Leslie and Sick and Seeking Community: 🌟Website | YouTube | Facebook | InstagramJoin an Embodied Movement Class or Wild Women's Circle!🔥 CLICK HERE for details 🔥 In-Person: Tuesday, 8:30am PT in South Pasadena, CA Wednesdays, 6:00pm PT in San Marino, CA Virtual/ ZOOM Thursdays, : 12-1pm PT on Zoom 🌟 FREE support group: Chronic Conditions - Coffee & Connection🌟--> For people who are managing a long term health issue-->We meet on ZOOM once a month at 12pm PTLike The Show? CLICK HERE TO CONNECT! I'D LOVE TO KNOW -- What keeps you listening? Ideas for future episodes? Something that landed on your heart or mind you needed to hear? Looking forward to connecting with you! --Leslie Well, here we are! The final episode of Sick and Seeking Season 2!After you listen to this episode, I invite you to go BACK and listen to any episodes from season 1 or 2 that you may have missed. They are still wonderful episodes, even if they are from a year or two ago. AND, I’m going to ask a favor - can you rate and review the Sick and Seeking Podcast whenever you listen to your podcasts? It helps the podcast to be more easily discovered by people who it may support and serve on their healing journey. We’re doing something a bit different this week. If you’ve listened to this podcast, you know that I share about myself here and there, but I’ve never done an entire episode all about me. Well. Today is the day! Before we hop into the episode, context is important: I recorded this over a year ago, not really knowing where this content would land. And it feels a bit rambly in the end so forgive me there. And let me tell you there is a part of me that wanted the episode about me to be this to be super clean and well thought out story etc. but you know what? I don’t have time for that, and as an entrepreneur I’ve learned that ‘good enough’ has to be good enough sometimes.I will give you an in the moment health update as things have changed since this was recorded: I still have chronic kidney disease. I’m not in dialysis nor have I had a transplant, however, my kidney function numbers do look to be in decline. As you will hear, my function was steady for over a decade, but it appears this is not the case any longer. This has been causing a lot of fear and uncertainty in our house as we navigate this change and do our best to know what the next step forward.I’m physically feeling pretty darn good right now in body, mind and soul and I’m grateful for the days I feel good on all of these levels. The mental toll of thinking through what may lay ahead for my body and my family is difficult, but this is my life. There will be good days and bad days. I’m fortifying myself with more knowledge, a loving and supportive group of friends 🌟 Connect with Leslie and Sick and Seeking Community: 🌟Website | YouTube | Facebook | InstagramJoin an Embodied Movement Class or Wild Women's Circle!🔥 CLICK HERE for details 🔥 In-Person: Tuesday, 8:30am PT in South Pasadena, CA Wednesdays, 6:00pm PT in San Marino, CA Virtual/ ZOOM Thursdays, : 12-1pm PT on Zoom 🌟 FREE support group: Chronic Conditions - Coffee & Connection🌟--> For people who are managing a long term health issue-->We meet on ZOOM once a month at 12pm PTLike The Show? And what I really needed was to process that emotional trauma and know that that was the underlying cause of my symptoms so I could address it at the root.” - Rebecca Tolin Highlights:Rebecca’s traumatic experience while working abroad as a journalist, and her 13 year attempt to cure her Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and other health conditions through allopathic medicineDr. John Sarno, mind body healing, and somatics led to Rebecca’s eventual remission of her symptoms and health conditions The importance of self-compassion and unconditional love of self when managing a health conditionHow Mind-Body Coaching helps people find safety in their mind and bodyLearning to be with sensations in the body through mindful awareness and somatic tracking Paying attention to our belief systems & finding compassionate truth in our experience of illness and healthOften people hold something inside of themselves that wants to be honored or heard, and without its recognition it can manifest in a physical wayLearning to tune in and honor the deeper wisdom in the body, mind, heart, and soulThe concept of outcome independence and participating in practices with curiosity instead of revving the nervous system for a specific outcome “...These sensations in my body that I had called labels and names and diagnosis were looking for my attention, and when I gave them loving, even neutral attention, the underlying emotion could surface and almost always there was some sense of relief after that...I could feel it was medicine to me.”Connect with Rebecca:Website | Facebook | 🌟 Connect with Leslie and Sick and Seeking Community: 🌟Website | YouTube | Facebook | InstagramJoin an Embodied Movement Class or Wild Women's Circle!🔥 CLICK HERE for details 🔥 In-Person: Tuesday, 8:30am PT in South Pasadena, CA Wednesdays, 6:00pm PT in San Marino, CA Virtual/ ZOOM Thursdays, : 12-1pm PT on Zoom 🌟 FREE support group: Chronic Conditions - Coffee & Connection🌟--> For people who are managing a long term health issue-->We meet on ZOOM once a month at 12pm PTLike The Show? The symptoms are the clues. They're the map. They're giving us all the information that we need to know. We just have to learn how to tune in.” - Gina Calderone “So as a physical therapist, it helps to have certain kinds of modalities like that with craniosacral work, pranic healing, such as I mentioned, and being able to move the energy that way.  But the work that I learned in medical intuition and sacred contracts, and energy medicine is helping people understand why they're at where they're at and how they can make those shifts to feel free, improve their bodies, improve their lives.” 🌟 Connect with Leslie and Sick and Seeking Community: 🌟Website | YouTube | Facebook | InstagramJoin an Embodied Movement Class or Wild Women's Circle!🔥 CLICK HERE for details 🔥 In-Person: Tuesday, 8:30am PT in South Pasadena, CA Wednesdays, 6:00pm PT in San Marino, CA Virtual/ ZOOM Thursdays, : 12-1pm PT on Zoom 🌟 FREE support group: Chronic Conditions - Coffee & Connection🌟--> For people who are managing a long term health issue-->We meet on ZOOM once a month at 12pm PTLike The Show? And so I think there's a lot of shame for people around being traumatized, and trauma in and of itself creates shame, and then people have shame around having shame, and it becomes this terrible feedback loop for people. And if you can believe it, for a few months now I have personally been working with Kristina to make changes around what I’m eating. I’m here to tell you that making these shifts to improve your gut health and overall health has been worth it. For me it was key to have the support and guidance of this wonderful woman, Kristina. She has a knack for meeting you where you are, without judgment, and holding you with delicate compassion and care on your journey with food. Conversation Highlights:What it’s like to work with a functional nutritionist counselor Kristina’s role in helping people break down the barriers so that they can eat well and heal their bodiesInflammation in the body and how the gut often plays a central roleGut health and its impact on health conditions A description of digestion, the role each part plays in the process, and what happens when a part breakdowns or is not functioning optimally Creating a healthy microbiome by eating the greatest variety of food that is high in soluble fiber and doesn't upset your systemThe gut to brain messaging system, and the importance of reconnecting the mind with the body Long term health conditions often take long term healing, and having a support along the way is key Kristina’s 80/20 rule in guiding clients how to think about foodQuote:“We don't talk about it. Why would I be excited about it? Because I have seen healing occur. If you can get the gut working correctly, then you will heal. You will be able to dare I say, go into remission from a lot of conditions. You will calm them down. The distance between flares will extend and the severity of flares will decrease. Her passion is to empower, motivate and educate women so they too can have quality of life despite their symptoms or diagnosis.Takeaways:LJ’s 16 year personal experience of chasing down her own endo diagnosis and being told by her doctors that there aren’t many options available to ease her symptoms.LJ’s realization that conventional medicine wasn’t providing what she and others needed, and retrained in functional medicine and holistic health Endometriosis is uterine-like tissue found outside of the uterus. The endo lesions inflame and the surrounding tissue can inflame as well Endometriosis has stage one, two, three and four and they do not equate to the level of pain, discomfort and inflammation you will have in your body.Symptoms of having endo is different for everyone, with many people having GI and digestion issuesEndo is often difficult to diagnose, and it can often be a process of exclusion to make the diagnosis Lj shares that the best way to confirm if it’s endo is to work with a endometriosis excision surgeon Ablation versus excision surgery to treat endo.Finding and doctor and surgeon you can trust; not just the first person that could get you inLifestyle changes that can support your body to feel better, such as learning your trigger foods that set off inflammation, bloating, loose stool etc. and logging this informationHow functional medicine can help you look for the root cause of the issue you’re having in your bodyQuote:“ I really and honestly turned my pain into my passion. It took me 16 years to be properly diagnosed with endometriosis, yes, 16. So that was 16 years of blaming myself, blaming my doctors, hating my body, hating my doctors, doctors being very dismissive of me, you know, begging, bleeding, literally bleeding out of every orific🌟 Connect with Leslie and Sick and Seeking Community: 🌟Website | YouTube | Facebook | InstagramJoin an Embodied Movement Class or Wild Women's Circle!🔥 CLICK HERE for details 🔥 In-Person: Tuesday, 8:30am PT in South Pasadena, CA Wednesdays, 6:00pm PT in San Marino, CA Virtual/ ZOOM Thursdays, : 12-1pm PT on Zoom 🌟 FREE support group: Chronic Conditions - Coffee & Connection🌟--> For people who are managing a long term health issue-->We meet on ZOOM once a month at 12pm PTLike The Show? Because numbing comes in for different reasons, whether it's we're stuffing something down, or I just can't even anymore. I've gone on overload. It's too much. Lots of different reasons for how numbing can come in… And so through the movement practice, we can start to warm that freeze, or we can start to draw and bring people back into the body.” - Amber RyanTakeaways:Energy can become stagnant in the body and movement can shift the energy into flow and vitalityUsing breathe as a way for people to come into better presence and awareness with themselvesHow Gabrielle Wroth’s 5 Rhythms ecstatic dance method helped Amber re-pattern into healthier ways in support of her body The powerful changes that can happen from a full, deep breath into the bodyThe shift that can happen when participating in embodied movement: feeling freer, awake, connected to life’s goodness, lighter, additional vitality, greater sense of aliveness, rejuvenated, tension and stress release, surrender and letting go How dance gives space for people to be in the raw, real expression of emotion and allows this energy to move Movement can provide a sense of support and community for those experiencing illness or chronic painTears and crying as a healing release that softens us Numbing in the body and how through a movement practice, the body can warm that freeze and draw people back into their bodyConnect with Amber: Website | Instagram | FacebookResources:🌟 Connect with Leslie and Sick and Seeking Community: 🌟Website | YouTube | Facebook | InstagramJoin an Embodied Movement Class or Wild Women's Circle!🔥 CLICK HERE for details 🔥 In-Person: Tuesday, 8:30am PT in South Pasadena, CA Wednesdays, 6:00pm PT in San Marino, CA Virtual/ ZOOM Thursdays, : 12-1pm PT on Zoom 🌟 FREE support group: Chronic Conditions - Coffee & Connection🌟--> For people who are managing a long term health issue-->We meet on ZOOM once a month at 12pm PTLike The Show? Looking forward to connecting with you! --Leslie Sick and Seeking Episode 2 of Season 2 features author and professor Ed Cohen who shares all about his new book: On Learning to Heal - What Medicine Doesn’t Know. At thirteen, Ed Cohen was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease—a chronic, incurable condition that nearly killed him in his early twenties. At his diagnosis, his doctors told him that the best he could hope for would be periods of remission. Unfortunately, doctors never mentioned healing as a possibility. In On Learning to Heal, Cohen draws on fifty years of living with Crohn’s to consider how Western medicine’s turn from an “art of healing” toward a “science of medicine” deeply affects both medical practitioners and their patients. He demonstrates that although medicine can now offer many seemingly miraculous therapies, medicine is not and has never been the only way to enhance healing. Exploring his own path to healing, he argues that learning to heal requires us to desire and value healing as a vital possibility. With this book, Cohen advocates reviving healing’s role for all those whose lives are touched by illness.Topics Discussed:Ed’s Crohn's Disease diagnoses over 50 years ago at the age of 13 His self-proclaimed “adolescence on steroids” when he was treated with high doses of prednisone His life-changing healing trances that spontaneously occurred while severely sick and recovering in hospital Ed’s 40 year quest to understand why medicine knows a lot about being sick, but not a lot about getting better and healingHow healing is our birthright, and in our culture we don’t give healing the respect that it’s due How we are made into an ‘anybody’ for medical purposes when really each disease is particular and specific to each person The idea that medicine is a fee-for-service enterprise, and it sells itself to us as being the best treatment by using diagnosis and prognosisHow medicine was first considered an art of healing, and one way this was practiced was through Asclepion Temple Healin🌟 Connect with Leslie and Sick and Seeking Community: 🌟Website | YouTube | Facebook | InstagramJoin an Embodied Movement Class or Wild Women's Circle!🔥 CLICK HERE for details 🔥 In-Person: Tuesday, 8:30am PT in South Pasadena, CA Wednesdays, 6:00pm PT in San Marino, CA Virtual/ ZOOM Thursdays, : 12-1pm PT on Zoom 🌟 FREE support group: Chronic Conditions - Coffee & Connection🌟--> For people who are managing a long term health issue-->We meet on ZOOM once a month at 12pm PTLike The Show? She was quite the fan favorite (meaning, tons of downloads!) so I had to have her back on to share more of her naturopathic wisdom. This time Debra and I spoke about the the Essential Elements and Nutrients We Need to Function Properly and Create a Healthy Self-Healing and Self-Regulating Environment in Our Bodies and those things are: clean water, good salts, minerals, probiotics, and clean produce.  We speak about:How 80% of your health is lifestyle - not genetics! There are essential elements and nutrients that we need for our body to function properly and for it to create a healthy self-healing and self-regulating environment and that is: clean water, good salts, minerals, probiotics, and clean produce. Water: how much to drink, when to drink it, what type we should be drinking and whySodium Fluoride vs Calcium Fluoride: what’s the difference and why it mattersThe importance of minerals in our diet and the fact that our bodies can manufacture some vitamins, but they cannot manufacture minerals so must get them from your diet or supplements. There are approximately 102 minerals that our bodies need and one of the ways we can get many of them is through Celtic Sea Salt Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Chloride, Iodine: their function in our bodies, and a description of what it might look or feel like if we have a deficiency: Prebiotic, probiotic, and postbiotics and their connection to a healthy gutWhy you should be buying from your local farmer or farmer’s market, and not just because of the environmental footprint Connect with Debra:  Website Resources🌟 Connect with Leslie and Sick and Seeking Community: 🌟Website | YouTube | Facebook | InstagramJoin an Embodied Movement Class or Wild Women's Circle!🔥 CLICK HERE for details 🔥 In-Person: Tuesday, 8:30am PT in South Pasadena, CA Wednesdays, 6:00pm PT in San Marino, CA Virtual/ ZOOM Thursdays, : 12-1pm PT on Zoom 🌟 FREE support group: Chronic Conditions - Coffee & Connection🌟--> For people who are managing a long term health issue-->We meet on ZOOM once a month at 12pm PTLike The Show? Looking forward to connecting with you! --Leslie Hello Sick and Seeing Listeners!I know it’s been  few weeks…I ’ve been humming and hawing over how to close out my first season, and if you don’t know this about me, let me tell you that I’m the queen of over complicating things, hence the delay! I wanted to do this big, storytelling moment where I told you my chronic illness story and what it’s like living in my body. But honestly, it all felt a bit too much. Behind the scenes I’ve been working on completing a couple of certifications (more on that later) so that I can gather women in connection and movement. I’ve decided to keep this episode simple and first do a bit of a reflection on season 1 before I chat about what’s coming next for me and the Sick and Seeking Podcast. Now, one of my mentor’s Sheri Rosenthal often says that heart-based entrepreneurs have a hard time asking their community for things, and I totally identify with this.So as I close Season 1, I do have a few asks:1. Head to my website and sign-up to my newsletter to be alerted when I release a new podcast episode or open Wild Women’s Way Circles, Unstructured Movement Classes, and Transformational Wellness Retreats 2. Looking forward to connecting with you! --Leslie This is my second conversation with somatic therapist, embodiment guide, intuitive body reader, soul coach, and meditation facilitator, Erin Pace.  If you haven’t already listened to episode 12 titled, “The Body is a Realm of Wild Discovery”, I recommend you go back after this episode and take a listen.Embodied, sensual movement is a deep passion of mine as I know first-hand, in my body, mind and soul, how supportive and healing it can be. I’m thrilled to have had these conversations with Erin in order to spread awareness about the positive impact this type of movement can provide, especially for women who are lacking trust and connection to their bodies. We speak about:Honoring the depth of emotion women hold in their bodies, and  embracing the experience of emotion in the body Feeling emotions requires a commitment to connection to yourself and embracing what is happening within youEmotion is held in the body until we escort it away How we desensitize as a way of survival and how our sensitivity in our bodies is a genius Honoring, forgiving and allowing our bodies when they ask for restHow inviting ease can make space for more energy in the bodyBeing with the intelligence of the body and what may show up when you check-in and visit The remembrance of connecting with the divine and the sacredness of all  When women awaken to aliveness and wholeness in their bodies, there may be another quest inside of them to connect that to their eroticism Women’s inability to receive Using Erin’s A.L.I.V.E acronym as a daily touchstone or affirmation practice, starting with the phrases “I am” or “Am I?” – Aware, Listening, Intentional (or Inspired), Valid, Evolving Quotes:“Emotion can feel like a scary foe, and I invite that is should be a sacred informer” - Erin PaceConnect with Erin: Website | 🌟 Connect with Leslie and Sick and Seeking Community: 🌟Website | YouTube | Facebook | InstagramJoin an Embodied Movement Class or Wild Women's Circle!🔥 CLICK HERE for details 🔥 In-Person: Tuesday, 8:30am PT in South Pasadena, CA Wednesdays, 6:00pm PT in San Marino, CA Virtual/ ZOOM Thursdays, : 12-1pm PT on Zoom 🌟 FREE support group: Chronic Conditions - Coffee & Connection🌟--> For people who are managing a long term health issue-->We meet on ZOOM once a month at 12pm PTLike The Show? Debra is a Traditional Naturopath, Certified Natural Health Practitioner, a Hanna Kroeger Practitioner, Lifestyle Coach and a NuVision Biofeedback Specialist. A teacher at heart, Debra thrives on educating and coaching people to make better choices for themselves. In this episode she highlights some of the over 500 chemicals we are exposed to daily, where they are found, and what symptoms may occur after exposure. This is just the first introduction to Debra and her knowledge, and there is much more ground to cover. More conversations with Debra will be coming soon on the Sick and Seeking Youtube Page. We speak about:Why people seek out the support of a naturopath like DebraOne of the causes for chronic illness relapse in our bodies is due to the environmental toxins lurking in the over 500 chemicals we are exposed to dailyCommercial scents and air fresheners are not regulated and there can be unlisted ingredients in these products Selecting high-quality essential oils that are labeled therapeutic-grade The different organs in our bodies and what they do to help the body rid of toxic substancesEnvironmental chemicals and toxins and how they may negatively affect you body Awareness and avoidance of formaldehyde, aluminum, sodium fluoride, parabens, sulfates, nitrites, nitrates, MSG and aspartame in products or foods that go on, in, or near your bodyThe important difference between calcium fluoride versus sodium fluoride, and why this distinction is important. How to limit one’s exposure to dioxin, also known as glyphosateChewing gums and mints are now sweetened with aspartame instead of sugar and why this is potentially an issue Debra’s suggestion to avoid harsh detoxes for the body and start with dandelion, parsley or cilantro teasTimestamps:1:30: What is a naturopath?9:50: Common symptoms of toxic exposure 18:00: Che🌟 Connect with Leslie and Sick and Seeking Community: 🌟Website | YouTube | Facebook | InstagramJoin an Embodied Movement Class or Wild Women's Circle!🔥 CLICK HERE for details 🔥 In-Person: Tuesday, 8:30am PT in South Pasadena, CA Wednesdays, 6:00pm PT in San Marino, CA Virtual/ ZOOM Thursdays, : 12-1pm PT on Zoom 🌟 FREE support group: Chronic Conditions - Coffee & Connection🌟--> For people who are managing a long term health issue-->We meet on ZOOM once a month at 12pm PTLike The Show?
