Our Editor's Take

Ghost Town: Strange History, True Crime, & the Paranormal is a true crime and paranormal podcast. Comedians Rebecca Leib and Jason Horton write, produce, and host. But the stories they tell in each episode are more eerie than funny. They often involve unsolved murders, like that of Hollywood heiress Georgette Bauerdorf. This is not someone most listeners are likely to be familiar with. The stories on the podcast are ones fans of this genre may have yet to hear.

For example, many listeners may know the Nike sneaker brand's "Just Do It" tagline. But fewer likely know the tagline's violent origins. As Jason says, it's "a killer slogan." The hosts introduce themselves and the podcast, and Rebecca starts telling the story. Her speech is quick and has little inflection. The story does not need theatrics or embellishment. The story begins in 1988 in the boardroom of an ad agency in Portland, Oregon. It's getting late, and everyone is feeling anxious.

Another episode of the podcast tells the tale of Cordelia Botkin. She was a charming murderess who made a mockery of the criminal legal system. Botkin got a life sentence but continued to live the good life. She was able to take frequent field trips into town. Guards were happy to escort her. Not every story on Ghost Town: Strange History, True Crime, & the Paranormal is so glamorous.

Dr. Margaret Kilcoyne was a brilliant cardiologist doing meaningful work. She vanished in 1980, and no one knows what happened to her. Some have suspected that her brother had something to do with it. He didn't appear upset after his sister's disappearance. He seemed very insistent that she had depression and was suicidal. This seems unlikely, given how promising her career was at this point. People have different theories about what may have happened.

Ghost Town: Strange History, True Crime, & the Paranormal's stories are compelling. While they are sometimes upsetting, they are always fascinating. The storytelling is concise with thorough research. People who enjoy true crime and paranormal podcasts may appreciate the short, punchy episodes.
