Coffee Break Gaelic - learn Scottish Gaelic on your Coffee Break

Coffee Break Languages

Learn Scottish Gaelic with teacher Susanna and her student Mark. Each lesson is like going for a coffee with your friend who happens to speak Scottish Gaelic and is helping you learn in a relaxed, enjoyable way.

Coffee Break Gaelic is not a simple series of "listen and repeat" audio programmes: in each lesson Susanna explains how the language works, helping Mark - and you - to manipulate the language and use it in practical situations. As a learner Mark asks questions, and makes mistakes, so through Susanna's explanations, corrections and pronunciation tips you'll build your confidence and begin to understand and speak the language.

In the same time it takes you to sit down and enjoy a coffee in your favourite coffee shop, you can make progress with your Gaelic. Our 15-20 minute lessons are perfect to keep you focused and let you develop your confidence in regular sessions.

Less than 60 thousand people speak Scottish Gaelic. Most of them live in the northwest of Scotland. The language is experiencing a renaissance. Scottish people are learning Gaelic to preserve their identity and celebrate their culture. It's a beautiful and ancient language that deserves recognition. The podcast is here to give it.

Susanna and Mark start with greetings in Gaelic. When seeing someone, podcast listeners learn to say "Halò" and "Ciamar a tha thu?" Mark asks for frequent repetitions. He also has Susanna say the phrase word by word. In this way, learners can follow along and repeat the phrases as often as needed.

From there, Mark and Susanna practice what to say in many everyday situations. Mark learns to introduce himself and talk about where he's from and his likes and dislikes. He discovers how to ask questions of others. Essential concepts like numbers, family members, and the weather are covered on the podcast. From there, the lessons get a little bit more complex. Susanna teaches Mark the words to find his way in town. Those lessons include the names of shops as well as directional vocabulary. Mark also discovers how to order drinks at a pub.

In each podcast episode, Rae comes in with valuable cultural tips. She explains when to address someone in a formal way and when informal speech is okay. She also helps listeners avoid accidental rudeness.
