Our Editor's Take

The Foretold podcast explores the Romani-American culture. This series does so through one woman who chose to escape it. The host is Los Angeles Times reporter Faith E. Pinho, and the woman in question is Paulina Stevens. Those unfamiliar with Paulina's culture may know it better by the g-word, the slur "gypsy." Paulina reveals that some people don't believe it is even an authentic culture.

Paulina's story opens up an intriguing exploration of this hidden community. Southern California is home to one of the largest populations of Romani people in the US. Foretold describes the vast number of psychic shops as one key indicator of their existence. Although it's standard for people to seek them out for tarot card readings, the rest of their lives are secret. This community is close-knit with its own rules and laws. They want to keep the outside world out to preserve their identity.

According to the Foretold podcast, Paulina's future was, well, foretold. The Romani community had already determined her future. She would leave school at 12 to start her career as a fortune teller in Orange County. Following an arranged marriage, her future children would then follow the same path. Although this is the path for many people like Paulina, she decided it wasn't the one for her. One night she decided to leave with her children and turned to Faith for help.

Through weekly podcast episodes, Faith unravels Paulina's story. At first, she admits to thinking it would be news of scams by psychics, as are often reported. Yet it wasn't long before Faith realizes this is a story worth exploring. As her guest starts to tell her story, Paulina reveals details of manipulation, child labor, and the risk of losing her children.

Foretold tells the story of a young mother who risks it all to escape her community. Faith explores her history in each episode, explaining her decision to leave. It's an insightful view of a hidden community and how it kept one woman from experiencing the world outside. The limited-episode series is a compelling listen.
