Matty Staudt: Podcasting, Podle.co and the Podcast Academy
Matty Staudt is the owner of Jam Street Media, a board member of the Podcast Academy, about to launch Podle.co and .... looking for his next opportunity. All at once.In this episode, we are going to talk about podcasting growth and opportunities with industry experts, the pros and cons of remote work in the podcast industry, and his experience of starting a network, despite initial reservations, and the importance of cross-promotion within the network. As two radio veterans, we expressed our frustration with working alone in the podcast industry, desiring more human interaction and creative collaboration, the challenges of building a podcast network in today's industry, including the need for dedicated sales and content that resonates with listeners. And naturally, Matty expressed concern about the lack of monetization in podcasting, particularly in comparison to video content, and the potential for low-quality ads to harm the industry. He pulls no punches and that it why we love having him on the show.A transcript of this episode is available here.We also discussed his upcoming business venture called Podle.co which pairs creators and producers. Matt Cundill Voiceovers might just get involved with this. As well the value of the Podcast Academy and our uncertainty around celebrity podcasts, with many failing to gain traction or provide valuable content. Thanks to our supporters!Nlogic - TV & Radio Audience Data SolutionsMary Anne Ivison at Ivison Voice. - Make her the female voice of your radio station.Matt Fogarty Voiceovers - It's great to have Matt back for 2024 supporting our show. Make him the imaging voice for your radio station by contacting him through his website.Megatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.Things to know! Craig Baird: Canadian History Ehx

Craig Baird: Canadian History Ehx
Fellow Canadian history buffs, rejoice: Craig Baird has a cool podcast and radio show.Actually, that call to action may not resonate with very many of you, but that's exactly why Craig Baird started his podcast. Canadian History Ehx is a show dedicated to proving that Canadian history isn't nearly as boring as everyone thinks. Sure, it may not be as long and storied as European or Asian history. Sure, it doesn't have the plethora of bloody battles that American history provides. But you're doing your country and yourself a disservice if you think that means there aren't tons of great stories in the Canadian history books.Unfortunately though, as Craig and I discuss, you may have to do a bit of digging to find them on your own. Which is what makes Craig's podcast so great: he does the digging for you. All you have to do is listen.Craig talks to me about the most interesting parts of Canadian history, including tales of little-known Indigenous battles and would-be revolutionaries, from the country's inception to present day. We also explore the failings of the Canadian education system in terms of actually teaching our history, as evidenced by Craig and I being taught completely different things about figures like Louis Riel. Depending on which province you grew up in, there's a lot of important details you might have missed, but thankfully Craig is here to fill in the gaps.A video of this episode is here. I mentioned that you should take a Canadian Citizenship test online to determine how little you know about Canadian History - embarrass yourself here. If you want to hear more, check out Canadian History Ehx on Craig's website, or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also follow Craig on Facebook, Twitter/X and Instagram. Maie Pauts: Low Maintenance Maie
Feb 20 2024
Maie Pauts: Low Maintenance Maie
Last June, I got to watch Maie Pauts receive the Rosalie Tromblay Trailblazer Award. There was a 10 minute video summary of her career along with the tributes and highlights. This is a longer version of that.In this episode, you'll hear how Maie got her start in radio at the campus station at Ryerson University in Toronto. She originally wanted to work in TV production but fell in love with radio after joining the campus station. She hosted a funk/R&B show at the campus station before getting her first radio job at an AM station in Brampton. She later joined the legendary CFNY station in Toronto where she worked from 1986-2001. In the 90s, CFNY went through an ownership change and started playing more commercial hits, which upset some core listeners. But it also led to increased ratings. After leaving CFNY, Maie did a short stint in talk radio before joining CHUM FM's in 2002. She later moved to Boom 97.3 in 2010, playing hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s.What's the key to Boom's success? Talking about current events while playing older music. This allows the brand and personalities to connect with listeners of all ages. Finally, Maie received the Rosalie Trombley Trailblazer Award from Radio Trailblazers Canada for her contributions to radio over a 40+ year career. If you would like to nominate someone for that award this year, please nominate them now. Thanks to the our supporters!Nlogic - TV & Radio Audience Data SolutionsMary Anne Ivison at Ivison Voice. Steve Goldstein: The New Rules of Podcasting

Steve Goldstein: The New Rules of Podcasting
Steve Goldstein is back after a nearly three year absence from the show to talk about video and podcasting. Last summer - video was the main topic of conversation at Podcast Movement, largely on the heels of a presentation by Steve Goldstein from Amplifi Media and Jay Nachlis from Coleman Insights. The study surveyed podcast listeners on how they "consume" podcasts across platforms like YouTube, Spotify, Apple etc. Key findings were that 72% use multiple apps to listen, and 75% said a podcast can be audio or video. Steve and I also discussed how people are consuming podcasts in different ways - watching full videos, clips, highlights etc. Podcasters need to make content available in multiple formats to reach wider audiences. How? Well that's still something each individual podcaster needs to figure out.The Sound Off Podcast started recording a video version of our episodes shortly after this study was released. We are interested to know what you think. In the spirit of the study and this episode - we released this episode a few days early on YouTube, and spent a little more time than we would producing a video product. Thanks to our supporters! Josie Dye: What Radio Needs Now
Feb 6 2024
Josie Dye: What Radio Needs Now
Josie Dye is exactly what radio needs. You may recognize her name from a few places: If you're in Toronto, you'll likely have heard her on Indie 88 for the last few years, or on 102.1 The Edge back in the day. You might have also heard Cynthia & Josie's Unmentionables, her podcast with Cynthia Loyst, which has been blowing up since it launched in 2022. Or, if you're a long-time fan of the Sound Off Podcast, you may remember her as the very last guest we had on before the pandemic hit.Either way, things have certainly changed for Josie since then. Besides the rapidly-growing podcast, she's also moved from Indie 88 to possibly the most well-known call letters in Canada, 104.5 CHUM FM. In this episode, Josie tells us why she made the move, as well as sharing the (mostly) wonderful experiences she's had at all the various stations she's worked in. We also spend lots of time talking about the podcast, which, in only a few months, achieved numbers that took this show years to reach. Oh, and which she didn't even want to do at first. If you're in Toronto, you can hear The Josie Dye Show on 104.5 CHUM FM, weekdays from 3-6pm EST. If you're not in Toronto, you can listen live online here at the same time.A transcription of the show can be found here. A video version of the recording is on our YouTube Page.Check out Cynthia & Josie's Unmentionables on their website, or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also connect with Josie on Facebook, Twitter/X, and Instagram. Thanks to the our supporters! Carly Kincaid: Radio Junkie

Carly Kincaid: Radio Junkie
Carly Kincaid may use the term "Radio Junkie" to describe herself, but she's also a voiceover pro you hear on corporate narrations and when you are put on hold. Her radio career kicked of in the late 90's and since then she has rarely veered away from a microphone. In this episode, you will hear about Carly's passion for radio and voiceover work, revealing it's "in her blood." She talks about how her favourite radio host growing up was Rick Sadler, and they saw him in a restaurant without realizing it was him until after the fact, and despite her parents' disapproval, and she eventually went back to school to pursue a degree in broadcasting. You'll also hear about working with Steve Jones, what life was like with the radio station positioned inside the world's second largest shopping mall, and how she built her own recording studio from scratch. We might have touched on AI as well and what it means for radio and voiceover talent. Also we added the Sound Off Podcast to the The Open Podcast Prefix Project (OP3) A free and open-source podcast prefix analytics service committed to open data and listener privacy. Erin Davis: Very Very Grateful

Erin Davis: Very Very Grateful
Today, we cross a name off every radio aficionado's interview bucket list: Erin Davis. Erin hosted radio in Toronto for more than 30 years, from the 80's all the way to 2016. Most of that time was spent at the venerable CHFI.There's a lot to talk about when it comes to Erin's career, and she's happy to share. Stories of personal and career growth, and how she developed her hosting skills. The mistakes she made along the way. The co-hosts she had the best and worst chemistry with, what she found so special about radio, the decline she's seen since the turn of the century, and of course, the devastating change that prompted her to leave radio behind.Since 2016, Erin has expanded her resume in a number of ways. Most notable, though, are her book Mourning Has Broken, and her two podcasts- Drift with Erin Davis and the G and F Podcast. G and F is co-hosted by Erin and her longtime friend and fellow voice talent, Lisa Brandt. Drift, on the other hand, is a show meant to help you drift off peacefully to sleep. To get in touch with Erin, learn more about her, or read her weekly blog posts, check out her website here.We also spoke extensively about Valerie Geller's book Beyond Powerful Radio which you can find here. in paper format and on Audible. Andrew "Hustler" Paterson: Winnipeg Sports Talk FTW
Andrew "Hustler" Paterson is the owner of Winnipeg Sports Talk. TSN 1290 abandoned the Sports Radio format back in February 2021, and since then, he and his producer Michael Remis have filled the gap, putting out high-quality daily sports content for the people of Winnipeg to enjoy.Hustler started in radio with a Saturday sports show on CFEQ 107.1 the Freak, and proceeded to build his brand through stints at the Winnipeg Free Press and CJOB. Phil Becker: PHIL-Osophy
Do you remember last Spring, when the media was all abuzz about AI Ashley, the first-ever artificial intelligence radio DJ? If so, you might remember the name Alpha Media. They're the ones who help bring her to life. (AI Ashley is Ashley “Z” Elzinga)Phil Becker is the Executive Vice President of Content at Alpha Media, and our guest today. He has a hand in the programming and content efforts of over 200 radio stations across America, and quite honestly, he's been on my list of potential podcast guests for years. Even before AI Ashley, his speaking points at conferences always fascinated me, as did his path through the radio industry. In this episode, Phil and I chat about his unorthodox career path, the unique decisions that led him to it, and of course, the future and AI's prospective role in it. When AI Ashley was released last year, myself and many others speculated about what it could mean for the future of radio. We're still waiting to see how that turns out in the long run, but for now, Phil provides some excellent ideas of what we might be able to expect. If you're curious about what Alpha Media is up to now, or want to work with them, you can visit their website here.A transcription of this episode can be found here. Thanks to the following organizations for supporting the show:Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.Megatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Matt & Jake: DriveTime! (We Used to be Cool!)

Matt & Jake: DriveTime! (We Used to be Cool!)
It's Halloween and way back in the 90's the station I used to work for had this thing called the Howler. It was an out of control good time featuring 5000 people and a band and some beer. Actually a lot of beer. This week I got back together with my old afternoon friend Jake Daniels and we just riffed on all the good times we used to have on air. Our show was always a contrast to the noise going on around us. We didn't need too much else in a show other than admitting we were coming in with nothing and would finish the show with a joke. It's a good day to do radio if you are interested in life.In this episode you will hear Jake's infamous story with Nazareth, how we enjoyed watching Nickelback's ascension into stardom, Woodstock '99 (Jake was there), How Jake still hates country music and Metallica, hates soccer but loves Wrexham, and he shares medical advice and the benefits of going vegan. (Jake is a fan of Rick Simpson's Oil... you can google the rest)Anyhow - we have only spoken a handful of times in the last 20 years but as it is with old friends - you pick up where you left off. There is a video version of the show here - this was recorded live to video.Back in 2018, I had Jake on the show for an epic - Episode 100. Check it out here. Jake also mention he is looking for radio and broadcast work in Edmonton. You can contact him here.
