Our Editor's Take

There's no denying that trivia quizzes are fun. Unless, of course, the questions are too difficult, or too esoteric, to appeal to a wide audience. Trivia for Kids is a show made for older elementary students ages nine and up. Listeners can think of it as a game show in podcast form. The show is like Jeopardy! but for children.

Every episode of Trivia for Kids follows a common structure. There are five rounds, each with its own category, and seven questions in each round. The categories can be almost anything. Animals of all sorts are popular. Pop culture phenomena like Harry Potter, Disney princesses, and video games are prominent. Broader categories include science, geography, snacks, and US states. Some questions focus on world history, superheroes, fairy tales, and toys.

In each round of the trivia podcast, host Kacie Clousing reads all seven questions. Then her daughter, Renn, tries to answer each one. The last round is the final exam. Kacie repeats the episode's seven hardest questions to check if Renn remembers the answer.

Even though it's called Trivia for Kids, that doesn't mean that grownups can't play. With categories like rainbows, unusual animals, and Encanto, kids have as much of a chance as adults to be experts. Not only that, but listeners submit many of the questions. What is the only type of bird that can fly backward? What musical instrument do Scottish Highlanders dance to? Who helped launch the Civil Rights movement in the US by refusing to sit at the back of a bus?

Trivia for Kids is not just a game, though. It's also a great learning tool. Kacie understands this. Every answer comes with a little bit of background information. Listeners learn the details of the great Canadian maple syrup heist. In 2011 and 2012, thieves stole $18 million worth of maple syrup from Quebec. They discover that Tanuki Mario's suit gets its name from the Japanese raccoon dog.

Trivia for Kids is a great choice for listeners who love a challenge. At about 35 minutes, episodes keep kids engaged and learning, not overwhelmed.
