In a recent unit, combining Spanish and Sociales, students collaborated and learned from local farmers at Granitos de Paz.  This reciprocal partnership involved students learning about what foods are growing locally in their community from the farmers and creating a system for members of their community to purchase directly from the local farmers, rather than buying imported foods with a higher carbon footprint. Other experts from the community also visited the class as guest speakers. This service learning project is a great example of how students can work collaboratively with a community partner to both learn from that community partner, and make meaningful contributions to their work.

He was the keynote speaker at the NESA Leadership Conference held in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This is a space usually reserved for the Who’s Who of educational consultants and school leaders in the international school community. This time though, they selected a student and any who were in attendance would tell you they made the right choice. Said grew up attending international schools in Cairo and Beirut and is currently in his first year as an undergraduate at Harvard University. You might’ve heard of it. In our conversation, Said talks about how it was his community involvement, not academics, that led him to where he is today and really shaped his life so far. Join me as we look at how passion and drive for change can be transformed into sustainable  policies that improve our communities, and how involving students is such an important part of shaping our desired future.

You might be interested in hiring them to lead your next corporate retreat. Participating in a program co-designed by Inspire Citizens along with the student-leaders themselves, they created a portrait of a leader that included skills and dispositions like empathy, critical thinking, active listening, interpersonal skills, and more. They then went through a series of workshops led by Inspire Citizens to bring this portrait to life within themselves. From there they took what they learned and applied it to their leadership roles in clubs and councils across the school. Most recently, with the support of a dedicated group of teachers at ISB, they led their own leadership workshops to build capacity within the school and empower the next student-leaders who will succeed them when they graduate. Caity and the Toilet Twinning Group (TTC) at Frankfurt International School recently received the 11th Toilet Twinning certificate for FIS and it is twinned with a toilet in South Sudan. In South Sudan, only 10% of the population has access to safely managed sanitation, according to WHO and UNICEF. Drinking dirty and contaminated water leads to water borne diseases such as cholera and other diarrheal diseases, a leading cause of death among children in the country. South Sudanese women and girls face the hardest challenge with enrolment, retention, and education completion remain low.Caity, along with members of the TTC, ran a glitter tattoo stand at the recent Applefest. This created so much awareness about building toilets that Caity has come home with even higher numbers of bottles (another way the group fundraises). This means TTG@FIS will be able to twin more toilets for International Toilet Day on November 19th to make a difference in the lives of women, girls and communities.
